A nocciola at Caffe Gambrinus in Naples Italy
May, 2013 a nocciola is a delicious Neapolitan drink made of crushed roasted hazelnuts (blended into a cream with sugar) and rich espresso. Caffe Gambrinus is just off Piazza Plebiscito and stands outs elegantly against the Bourbon palazzos of the square. This is one of my favorite cafes in Napoli and it was the haunt of many great writers, artists, opera stars, actors, bohemians, politicos and philosophers. I always think about Oscar Wilde when I am there, it is a beautifully designed art nouveau paradise inside, including the afternoon tea salon, the bar, the chocolaterie and sweets room and the exterior cafe tables.
TRAVEL TIP: if you want to pay half the price of sitting down at a table - drink like a local and stand at the bar and have a drink or two and watch them make the beverages or listen to the Neapolitans discuss their dinner plans. Or wander around the decor with a glass of prosecco or a little bag of chocolates.
