Jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang - An awesome experience from North Sumatra
Jungle trekking is the primary activity in Bukit Lawang as it is the gateway to the nearby Gunung Leuser National Park .
Most tourists hire a guide as the jungle is easy to get lost in and requires a permit from Gunung Leuser National Park guide office.
Even though sightings of the orang-utan and other wildlife can never be guaranteed, when following the instructions of your guide the chances are favorable.
Getting too close to an orangutan increases the risk of passing on disease and viral infection, which jeopardizes the orangutans chances of survival and in turn the health and survival of the wild orangutan population in the entire area.
In the forests of Gunung Leuser National Park you can also meet the most famous organgutan – Mina. She is is extremely smart and knows exactly how it works. When there’s a group of people on a jungle trek and Mina appears, a lot of guides are panicking. You have two options: to lave the food behind for Mina and run or to stay calm, try to keep distance and hope that she’s in a good mood and not too hungry.
Another interesting amnimal is the Thomas Leaf Monkey. They have mohawk-style hair, and leap into air with wild abandon as they move from tree to tree.
If you want to go on a multiple day trek make sure you are fit and in good condition. The humidity coupled with the intensity of grade of the hills makes for some hard work but many options for spot. The reward at the end of your jungle adventure is a late afternoon paddle in the river back to the village.
We would like to thank our guide Nurdin, he was great!!

SUMATRA - how to travel Indonesia? (Mentawai Islands, Bukit Lawang, Medan etc.)
How to travel Indonesia? Indonesia has 17.508 islands you could possibly visit: Bali, Java, Kalimantan, Lombok, Komodo or Sumatra.
We travelled Sumatra and had a spectacular time here.
Let's start with some quick facts about Sumatra. First of all, Sumatra is a big island. Whatever you plan to cover on your trip, you will realize fast that it is hard to see all the highlights of Sumatra. We had to skip a lot. It's not only that the island itself is so big, it is also hard to get around. Compared to other countries in Southeast Asia we think that Indonesia is one of the countries which makes it a little bit harder to get around. There are not many tourist busses like in Thailand or Cambodia (and no open bus tickets like in Vietnam). This is also nice as you will definitely meet and travel with locals. On the other hand it was really hard sometimes to find the right bus terminal and not to end up being scammed. Another quick fact about Sumatra: this island was quite touristy for a while, like 20 years ago, but it is not anymore. There are some main spots like Lake Toba or Bukit Lawang for example. But at places like Bukittinggi, Harau Valley, Lake Maninjau you can be pretty much alone - not seeing (m)any other tourists.
As I said it is hard to cover all the main spots of Sumatra. Here is a list of the places we went to:
1. Medan: huge city, 2 Million people are living here, we tried to leave as quick as possible.
2. Bukit Lawang: The main spot to go. Here you can hike through the jungle spotting wild Orangutans and other species.
3. Bukittinggi: nice small town - not many tourists.
4. Lake Maninjau: a place to relax, swim in the lake, eat some fresh fish or try other Indonesian food.
5. Harau Valley: rock formations, waterfalls and rice fields. Here you can wake up in your guesthouse next to a huge rock, having beakfast on the balcony.
6. Padang: bigger, smelly city, nice hotels, restaurants and malls.
7. Mentawai Islands: beautiful islands, perfect for snorkeling and surfing, really hard to get here on you own, jungle trekking to meet the tribe people.
Tube Rafting in Bukit Lawang - Sumatra
In the rainforests of Sumatra are many opportunities to enjoy a taste of river rafting. One of them is tube rafting or tubing in the village of Bukit Lawang, which is divided by Bohorok River. It runs straight through the village and is part of what makes the place so special. The Bohorok river is a popular venue for tubing. Tubing is floating down the river in an inflated truck inner tube. You can hire tubes at many points along the river in the village for the day, walk up stream, and then float down the river.
Rafting traditional ‘jungle style’ on large tubes tied together by expert guides is fun and amazing adrenaline experience. Tubes are attached together to form a kind of canoe and our guide Nurdin as ‘captain’ makes as reach the village safely.

Bukit Lawang, Sumatra - A hidden village of friendly people and beautiful nature
Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area) and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation.
A flash flood hit Bukit Lawang on 2 November 2003.The disaster destroyed the local tourist resorts and had a devastating impact to the local tourism industry in the area. Around 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 kiosks and food stalls, 35 hotels and guest houses were destroyed by the flood; 239 people including 5 tourists were killed, and around 1,400 locals lost their homes.Local authorities and an environmental NGO attributed it to illegal logging. Thanks to several international cooperation agencies, the site was rebuilt and re-opened again in July 2004.

SUMATRA: Bukit Lawang and Gunung Leuser (Indonesia) - Orang-utan Trek
How to get to Bukit Lawing/Gunung Leuser national park?
Most of the guides tell you, you need to take a bus at the bus terminal Pinang Baris. But when we arrived no bus was going and some people tried to scam us. So we went back to main road, just next the to Pinang Baris (Jalan T.B. Simatupang - walk up to Mawar Bakery).
Some small mini busses are driving around here, so we talked to one guy and he took us to Bukit Lawang (Gunung Leuser national park) for 25.000 Indonesian Rupiah. The bus ride takes around 2,5 hours and they will drop you at a bus terminal close to the actual town of Bukit Lawang.
Good advice: Book your accomodation in advance! Some of the guesthouses will send someone who picks you up. You still need to take a becak though, But the ride takes around 10 minutes only and costs 5.000 Indonesian Rupiah.
Where to stay in Bukit Lawang?
There are many guesthouses in Bukit Lawang (in the middle of the Gunung Leuser national park) where you could stay. The town is great, small and very relaxed. You could easily stay here for a week or longer. We stayed in a guesthouse called Garden Inn. Before booking your accommodation, check out where it is. Some of them are a little bit up in the hills, you have a great view, but you also need to hike up a little bit. In low season we paid 150.000-175.000 Indonesian Rupiah per night for a double room. There is no ATM in Bukit Lawang, so bring some money. We got around 3.000.000 Indonesian Rupiah (205 €; $220; £145) for the both of us inlcuding:
-accommodation for 4 nights
-food and some beers
-the bus going back to Medan
-two day Orangutan tour
How to do a orang-utan Trek in Bukit Lawang?
There are several ways to do a Orang-utan trek: 1 day tour, 2 day tour or 3 day tour. We did a 2 day tour and we can really recommend this. We wouldn't do a shorter one, as you won't see that much. Doing this tour you will see thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons and orang-utans (we saw four grown-ups and three babies). A two day tour costs 60 € ($65; £42,50) and includes food and the camp. But keep in mind, it will be a lot hiking (uphill and very very hot), so it is exhausting. Anyways, it was one the best experiences we made during our travel, so do it! Bring some mosquito protection for the way and water. There were nomosquitos at the camp. For an extra 10 € you can raft out of the jungle, back to Bukit Lawang. It's worth it and you don't really want to hike back.
How to leave Bukit Lawang?
There are two ways to leave Bukit Lawang, you can book a bus in your guesthouse, maybe going to Lake Toba. Our you take a becak back to the bus terminal, where you can get a public bus to Binjai (25.000 Indonesian Ruphia). Here you can take an ALS bus back to Medan.

Sumatra Kids RESCUED ME from Bukit Lawang River! ????????
I left the big city of Medan to travel to the more peaceful and serene Bukit Lawang. A jungle village of Sumatra, located in the Gunung Leuser National Park, that's famous for it's wild orangutans and rivers.
I took the cheap public bus which leaves from outside Mawar Bakery on the street called Pinang Baris. There's a common scam there where touts will try to convince you to pay for your ticket up front at an extortionate rate. I'd read about this before hand and sure enough it happened to me while I was sitting on the bus waiting for it to leave. Unfortunately I didn't get that on camera. The correct fare is only 30,000 and it paid AFTER reaching your destination.
The food in the Mawar Bakery is excellent and very good value, so it's worth stocking up there before getting on the bus.
At Bukit Lawang Bus Station there were many touts. They are just trying to help you by sell orangutan trekking tours. I just told them all no as I would prefer to book a trusted guide through my hotel. They were very persistent and sticky though.
In Bukit Lawang village, which is only 1.3 km away on a flat road, so is easily walkable, I checked in to my hotel: Wisma Leuser Sibayak. It's one of the more costly hotels in the area but still very cheap. I took one of their best rooms at 400,000 IDR but it seemed like other than size there wasn't much difference between that and the cheaper rooms, starting at 200,000 IDR.
I started the stay with a light meal in the hotel restaurant. Gado Gado is a local Indonesian meal of boiled vegetables and peanut sauce. The healthiest food I'd eaten in a while.
My main activity of the day was tubing and swimming in the river. It didn't start off too well and I had to rely on the locals kids to rescue me.
My first (half) day concluded with a delicious goat barbecue beside the river, hosted by the hotel owner Bob.

Bukit Lawang in the heart of Sumatra is one of the natural wonders of Indonesia. Surrounded by jungle and relatively unspoilt to the outside world, this place is a shining example of how ecotourism can work in Indonesia.
