Madeira (Portugal) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

Funchal, Madeira - 4 days in the fascinating capital of this young, sub-tropical island
On our first day in Funchal we headed down to the port for a trip with the Ventura for dolphin and possible whale watching. Our marine biologist Vanessa first went through the birds, dolphins and whales that we might see before we headed out to the rib. We did see the Cory’s shearwater skimming the sea and then our boat found a pod of bottle nosed dolphins that swam all around the boat. We motored to the Cabo Girão cliff west of Funchal where a small strip of land at the bottom of the cliff support crops such as mangoes. Back on land we visited the Jardim Municipal where the dramatic Silk Floss tree was in flower before having lunch at The Ritz. After lunch we did a tour of Blandy’s Madeira wine lodge then the cathedral. On the second day we started at the Mercado dos Lavradores, the central market in Funchal with its adjacent fish market where the black scabbardfish was on sale. We walked down Rua de Santa Maria through the old town to the Lizard, the Saturday flea market and then on to Fortaleza de sã Tiago, the 17th century fort built to protect the harbour. A quick look at the Praia da Baffeirinha lido and impressively decorated Igreja do Socorro before climbing the hill to the Miradouro Vila Guida where monarch butterflies fluttered in the flowers. Back down to old town to see a shop selling everything you could make in Portuguese cork, then the Museu da Quinta das cruses and the national tile museum, passed a noisy wedding on our way back. The third day we took the Funchal Cable car to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens with its tile collections, African sculptures and tree ferns. We watched a little of the Monte Toboggan ride before taking the cable car to the Botanical Garden for a stroll and then back to downtown Funchal. Our fourth day started at the Embroidery museum where the lovely, if expensive, local crafts were on display, then the city of sugar museum, a stop to have a delicious cake at Padaria Sesame before the wonderfully decorated Jesuit Church. Across town via the Parque de Santa Catarina for a beer at the 1891 Reid’s Palace and a swim at the Complex Balnear Lido.

Madeira Island - Caught in the warm trade winds of the North Atlantic, visitors here are spoiled with dramatic cliffs and coastal charm.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Madeira Island:
Pushed up by volcanic forces from the seafloor, #MadeiraIsland is a wonderful #vacation #destination. Volcanic activity settled millennia ago, yet the island’s rich soils and spring climate means Madeira explodes in lush vegetation all year round.
#Visit Madeira’s capital, Funchal. Walk streets paved with patterned stonework and #explore centuries-old churches and homes, which have endured pirate raids, German U-boat attacks, and earthquakes.
Head to Cabo Girão, one of the world’s mightiest cliffs. At Garajau, watch divers far below enjoying the undersea gardens of the marine reserve.
Madeira’s ring road strings together coastal towns and beaches, each one a little different from the last. Madeira’s northern coastline offers plenty of drama and adventure too.
Explore Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest peak. From here, experienced hikers can follow knife-edged trails to even higher peaks, the same peaks that guided Portuguese mariners to Madeira six centuries ago.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.
