Sudhagad Trek | सुधागड | Raigad | Sahyadri | Forts in Maharashtra | Mansoon Trek | Jungle Trek
Note : In the caption at [1:11] there is a typo where the year is mentioned as 1948 instead of 1648.
#sudhagad #trek #mansoontrek
Sudhagad is a hill fort located near Pali in Raigad district, Maharashtra. B.C. Second-century caves Thanale and Khadsamble can be seen near Sudhagad, so the fort might be equally ancient. The fort stands on the Sawashani cha Ghat route, descending from Tailbaila to Konkan.
The fort was formerly known as Bhorpgad. After conquering this fort in 1648, Shivaji Maharaj named it as Sudhagad.
Recently, the area of Sudhagad has been declared as a sanctuary. The name of Pali Sudhagad taluka of Raigad district is given from this fort. Its height is 2030 feet above sea level and this fort has a very large plateau.
There are 3 routes to the fort. One way comes from the village Dhondse. On this route one can see 2 water tanks and a Mahadarwaja. It takes 3 hours to reach the fort from Dhondse village.
Another route comes from Thakurwadi near Pachhapur village. 2 ladders are installed on this route. This route is easy. It takes 2 hours to reach the fort via this route.
After about an hour from Thakurwadi we reached at Pacchapur Darwaja.
The Pacchapur darwaja structure no longer exists. One route from Pachhapur village comes near the Pachhapur entrance.
Here we can see two large bastions. There is gallery like section in bastions. There are steps to get down there.
There are many lakes and rock cut water tanks on the fort. Many of the structures on the fort are still in good condition.
Sudhgad was the glory of Bhor Sansthan. Because of its vast expansion, Sudhagad was considered as the capital fort by Shivaji Maharaj. Later, Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb's son Akbar met in Pachhapur.
Reaching on the platue from Pachhapur entrance, a large lake is seen on the left. Moving on, we reach 'Pant Sachiv Wada'. Here 40-50 people can stay comfortably. Also, in the temple of Bhorai Devi, 20-25 people can be accommodated.
Behind wada, there is a temple of Bhoreshwar. Continuing on, the left path leads to the Escape route and straight path leads to the plateau of the Bhorai devi temple. On the left to the temple of Bhorai Devi, one can see lake and some structures of storerooms.
The road from Dhondse village comes up near the temple of Bhorai Devi. After descending this route for 15 minutes, we reach at Mahadarwaja. This entrance is built in 'Gomukhi' structure. This gate is a replica of the mahadarwaja of Raigad.
The fort is surrounded by Tailbaila, Ghangad and Sarsgad. Walking from the storeroom structures, we reach the Takmak tok.
One can reach Mumbai to Sudhagad via Khalapur Pali. This distance is 115 km. The distance from Pune to Sudhagad via Lonavla Khopoli Pali is 130 km. Pachhapur - Thakurwadi is about 12 km from Pali on the Pali Bhira route. From Pune - Tamhini Ghat via Bhira, Thakurwadi (base village Sudhagad) is 115 kms.

Mrugagad Fort (मृगगड) | Lonavala | Maharashtra, India
Mrugagad
Follow On Instagram——

About Sudhagad:
Sudhagad, also known as Bhorapgad, is a small hill fort near Pali, Maharashtra. The fort was named Bhorapgad after the Goddess Bhoraidevi. The origin of the fort traces back to 2nd century BC. It was named Sudhagad after the Marathas conquered it from the Bhamani dynasty in 1657. Shivaji Maharaj considered it to be the capital of the Maratha empire but later decided to choose Raigad over Sudhagad due to its central location.
Sudhagad trek is a short and sweet weekend gateway for trekkers from Mumbai and Pune. The fort is almost equidistant from both the cities. One can see the peaks of Sarasgad, Tail Baila and Ghangad from the top. There are 2 huge lakes at the top where one can take a dip and build a camp for night stay. Apart from that, you can also visit Bhorai devi temple and “Pant Sachivancha Vada”.
Car road ends once you reach Thakurwadi. To your right you can see a school. There is a parking space next to it. The trail begins just opposite to the school. Ask any local and they will guide you.
After crossing few houses, the trail begins ascending slightly. You are now facing Sudhagad while Thakurwadi lies behind you. From here you can see the first ladder as well. The route is well laid and there is negligible chance to lose track.
Traversing further, the route now moves through some dense overgrowth till you reach the first ladder. The ladder appears to be new and strong. After climbing the first ladder, the trail passes through open meadows with light ascent. About 15 minutes of walk will take you to the next ladder.
Once you climb the ladder, you will reach stone steps which will lead you through Pacchapur darwaja. The steps are easy to climb but consume good amount of energy. The last 15 minutes of the climb is again through open meadows and lead you upto Takmak point.
The trail now opens up to huge flat land. There is a potable fresh water pond at the top. This place is ideal to set up a camp if you do not wish to stay at the Vada (near the Bhorai Devi temple ahead).
Keeping the lake to your left, move straight ahead following the arrow marks and you will come across rajwada. There are rooms available here and the temple care taker Mr. Santosh offers food and stay. The rajwada has a wooden pillared gallery surrounded by a central courtyard.
Take some steps further and you land on a stone bordered walkway which leads to the Bhorai devi temple. Bhorai devi was the family deity of the Pant Sachivas. There is a huge deep stambh or a lamp tower in the temple courtyard. Also, one can see several hero stones carved to pay tribute to the death of a hero in a battle.
The rajwada and temple are in a pretty good shape. The views of surrounding mountains are eye pleasing and keep us reminding how insignificant we humans are in front of a mountain.
You can descend back on the same route or explore an alternate route from Dhondase village which joins the top near the devi temple. This trail is through the Mahadarwaja, located diametrically opposite to Pacchapur Darwaja in the North. You can hire a vehicle back to Pali village from Dhondase. The descent will take you around 2 hours. There are also diversions on the Dhondase route to take you to other trails such as Talibala, Ghanghad and Kairgad. If you camp overnight on top, you can start early the next day to explore these other trails.

Top 10 single day trekking places near Mumbai | Travelling India
Top 10 single day trekking places near Mumbai. Monsoon is coming soon and we all plan to go on monsoon treks. Some people don't have holiday on Saturdays so here I have top 10 single day trekking places for you.
I am joined by Vinay Mitbawkar. He not only goes on treks but also organizes treks. His trekking group is called Masti Trekkers.
Follow his Facebook page.
Top 10 single day trekking places are as follows
1. Prabalgad fort: Prabalgad fort which was also known as Muranjan or Pradhangad is located between Matheran and Panvel and is visible from Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The fort itself served as a watch tower to keep an eye on nearby forts. It was built on a plateau close to Matheran, but unlike Matheran it does not have a good source of water so make sure you carry a lot of water if you are climbing up.
2. Kalavantin Fort: Kalavantin fort is located next to Prabalgad fort. The beauty of this trek is the amazing rock cut steps that zig-zag their way up the mountain. Kalvantin Durg is also called the Climb to Heaven.
3. Lohagad: Lohagad fort – means Iron fort and is situated in Lonavala region. Lohagad has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time. Getting there is easy by road as well as Mumbai's local train. It is walk-able from Malavli station. It is very good for beginners. Because there are simple steps to climb up and it doesn't take much time to reach the top. The view of stairs from top is beautiful and Vinchukata, which means Scorpion point, that is also a beautiful view.
4. Tikona fort: Tikona fort is close to Lohagad. You can trek both the forts in a day. This fort is very old and there are many stories about it. There are some evidences which suggest that it was built in seventh-eighth century AD. While going to Lohagad or Tikona fort, don't forget to see Bhaje caves which are also nearby.
5. Mahuli fort: Mahuli fort is paradise for trekkers because you have to go through pinnacles formed by group of hills. It is the highest point in the Thane district. It is interesting to climb and has stunning view. Nearest railway station is Asangaon or you can come through Mumbai Nashik highway.
6. Gorakhgad fort: Gorakhgad fort lies in Bhimashankar wildlife reserve. So you can expect a hell lot of forest and greenery. It was used in the era of Shivaji Maharaj, mainly as a stopover point from Junnar via Naneghat. It is a great trekking attraction. There are vertical rock walls which you are supposed to climb to get there but there are also absolutely breath taking views. Though small in size, there is enough availability of water and a lot of space for accommodation.
7. Garbett plateau: Garbett plateau is also not far from Mumbai. It is near Matheran. You can go to Matheran and then go to Garbett Point or walk straight away from Neral railway station to it. It is an easy climb but it takes time to reach the top. Once you reach the top, the view is beautiful. But when everybody is standing at the edge of plateau and looking at the mountain ranges next to it, just turn back and look at the plateau itself. You will find it is very similar to Windows XP wallpaper. Just the rainy clouds have to go away for a while.
8. Peb fort: Peb fort is also known as Vikatgad fort. If you get down at Neral railway station and don't want to go to Matheran or Garbett point, you can go to Peb fort. It is little difficult than Garbett plateau to climb and very similar to Gorakhgad. There are caves in the surrounding areas and dense forest. You will feel being in the heart of nature.
9. Sudhagad fort: Sudhagad fort was called as Bhorapgad in early days. And it is really old. It was built in 2nd century AD. It is near Pali in Raigad. If you like to visit ancient ruins this is your place. There are old temples, two lakes, some tombs, shrines and some other ruins. And from the top some other forts like Sarasgad, Korigad are visible.
10. Sarasgad: Sarasgad is twin fort of Sudhagad Fort. This is also a place of ruins. There is an old Shiva temple at the top. There are caves in the surrounding areas. Big steps carved in stones. Big water tanks carved in huge stones.
Most of these places are between Mumbai and Pune. Hence they are single day trek destinations for people in Pune as well.
