Blowing shrink wrap at Sugarloaf Harbour Marina
A windstorm that saw high sustained winds and gusts in excess of 100 km/h whipped shrink wrap off boats at Sugarloaf Harbour Marina in Port Colborne, Ontario on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
The winds also saw water levels on Lake Erie rise and cause flooding at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park.

POCOMAR P1 Launch
Cold, windy weather didn’t stop Port Colborne Marine Auxiliary Rescue (POCOMAR) members from launching the unit’s second rescue vessel, the Donald R. Workman, Thursday afternoon.
“We had a great turnout for the launching of P1 (the Donald R. Workman), and as well as that, there were countless hours of work put in preparation for this,” said executive officer Zach Walters.
Walters said the crew took the vessel, built in Port Dover, out on Lake Erie for sea trials before bringing it back into the docks at Sugarloaf Harbour Marina.
“It’s not yet in service for the season as we have some minor work that still needs to be completed, but both of our vessels are in great operational condition.
The unit’s other vessel, the Ted Cook – an eight metre jet boat called called P2 – has been in the water for a few weeks now. It responded to a task (a call), before it was in service, on April 16 to assist with a disabled vessel just outside of the marina in Port Colborne.
It was the earliest in the season that POCOMAR, part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, has ever been called out to vessel in distress.
While volunteers wait for the boating season to get underway, the unit will hold an open house Saturday, April 30 at its headquarters, upstairs in the former Marlon Marina building, 3 Marina Dr., Port Colborne. It gets underway at 10 a.m.
Members will be taking part in the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day at the Vale Centre, 550 Elizabeth St., Port Colborne, Sunday, May 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer minor first aid knowledge, as well as general water safety tips, and demonstrations.
For more information about POCOMAR, visit POCOMAR.org, on Twitter at @pocomar1, and on Facebook at facebook.com/POCOMAR/.
FACTS:
POCOMAR is part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Central and Arctic Region covering Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Northwest Territories, and is consistently the busiest rescue unit in the region.
The unit covers Lake Erie from the mouth of the Niagara River to the mouth of the Grand River in Haldimand County, an area of approximately 240 sq. nautical miles (432 sq. kilometers) and covers approximately 35 nautical miles (63 kilometers) of shoreline.
