Sukuh (Indonesian: Candi Sukuh Indonesian pronunciation: [ˈtʃandi ˈsukʊh]) is a 15th-century Javanese-Hindu temple (candi) that is located on the western slope of Mount Lawu (elevation 910 metres (2,990 ft)) on the border between Central and East Java provinces.
Sukuh temple has a distinctive thematic reliefs from other candi where life before birth and sexual education are its main theme. Its main monument is a simple pyramid structure with reliefs and statues in front of it, including three tortoises with flattened shells and a male figure grasping his penis. A giant 1.82 m (6 ft) high of lingga (phallus) with four testes, representing penile incisions, was one of the statues that has been relocated to the National Museum of Indonesia.

Sukuh is one of several temples built on the northwest slopes of Mount Lawu in the 15th century. By this time, Javanese religion and art had diverged from Indian precepts that had been so influential on temples styles during the 8th–10th centuries. This was the last significant area of temple building in Java before the island's courts were converted to Islam in the 16th century. Candi Sukuh - Ditemukan oleh arkeolog pada masa pemerintahan Gubernur Raffles tahun 1815. Usaha pelestarian komplek candi ini dilakukan oleh Dinas Purbakala sejak tahun 1917. Konon, candi ini didirikan pada abad ke 15 masehi semasa dengan pemerintahan Suhita, Ratu Majapahit yang memerintah pada tahun 1429-1446. Belum banyak wisatawan menyadari, bahwa Candi Sukuh yang terletak di lereng Gunung Lawu, Kabupaten Karanganyar yang mudah dicapai dengan kendaraan bermotor baik roda dua maupun roda empat, karena hanya berjarak sekitar 27 km dari pusat kota Karanganyar. Candi Sukuh ini sesungguhnya merupakan candi paling menarik di Jawa. Bukan cuma bangunan-bangunan fisiknya yang mengentalkan hal itu. Namun suasana alam yang berkabut tebal serta hawa dingin menusuk tulang yang selalu tersaji saban hari, sering kali menebar nuansa mesum.

The founder of Candi Sukuh thought that the slope of Mount Lawe is a sacred place for worshiping the ancestors, nature spirits and the observance of the fertility cults. The monument was built around 1437, as written as a chronogram date on the western gate, meaning that the area was under the rule of the Majapahit Kingdom during its end (1293--1500).Some archaeologists believe the founder had cast the fall of Majapahit, based on the reliefs that displaying the feud between two aristrocratic houses symbolizing two internal conflicts in the kingdom.

Sejarah Candi Sukuh Yang Menggemparkan Dunia Karena Menggambarkan Alat Vital Manusia
Candi Sukuh terletak di lereng barat G. Lawu, tepatnya di Dusun Sukuh, Desa Berjo, Kecamatan Ngargoyoso, Kabupaten Karanganyar, Provinsi Jawa Tengah, Indonesia ????????. Lokasi Candi Sukuh berada pada ketinggian + 910 meter di atas permukaan laut. Candi Sukuh ditemukan kembali dalam keadaan runtuh pada tahun 1815 oleh Johnson, Residen Surakarta pada masa pemerintahan Raffles.
Selanjutnya Candi Sukuh diteliti oleh Van der Vlis pada tahun 1842. Hasil penelitian tersebut dilaporkan dalam buku Van der Vlis yang berjudul Prove Eener Beschrijten op Soekoeh en Tjeto. Penelitian terhadap candi tersebut kemudian dilanjutkan oleh Hoepermans pada tahun 1864-1867 dan dilaporkan dalam bukunya yang berjudul Hindoe Oudheiden van Java. Pada tahun 1889, Verbeek mengadakan inventarisasi terhadap candi Sukuh, yang dilanjutkan dengan penelitian oleh Knebel dan WF. Stutterheim pada tahun 1910.
Candi Sukuh berlatar belakang agama Hindu melambangkan kesuburan karena patung & relief banyak menggambarkan organ vital. Candi ini diperkirakan dibangun pada akhir abad ke-15 M. Berbeda dengan umumnya candi Hindu di Jawa Tengah. Upaya pelestarian Candi Sukuh telah dilakukan sejak jaman Belanda. Pemugaran pertama dilakukan oleh Dinas Purbakala pada tahun 1917. Pada akhir tahun 1970-an Candi Sukuh mengalami pemugaran kembali oleh Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan hingga 2016.
