►Read the blog:
Welcome to Sukhothai, the first Kingdom of Siam! Sukhothai Historical Park is located in northern Thailand about a 4-5 hour drive from Bangkok. There are over 193 ruins, a palace, many temples and the largest one being Wat Mahatat.
The best time to come is around 9am, it takes three hours to see the entire historical park. You can rent a bike, you can walk and you can pay an extra 50 baht and even bring your car. Follow me through Sukhothai!
Wat Si Chum the most visited monument in Sukhothai Historical Park.
The buddha that you see measures over 50ft in height and 30 feet wide. The name of the buddha is Phra Acana which means the one that is not afraid. The best time come is in the morning, it's an extra fee because it is outside the city walls.
If you have an extra day in Sukhothai I suggest you visit it's sister city of Si Satchanalai. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What you can visit here are over 300 ruins, buddhist shrines and temples dating back to the 13th century.
I suggest you visit the main shrine of Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat. It is located outside the historical park which dates back to 1237 A.D. Here you can see free standing columns and a massive buddha.

Wat Sri Chum - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
วัดศรีชุม
Wat Sri Chum is located north of the old city walls and is part of the UNESCO Sukhothai Historical Park and was built in the late 13th century.
The temple of the bodhi tree (the Bodhi Tree was a large and very old sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as the Lord Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment) features a large solid building (Mondop) with a single narrow slit at the front, rising almost to the full height of the structure. Through this narrow slit can be seen a huge image of the Lord Buddha called Phra Achana, which means 'one who is not frightened' or unpeturbed'
The mondop once had a roof, now gone, so the interior space is open to the elements.........

Sukhothai Historical Park - Paying respect to King Ramkhamhaeng
พ่อขุนรามคำแหง
King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was the most famous monarch of the Kingdom of Sukhothai and ruled from 1279-1298. He is regarded as a valiant warrior. At age 19, Prince Khamhaeng participated in his father's successful invasion of the city of Sukhothai, formerly a vassal of the Khmer, establishing the independent Sukhothai Kingdom.
He is also considered a wise statesman, a scholar, diplomat and benevolent monarch to his people. Under his reign Sukhothai was both prosperous and well governed.
He is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet in 1283, which has little altered to this day.
He also established Theravada Buddhism as the state religion of the country.
Hence, King Ramkhamhaeng, is highly esteemed by the Thai people, and his bronze statue in the centre of the Historical Park in Sukhothai attracts many Thai people, daily, to pay their respects.
Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat is the most important and arguably the most impressive temple in the Sukhothai Historical park. The name of the temple, translates to Temple of the great relic.
Founded by King Sri Indraditya sometime between 1292 and 1347, Wat Mahathat was the main temple of the city and the Kingdom of Sukhothai. The deasign of the temple is based on the Mandala, representing the universe, with the principal stupa (chedi), built in 1345 to enshrine relics of the Lord Buddha. This is surrounded by smaller stupas in eight directions. Four of these show Khmer influences, the other four, reflect the Lanna style. On both sides of the principal stupa are two 9 metre high standing Buddha images, known as Phra Attharot.........
Sukhothai UNESCO World Historical Park Thailand. อาณาจักรสุโขทัย
Sukhothai is a city in North Central Thailand. Home to the Sukhothai Kingdom between 1238 and 1438. The old capital is now in ruins and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Historical Park. New Sukhothai is situated outside the Old Sukhothai Historical Park.
We spent one day walking around the Sukhothai Historical Park in and around the ruins of the old city. It can be likened to a Thai Angkor Wat or Bagan but a much quitter site with no where near as many tourists. The grounds are nice and the best way to get around is to rent a bike and cycle through the park.
The second day was literally just spent cycling through the country side outside New Sukhothai.

Sukhothai historical park - Sukhothai Thailand
Sukhothai (Thailand) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Sukhothai in Thailand.
Sukhothai, ‘Dawn Of Happiness’, this, the name of the first capital of Thailand, once marked the beginning of a new epoch. During the course of its one hundred and twenty year flowering period several of the city’s impressive buildings were created such as the magnificent Wat Mahathat Temple.Beyond the old city walls is the fascinating Wat Si Chum Temple which owes its national fame to the huge seated Buddha sculpture of Phra Atchana that is more than eleven metres high and is one of the largest and most imposing Buddha statues in Thailand. Picturesque yet almost sad the century old ruins seem to be reflected within the water of the nearby moats, canals and ponds yearning for a bygone time when the area was full of buildings that in turn were full of life. But despite its continuing decay Sukhothai is still a truly magical experience.

Sukhothai Historical Park - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
The Sukhothai Historical Park is about 13 km west of the modern city of the same name.
Sukhothai means literally translated Dawn of Happiness. In 1238, the city was founded from an ancient Khmer settlement. For 140 years, it was the capital of the first independent kingdom Sukhothai. In 1378, Sukhothai became part of the Thai kingdom of Ayutthaya and lost importance.
On 70 km² there are still about 193 ruins of the former capital. In 1991, the UNESCO declared the Sukhothai Historical Park a World Heritage Site.
Massive earth walls and moats, which are about 2x1.6 km surrounded the former capital. Four entrance gates lead into the city.
We enter the Sukhothai Historical Park to the east and see Wat Traphang Thon right in front of us.
Wat Traphang Thon lies on a small island in the midst of an artificial lake and can be reached via a narrow wooden bridge. Next to a modern ordination hall, we see a footprint of Buddha in a Mondop (vestibule) next to a Chedi.
A Mondop is a place to exhibit particularly sacred objects. The size of the footprint is believed to symbolize the spiritual greatness of Buddha. It was made in 1359 and contains 108 auspicious symbols.
To the east of the lake is the only monastery in the Sukhothai Historic Park that is inhabited by monks. During our visit, the people celebrated a temple festival with extensive meals.
From Wat Mai, only the base of the prang is preserved. Around this, some columns of the original hall still stand.

Wat Si Sawai is one of the oldest temples in the Sukhothai Historical Park, having been founded at the end of the 12th century or early 13th century and before the coming of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
Initially the temple consisted of three prangs, constructed by the Khmer as a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva.
The prangs were left unfinished and were only completed during the Ayutthaya era in the 15th century they were finished in the Lopburi- style. At this time the temple adapted to the needs of the Buddhist faith, with a Vihara being added to the south if the cntral prang.
These prangs are adorned with stuccoed carvings of several mythological creatures like the multi headed Naga serpents, Makaras (a sea creature) and Kala, a mythological monster like creature without a lower jaw often found depicted on temples in Angkor.
