Russian ruble to be circulated in Chinese border city
A Chinese city bordering Russia greenlights the circulation of ruble.
The People's Bank of China has authorized Suifenhe City on the China-Russia border in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province as a pilot zone where the ruble can be officially used alongside the yuan.
Suifeihe City is the major hub of Heilongjiang Province's trade with Russia.
It accounted for 80 percent of Heilongjiang's export of goods to Russia and reported a foreign trade of 7.59 billion U.S. dollars in 2014.
Ruble is already widely used in Suifenhe, particularly in shops and hotels targeting Russian customers.
City officials believe that legalizing the use of ruble will promote bilateral economic cooperation and boost tourism.
And the pilot project will not threaten the yuan as the domestic currency.
China and Russia signed a currency swap agreement last year.
Official figures show cross-border yuan-dominated payments between China and Russia reached 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of this year.
That is a 112-percent year-on-year increase.
Suifenhe accepts payments in Roubles
Sui Fen He in Northeast China's Hei Long Jiang Province has become the first Chinese city to allow the use of a foreign currency. The city borders Russia and it recently announced the acceptance of Russian roubles as an official currency. That's all in a bid to attract more trade and business from across the border.

With tight capital controls, the use of foreign currency in China has been very limited. But as the central government moves to make the RMB a more international currency, policies are changing fast. In 2013, the Chinese government allowed the use of the Russian Ruble in the border city of Suifenhe in China's northeast.

Heilongjiang
Heilongjiang is a province of the People's Republic of China located in the northeastern part of the country. Heilongjiang literally means Black Dragon River, which is the Chinese name for the Amur. The one-character abbreviation is 黑. The Manchu name of the region is Sahaliyan ula, from which the name of Sakhalin is derived, and the Mongolian name with the same meaning is Qaramörin.
Heilongjiang borders Jilin in the south and Inner Mongolia to the west; it also borders Russia to the north and east.
