Brackley Town F.C 3-1 Workington A.F.C - Match Highlights
Conference (North) 2012/2013 Season.
Report (Workington): Reds were battered into submission by the runaway Conference North leaders yet, for an hour, matched the Northamptonshire side in this first ever meeting.
They were marginally the better side in the first half, despite reaching the break a goal in arrears, but were second best after the interval and might have suffered a heavier loss had it not been for Aaran Taylor who, worryingly, is becoming Reds' star performer this season.
He pulled off a string of fine saves to keep his side in contention but hasn't had the satisfaction of a clean sheet this term with goals being conceded at a ratio of over two per game.
Two lengthy injury stoppages lead to a protracted first half with substitutes required for Town front man, Gary Mulligan, following an accidental collision with David Hewson and assistant referee John Steel who sustained a thigh strain. A public address system request resulted in two volunteers offering their services with the referee handing the flag to Brackley's senior steward, Stephen Toghill, who ran the line for over an hour.
Taylor made the first of his many saves early in the game thwarting Elliot Sandy from close range but it was his opposite number, thirty nine year old Billy Turley, who drew applause after diving full length to keep out a goal bound Gareth Arnison shot.
An earlier four man flowing move culminated in Jordan Connerton narrowly missing the target with an acrobatic volley while Gari Rowntree was well off target via a direct free kick.
But, as half time approached, Reds fell for the sucker punch with a lapse in concentration their downfall. James Clifton was given time on the ball and the full back took advantage by having a shot at goal. Taylor appeared to have the shot covered until a deflection off Kyle May took the ball away from his waiting arms and into the net.
Reds didn't deserve to be a goal down and within six minutes of the restart had restored parity. Will Vaulks floated a free kick towards the far post, Connerton's header sent the ball back into the danger area and Jonny Wright got the final touch for close range equaliser. Wright had squandered a simple chance two minutes earlier when Arnison and Connerton combined to set up the opportunity but Turley reacted quicker to block a weak shot.
Town's discipline became a little suspect momentarily with Brett Solkhon, Turley and Josh Green all booked within minutes for dissent.
But they regained their composure and were the dominant force for the final half hour.
Steve Diggin headed one effort over the bar then Taylor made three excellent saves in quick succession foiling Curtis McDonald, Sandy and Solkhon.
Brackley were applying almost relentless pressure on Taylor and his flagging defenders and a second goal seemed inevitable. It arrived after seventy seven minutes when Sandy scrambled the ball home from three yards after Reds had repeatedly failed to clear their lines.
With seven minutes to go, Reds mounted a rare attack which could have produced a hardly deserved leveller. Vaulks released Wright down the inside left channel and the latter's ball to the far post found Josh Todd but he made a hash of his shot and the opportunity was lost.
To rub salt into Reds' wounds, Town got a deserved third seconds before the final whistle. Substitute Tommy Winters' intelligent pull back at the far post fell right into Glenn Walker's path and he guided the ball past the helpless Taylor to secure an eighth consecutive win maintaining the only 100% record in the Conference.
