Sulgrave Manor and the NSCDA
As the ancestral home of America's first President, George Washington, Sulgrave Manor stands as a symbol of the friendship and deep connection between the United Kingdom and the United States. Four generations of Washingtons lived at Sulgrave and in 1924 the NSCDA raised funds to endow the Manor and Grounds in perpetuity. As part of their tour of England, a group of Dames attended Dames Day over the weekend to celebrate the special symbolism of this property.
The United Kingdom and America are tightly bound together by custom and culture, and Sulgrave Manor, by illuminating the origins of America’s most famous family, helps us to understand how this came about.” Lord Fairfax of Cameron

Banbury Cross Players present William Shakespeare's The Tempest
BCP’s “in the round” performance brings you closer to the magical action, and with music and dance, this production promises to be a fully fantastical, engaging voyage into The Tempest!
Prospero rightful Duke of Milan (and his three-year-old daughter Miranda) gets betrayed by his brother Antonio who steals his dukedom while Prospero was busy learning magic in his library.
Prospero and Miranda get shuttled off to an island in a wreck of a boat and there they’ve been for the last twelve years. Prospero comes across magical sprit Ariel (imprisoned by former inhabitant of the island the witch Sycorax) and releases him into his service.
Then the action begins. It's stormy – “tempestuous” you might say - when we meet some characters on a boat – among them the King of Naples and several of his attendants. The boat splits in half and the people float off into the sea.
Cut to dry land and Prospero is chatting with his daughter Miranda. We learn that Prospero was the source of the magic that caused the storm that sank the boat. And he did it for good reason. On the boat was his usurping brother Antonio. Prospero thinks the time is right for action and revenge.
Whilst Antonio plots to murder Alonso so Sebastian (brother of the King of Naples) can become king, on another part of the island Alonso’s handsome son Ferdinand was washed ashore alone. Convinced that his father and everyone else from the boat is dead his grieving is interrupted by the arrival of the beautiful Miranda.
The scene is set, as only Shakespeare can (with the aid of a drunken butler, a manic jester and a twisted monster to boot) for this turbulent, enchanting tale to play out to its poetic conclusion.
