Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh, India
Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, India is an artificial lake at the foothills of the Shivalik hills. This 3-km² rain fed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills.
It had a depth of 18 feet originally, but due to heavy silt deposits, the depth reduced to 8 feet 6 inches and area to 1. 5 sq km. Sukhna is a sanctuary for many exotic migratory birds during the winter months. About 30 species are residents and the rest are migratory.
In 1988, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, recognized 228.66 ha of Sukhna Lake as one of the National Wetlands that needed priority for conservation. It was initially spread over 230 hac but has been reduced to around 154 ha in 2007. The reduced area is a result of siltation. Over a period of time, the silted part was converted into Sukhna Lake Reserve Forest. The water level has come down from around 5m in 1958 to 2m in 2004. Between 1958 and 1962, nearly 20% of the lake got silted since a lot of soil erosion took place from the agricultural land in the 4,200-ha catchment.
Despite a Supreme Court ban on constructions near the Sukhna Lake, rules continue to be flouted. Chandigarh has allowed constructions in the southern part of the lake, which according to the master plan is supposed to be a ‘green belt' and ‘no-construction zone'.
In 2003, Haryana irrigation expert came up with desilting plan, to clear silt of the lake. About 30 fishes died at the surface of the lake in 2008, due to over population and lack of oxygen and also because of the presence of silt in the lake. The administration has approved a Rs 73-crore plan for desilting in 2008. To improve tourism infrastructure at Sukhna Lake, the government has sanctioned Rs.27.3 million in 2009. The residents, alleging that the Haryana Government had acquired the notified forestland for the development of township, filed 1st PIL of the lake in 2003. The PIL was dismissed in the same year, which saw the residents filing special leave petition (SPV) in 2005, which was also dismissed later in the same year.
Latest news 2018
THE CHANDIGARH Administration has finalised a proposal of installing the sewage treatment plant (STP)for additional water resources to fill the Sukhna Lake to maintain its water level during the summers.
Common Pochard
Their breeding habitat consists of marshes and lakes with a metre or more water depth. Pochards breed in much of temperate and northern Europe into Asia. They are migratory.
Common Coot or Eurasian Coot
The coot breeds on freshwater lakes and ponds. It occurs and breeds in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. The species has recently expanded its range into New Zealand. It is resident in the milder parts of its range, but migrates further south and west from much of Asia in winter as the waters freeze

Sometimes, we all need to take a break from our modern mechanical life. Chasing after the mirage of so-called success, comfort and luxury, we tend to forget who we really are. And then we become unhappy and frustrated with life. Maybe at some point, we start to yearn to hear Birds chirping, wind buzzing, leaves rustling. We long to be with mother nature to heal our wounds in our heart created by the horse race of modern civilization.
If you guys are interested to visit Kansal Reserve forest, I totally recommend it. It's a nice, quiet and serene jungle situated near Chandigarh in the foothills of Shivalik Mountain range. All you need to do is just apply for a trekking permit to the Chief Conservator of Forest, Chandigarh.
I did some photography which I'll eventually upload on my photography page Capturing The World:

Sukhna Lake Chandigarh - City Beautiful Chandigarh - Sukhna Bird Sanctuary - Care of body and spirit
The manmade picturesque Sukhna lake in Chandigarh city, India at the foothills of Shivalik range is an idyllic place for quiet communion with nature and for offering water sports activities such as boating, yachting, water skiing, etc. The creation of the Lake was one of the greatest gifts from Le Corbusier and P L Varma the Chief Engineer.
This 3 sq km rainfed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Sukhna lake is an inseparable part of the Chandigarh city. Le Corbusier had foreseen that the residents of the city would be drawn towards it for the 'care of the body and spirit'.
The lake comes alive with tourists, and families thronging the promenade, the Chef Lakeview, Citco's fast food joint, shops and of course the jetty for a boat ride. For children, there are a number of joy-rides at the amusement park.
The curvilinear profile of the promenade along the banks of Sukhna hums with activity from dawn to dusk. As the golden hue of the dawn shimmers through its placid waters, a stream of joggers hurry along to savor the fresh morning air, while a few others find time to meditate in tranquility. Photographers and painters love to capture its scenic beauty, groups of students arrive to browse through their books under the shady trees. Families come out on a picnic to complete their foray into the lap of nature. As night descends, the lights from the hill resort of Kasauli reflect in the lake and present a bewitching sight.
Sukhna is a sanctuary for many exotic migratory birds like the Siberian duck, Storks, and Cranes, during the winter months. The Lake has been declared as a protected national wetland by the Government of India. People of Chandigarh love Sukhna. During summers, there are streams of men, women, and children from all walks of life offering voluntary service to desilt the lake bed for about three months. This annual ritual has been a regular feature since long.
Sukhna Lake is the venue for many festive celebrations too. The most popular is the Mango Festival held during the monsoons when scores of varieties of mangoes are on display.
The Lake was the venue for the Asian Rowing Championships. It has the longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia. It also has facilities for other water sports like water surfing, skiing, and skulling.
The Lake is fringed by a golf course to the south, and the famous Rock Garden to its west.
Sukhna Lake is, without doubt, a tourist spot that is a must-visit for every visitor to Chandigarh.

A trekking trip managed by Chandigarh forest department on 6th Oct 2019 to educate and motivate people about forest and wildlife. Many banners and posters are there to pass a message to save tree and plants more and not to kill innocent animals. I thanksful to chandigarh forest department and chandigarh Government to give me such a wonderful wildlife experience and to manage such natural, peaceful green world for us.
Information: Chandigarh has 3245 hectares under forest and most of it is hilly. The forest areas are mostly around Sukhna Lake, Sukhna Choe and Patiala ki Rao. Near village Kansal on the outskirts of Chandigarh towards the hills is a reserve forest, entry to which is restricted. One has to obtain an entry pass to see it. A large area of natural forest is preserved intact and one can have a real feel of a forest. Inside this forest is located a rest house which is surrounded by beautiful grassy lawns and flower beds.
