The National Museum of Sudan is a double storied building constructed in 1955 and established as a museum in 1971. The building and its surrounding gardens house the largest and most comprehensive Nubian archaeological collection in the world including objects from the Paleolithic through to the Islamic period originating from every site of importance in the Sudan.
In particular it houses collections of these periods of the History of Sudan: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Kerma Culture, Kingdom of Egypt and medieval Makuria.
The museum is located on the El Neel (Nile) Avenue in Khartoum in Al-Mugran area near the spot where the White and the Blue Niles meet.
The National Museum holds many treasures of Sudan’s ancient and medieval past. They’re well presented and labelled, and give a good narrative of Sudanese history. Spread out over two floors, the ground floor starts with Sudan’s prehistory and covers the rise of Kerma and Kush in great detail. Kerma is particularly well represented through its famous pottery. The Kushite displays show the wide variety of cultural exchange in play throughout the kingdom. Egyptian culture is the strongest influence, shown particularly in the royal statues found at Jebel Barkal dating from around 690BC and the sarcophagus of Anlamani from his tomb at Nuri about 100 years earlier. A clear Hellenistic influence can be seen in the statue of the so-called ‘Venus of Meroë’ and a blue-glass chalice from Sedeinga, with depictions of gods and bearing a Greek inscription ‘You shall live’. A side room on the ground floor has space for temporary displays, often illustrating current archaeological digs.
The upstairs gallery holds the museum’s most unexpected displays – frescoes from Christian Nubia. Despite lasting for 700 years, Sudan’s early Christian kingdoms are little known to the outside world and repeated Sudanese governments have shown little interest in promoting this aspect of their history. I was as ignorant as most on my first visit, and was astounded to find beautiful frescoes depicting Christ and the Virgin Mary, along with a host of archangels, saints and apostles. The style of the frescoes is distinctly Byzantine, reflecting Nubia’s links with the Roman Empire in the east. Most were painted between the 8th and 14th centuries, and were taken from the cathedral at Faras, now submerged under Lake Nasser. The upstairs galleries can be a little dark, so you may want to take a torch with you in order to see the details in the frescoes.

Spontaneously went out with my brother's former colleagues and made local friends. Got invited to the National Museum in Khartoum with a tour guide who explained so much history about Sudan. The Museum was opened for the first time in 1971 and some templos in it was rescued from sinking while in the area damaged after the establishment of Al Ali Damn in Egypt.

Auf Anregung des sudanesischen Botschafters S. E. Badreldin Abdalla wurden Ende Juli 2017 im Ägyptischen Museum München in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Naga-Team mehrere Videoclips zur Archäologie im Sudan aufgenommen. Sie sind von der Botschaft und der sudanesischen Altertümerverwaltung über verschiedene Social Media und in einer sechsteiligen Fernsehserie im Sudan verbreitet worden und haben sehr große Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Präsident Omar El Bashir nahm die Videos zum Anlass eines Besuchs im National Museum Khartum, wo er eine verstärkte Unterstützung der Archäologie im Sudan in Aussicht stellte.
So können wir einen Beitrag zur Weckung und Förderung der historischen und kulturellen Identität des Sudan leisten und eine wichtige Aufgabe erfüllen, die wir uns neben den wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen für unsere die Arbeit im Sudan vorgenommen haben.

Definitely speaking about pottery-making in Sudan is speaking about the Sudanese civilisation, as it was well known for having archaeological artefacts made from pottery during different historical periods. And it was very high quality that it was even well known worldwide as the Sudanese pottery for many reasons such as the nature of the Sudanese ground, the Sudanese climate and the availability of the substances that make pottery clay. For instance, the white mud and the red mud or any other colour that is used in pottery already existed in Sudan and until today Sudan stands for all tools needed to create pottery.

In fact, we should be proud that we have a culture that is reflected by artwork and these artworks should be used commercially or at least there should be a museum for contemporary Sudanese pottery. For instance, one of the countries that does not have a museum is Sudan. Specifically, there is no museum for contemporary art that includes colouring or others. However, pottery-making resembles a very high degree of humanitarian and cultural awareness, and I hope that there is more interest in this art by the country, God willing.

One of Sudan's oldest crafts is at risk of dying out, local business owners warn.
Sudanese pottery-making was once renowned around the world, but with fewer younger people learning the craft, the trade might soon be extinct.
STORYLINE:
In Sudan's largest city, Omdurman, these men are preserving a dying art.
Omdurman's pottery factories are well known for their high quality pottery products.
But this ancient profession is at risk of dying out as young Sudanese people are not learning the craft, warns the owner of this factory.
Pottery making has been abandoned because a lot of people now are not learning how to craft pottery. We are worried that after a long time, such as twenty to sixty years, there might not be pottery-making in Sudan anymore, says pottery factory owner, Ali Desouky.
Potters in Desouky's factory use pottery wheels to make flower pots, pitchers and other clay products the old-fashioned way.
One of the oldest traditions in Sudan, pottery making has flourished in the country for a number of reasons, says local artist Dr. Rashid Diab.
