Ard na Mara in Ardnaturrish Beg, near lovely Glengarriff on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, featured in the RTE Home of the Year television series, which acknowledges homes of unique design and character.

The coastal property sits behind electronic gates on a one-acre site of mature grounds with magnificent panoramic views of Bantry Bay, Hungry Hill and the Sugarloaf mountain in an area of exceptional natural beauty. Built 20 years ago, the house has been upgraded in recent years and the interiors are now properly luxurious and filled with light.
A large open-plan area on the ground floor functions as a combined living room, kitchen and dining area with a multi-fuel stove, contemporary kitchen units and polished concrete work surfaces on the central island. A handy back kitchen/utility room is designed to keep mess to a minimum. The bathrooms are fitted with high-end sanitary ware and there are quality finishes throughout. The house is made cosy by double-glazed windows and a high level of insulation.
The master bedroom with its en suite bathroom is at ground-floor level, as are two guest bedrooms and the family bathroom.
The mezzanine floor features a den-style living room positioned to take advantage of the sea and mountain views - and there is also a study/studio with en suite bathroom.
Outbuildings include a garage/games room with an upper floor area that could, subject to planning permission, be converted into a studio or guest apartment. The property also includes a large, wood-clad workshop. The gardens are landscaped to maximise privacy and enhance the views.

The Beara Peninsula
While somewhat overshadowed by the neighboring Ring of Kerry, the rocky coastline of the Beara Peninsula also offers tourists many spectacular off-the-beaten-track vistas.
From Kenmare in County Kerry, 27 km. on route N71 leads to Glengarriff at the head of Bantry Bay in County Cork. From there, heading southwest for 32 km. on the coastal road R572, leads to the busy fishing port and natural harbor of Castletownbere ---- a great stopping point for a lunchtime or dinnertime meal of fresh fish. Beyond Castletownbere, a narrow coast road twists and turns as it follows the rugged coastline of the Beara Peninsula. Isolated farmhouses dot the landscape, set among farm fields bounded by countless stone walls. Wild flowers such as fuchsia, foxgloves, thrift and red valerian edge the road and carpet the seaside meadows. With views across the Kenmare River to the mountains of the Ring of Kerry, route R571 leads back to Kenmare after a circular drive of about 150 km. ---- a trip not to be rushed!
