New Glarus, Wisconsin
Known as America’s “Little Switzerland”, New Glarus, Wisconsin is about a 3-hour drive from Chicago and it’s a community heavily influenced by its Swiss settlers. Succeeding generations have kept alive the traditions and Swiss-German language. The local New Glarus Brewing keep people coming, as well as all the beautiful trails, delicious restaurants and fun festivals. In this video, we feature New Glarus Bakery, Maple Leaf Cheese and Chocolate Haus, New Glarus Hotel Restaurant, and Glarnerladen Antiques & Collectibles. Hope you enjoy!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | New Glarus (#805)
[Original Airdate: January 31, 2019]
It doesn’t take long to figure out the heritage of New Glarus. If the Swiss flags or the edelweiss at Brenda’s Blumenladen don’t give it away, the Alpine architecture and the brown Swiss cows all over town sure will! You know that people are proud when they name their organizations after the city. That’s just what New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus Welding, New Glarus Kinderchor and the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant did, which made them really easy for John to find. And he was happy to be “Swissified” by Chef Roland Furst, cultural expert Peter Etter and Swiss shop owner Esther Zgraggen. He was surprised when he was asked to milk the animals at the Voegeli and Lucky Dog farms, but at least he was good at it! John may never get to the original Glarus in Switzerland, but who cares? New Glarus is better anyway!

Jane Addams Trail (Northbound) to the Badger State Trail in WI - Part 4
Stretching north from Freeport, Illinois, to the Wisconsin state line, the Jane Addams Trail is a natural wonder. Expect to see birds and wild animals-from exotic aerial hunters, such as owls and hawks, to run-of-the-mill squirrels and deer.
It's named for Jane Addams, who was born in 1860 and blossomed onto the international stage as a humanitarian and pioneering social worker. In 1931, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the first American woman to receive the honor. Her other shining achievements include the 1889 co-founding of Chicago’s Hull House, a settlement facility for recently arrived immigrants, and the co-founding of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920. Her namesake trail lies less than 2 miles from Cedarville, where travelers can visit her childhood home and gravesite.
Starting in Freeport, the crushed-limestone trail enters a heavily wooded area that supports a wide variety of trees and birds, and likely some school groups as well. The natural attractions make for popular educational field trips.
A separate paved section of the trail is also available in Freeport about a third of a mile east of the trail's main route. It parallels N. Riverside Drive for most of its 1.7-mile route through rural countryside. Eventually, this segment will stretch farther east to reach the Pecatonica Prairie Trail.
As you travel from Freeport north to Orangeville, you will be able to enjoy many nice views of some jutting rock sides and local creeks. These vistas are peppered among the other wooded areas and more common fields of agriculture that predominate the landscape.
In Orangeville, the Richland Creek trailhead provides a quiet and convenient place to end your trip. The location features a covered shelter and nearby gas station with refreshments. If you brought your camera, be sure to get a photo near the Orangeville sign to commemorate your Jane Addams Trail trip. The official end of the trail is at the Illinois-Wisconsin state line, but it is easy to miss, so pay close attention if you need to turn around at the border. From there, you can continue north along Wisconsin's Badger State Trail all the way to Madison. The state line is very close to a quiet rural road leading to a quaint family farm on the left.

I love historic photos, Albany Wisconsin is an amazing village that has a very interesting past. I hope to create more videos that help us remember and preserve the heritage of the town......

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Minocqua (#808)
[Original Airdate: February 21, 2019]
Most people go to Minocqua to play in the north woods of Wisconsin – and there is no finer playground. If you are thinking about cabins, lakes, waterski shows and supper clubs, then you are right on the money. But after this half hour, you’ll also think of jerky, popcorn, zoo safaris and vitamins – no kidding! Hopefully you’ll also gain an understanding of its true culture, one that is rich with Ojibwe and founding family histories. The word “eclectic” comes to mind. But “rejuvenating” may be the best description of Minocqua.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Havenwoods (#704)
[Latest Airdate: May 10, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 1, 2018]
Havenwoods is one of those neighborhoods in Milwaukee that we've always known. We just didn't know it had a name --- or so much industry --- or so much positive energy --- or a bona fide forest!
Lots of people know this neighborhood as home to Growing Power and Westlawn Gardens. Model train enthusiasts know this area because they know WMK Walthers, famous US manufacturer and distributor of model railroad equipment. Restaurants and culinary companies know about Havenwoods because they buy Kallas Honey and Dang That's Good soda. Hmong Americans know this community because of the Milwaukee Asian Public Market and because this neighborhood is home to the largest Hmong population in the state. And now John knows where to find Milwaukee Job Corps, TMJ Innovations, Court Lanes and the only urban forest in Wisconsin.
It was a joy to meet everyone in this revitalized area who helped us get to know Havenwoods!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Door County's Quiet Side (#811)
[Original Airdate: March 21, 2019]
Quiet must be a relative term since the Lake Michigan side of Door County was pretty loud and active when John was there in October of 2018. Then again, maybe it was John who was loud and active!
But he was also completely impressed by Waseda Farms and Door County EMS’s unbelievable boat, awed by the married and incredible artists at Martinez Studio, and soothed and entertained by pianist Dan Meunier. He was mostly surprised (and sometimes completely confused) by the Walloon speakers, rejuvenated on the grounds and in the chapel at Bjorklunden, and inspired as he hiked at Cave Point. He was satiated with Swedish limpa bread at Town Hall Bakery, lobster at Harbor Fish Market and Grille, and the famous pecan rolls at Grandma’s Swedish Bakery at Rowley’s Bay Resort.
And just so you know, not even one of the people he met was quiet about how much they love living, working and playing in this area of Door County.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Rapids (#613)
[Original Airdate: April 6, 2017]
Smack dab in the middle of the state, we found Wisconsin Rapids. True, it’s not hard to find, but it is hard to leave! Wisconsin Rapids is a paper making town, and has been almost 200 years. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we came. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the world, and John had never been in a bog – ever! The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries treated us to an amazing experience that almost left John speechless (almost, but thank goodness, not quite!). But after we experienced all things cranberry, we learned that the unique geology in the center of our state allowed for the building of what is quickly becoming a world renowned destination for golf. And with a name like “Rapids” you know we spent some time along the river. Wisconsin Rapids is gorgeous. We hated to leave, but it was the perfect place to wrap up our sixth season.
