A crowdfunding project for Reggie, of Bristol, VA
To crowdfunders with a heart for the homeless, down-on-their-luck people with beautiful souls but difficult life circumstances.
Last week my wife and I were browsing Grand Antiques in downtown Bristol, TN. I heard a piano from across the building and thought someone has turned up the CD player very loud, but then came a voice definetly not coming from speakers. I wondered over and this gentleman, a down-on-his-luck individual named Reggie, let me capture his art. The grin and look on his face when I asked if I could document his music made it clear to me that somebody's interest in him made his day. The iPhone speakers don't do his real musical talent justice, but his soul is transparent as he sings.
Afterwards, he told me his story. He's a convicted felon--he spent 26 years in prison for grand larceny and other crimes. He was recently evicted from his small apartment one block east of the TN/VA state line and stays near the HoneyDo Services building in Bristol, VA. Grand Antiques lets him come in and play one of their antique pianos, he says, to belt out when he feels down. His music is Gospel and he is studying to become a pastor. His faith is apparent in the lyrics of the song, an original he wrote himself.
He showed me a legal document (with Bristol City letterhead and relevant signatures) that his landlord had presented to him upon eviction. It was boilerplate, saying the landlord has decided he is no longer able to stay there. Reggie said one of the disputes that led to the eviction was that his landlord did not approve of his growing a garden in his small patch of lawn. He readily admitted, too, that he was behind on his rent and was partially at fault for being evicted. He did not ask me for money.
I asked him if he'd allow me to post his video on facebook and crowdfuding sites to try and help him out financially. He smiled and said yes, though I doubt he knew what crowdfunding is. I gave him my number and we agreed he would call me one week later. If I had raised any money to help him get back on his feet, I would meet him at Grand Antiques with a check for the amount raised.
We tried to make a copy of the eviction letter but the antique shop's was broken. I wish I had the letter, as I know it's difficult to give money based on a video and one guy's story. But, I can say with honesty that I think Reggie was sincere and his story truthful--and, the letter looked official to me. The antique shop owners confirmed to me that he is homeless. I asked if he had a bank account that I could link the donations page directly to, without the need for me to collect the money and then give it to him. I know there are a lot of scammers out there, and you have to be careful, especially when you have as little evidence as I do with this request. If you want to confirm my credibility and intentions you can check out the other videos I have hosted on my YouTube channel, to which this one is as well. I have worked for charitable organizations in the past, and you can see my personal and professional profile on my website:
For donors of $50 or more, I will send another video of another of Reggie's original songs with a personal thank you from him.

How Cruise Ships are and Will Change to Meet Our Future Vacation Expectations
How Cruise Ships are and Will Change to Meet Our Future Vacation Expectations Cruise ships are constantly evolving as vacationers demand the latest technology and conveniences. Libraries are quietly disappering from cruise liners along with the large photography centers and original internet lounges. Instead, cruise lines are installing high speed wireless WIFI to allow their passengers to enjoy features like Netflix on board ship along with texting, emailing etc. Golf simulators are long gone, skeet shooting died decades ago, and now we are beginning to see virtual reality lounges enter the cruise ship world.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
