This is something I've always wanted to do - going on a jungle trek with wild Orangutans in North Sumatra. This is one of the best things I've done in Indonesia so far and would highly reccommend checking it out!

The WILDEST I've ever been - SUMATRA JUNGLE TREK DAY 3
And thus ends the most incredible experience trekking through the Sumatran Jungle looking for orangutans. We managed to see a total of 13 orangutans plus some monkeys. I’d highly recommend using Heri Kibo’s company! He took care of my entire itinerary and trekked the whole jungle along with us!

INDONESIA Bukit Lawang, Sumatra (hd-video)
Nice little place not far from the jungle where you can watch with a bit luck orang utans.
Dschungel Unterkunft - Thomas Retreat Roomtour - Bukit Lawang - Sumatra - Indonesien

Jungle Trek Bukit Lawang Orangutan Sanctuary, Sumatra September 2019
Bukit Lawang Jungle Trek...This was our first real jungle trek and we did it to face our fears and to overcome a few life challenges. The jungle trek was for 2 days and 1 night in one of the largest orangutan jungle in the world, with around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area. We saw a chilly snake, 11 orangutans, pig tail monkeys, long tailed macaques, a gibbon, spiders, large ants, King Louie and a thomas leaf monkey. We trekked for 9 hours before reaching camp where we stayed in a bamboo hut overnight. The jungle really came alive at night. A tiger was spotted 2 days ago so we didn't sleep too well. There are two well known orangutans in the area, Mina and Jackie. Mina is an aggressive orangutan where as Jackie is the friendliest. We didn't see either of them but what we saw and experienced, was life changing for us. We would reccomend this for anyone who visits beautiful Sumatra.

Jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang - An awesome experience from North Sumatra
Jungle trekking is the primary activity in Bukit Lawang as it is the gateway to the nearby Gunung Leuser National Park .
Most tourists hire a guide as the jungle is easy to get lost in and requires a permit from Gunung Leuser National Park guide office.
Even though sightings of the orang-utan and other wildlife can never be guaranteed, when following the instructions of your guide the chances are favorable.
Getting too close to an orangutan increases the risk of passing on disease and viral infection, which jeopardizes the orangutans chances of survival and in turn the health and survival of the wild orangutan population in the entire area.
In the forests of Gunung Leuser National Park you can also meet the most famous organgutan – Mina. She is is extremely smart and knows exactly how it works. When there’s a group of people on a jungle trek and Mina appears, a lot of guides are panicking. You have two options: to lave the food behind for Mina and run or to stay calm, try to keep distance and hope that she’s in a good mood and not too hungry.
Another interesting amnimal is the Thomas Leaf Monkey. They have mohawk-style hair, and leap into air with wild abandon as they move from tree to tree.
If you want to go on a multiple day trek make sure you are fit and in good condition. The humidity coupled with the intensity of grade of the hills makes for some hard work but many options for spot. The reward at the end of your jungle adventure is a late afternoon paddle in the river back to the village.
We would like to thank our guide Nurdin, he was great!!

Orangutan Jungle Trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra | Travel Vlog
Going on an orangutan jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra has been the highlight of my recent trip to Indonesia! But as amazing as this experience was, I can’t not touch upon some important issues that this trip has brought to light (even more) for me - mainly the deforestation of the rainforest to make space for palm oil plantations, causing the loss of habitat for many now critically endangered species in the process, as well as unethical tourism. Please watch the video until the end and help me spread awareness.

INDONESIA Bukit Lawang village, Sumatra (hd-video)
Reupload because of music rights claim, now only original sound.
The village is situated near Gunung Leuser national park.
People live and work mainly alongside the river.
Only the local market is a couple of kilometres inland.

Chased by Orangutans in Sumatra (Bukit Lawang jungle vlog)
First part of our indonesian expedition. In Sumatra we booked a 3 days (2 nights) trek in the Gunung Leuser National Park near Bukit Lawang.
Price was around 240 Euros for 2 persons (also including accomodation before and after in Bukit Lawang)
Prices are pretty much similar everywhere. There are a lot of accomodation and tourist agencies there where one can arrange treks- for 1, 2 or more days.
Sleeping in tents in the jungle- no electricity, no water (just in the rivers), no GSM coverage!
Even if there is no more a orangutan feeding centre, the chances are very hight for you to see the animals. The guides will know how to make that happen ;)
We stayed at Wisma Leuser Sibayak:

A once in a lifetime experience trekking with Orangutans | Bukit Lawang (Indonesia Ep 4)
Bukit Lawang is the gateway to trekking with Orangutans in Sumatra, and Sumatra is one of only two places in the world you can see Orangutans in the wild. We were not going to miss out, and on arriving in Bukit Lawang we booked a three day two night trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. The trekking was awesome, although a bit of rain and some steep trails made it hard work in places. Our wildlife encounters included nine Orangutans, two species of monkey, lots of birds, monitor lizards, and a snake. The accommodation was rustic but the food was great. The trekking finished with a beautiful waterfall for a swim and then rafting out of the jungle back to Bukit Lawang. The bat cave was an interesting way to finish our time in Bukit Lawang. A Bukit Lawang orangutan trek is an amazing 'bucket-list' experience. Awesome!

Jungle Trek - Bukit Lawang Orangutan Sanctuary - Sumatra
On Sumatra, Indonesia July 2014
A HUGE orangutan interrupted our trek [Sumatra Jungle Trek DAY 2]
The most exciting thing happened to us while trekking through the Sumatran Jungle looking for orangutans and I'm so happy I got to experience it and share with you too! Stick around for the next day of adventures which include waterfalls, tubing, food and of course more orangutans.
FIRST OF ALL - Sorry for the laaaaate upload. I'm finishing my contract at Universal Studios Singapore very soon and I'm crazy busy moving out of my place, organising upcoming travel, helping friends with video projects (coming soon) and closing loose ends in Singapore all the while trying to enjoy and soak up my last few weeks here! (Excuses excuses excuses)
SECONDLY - Soz for the shaky footage... Hiking and vlogging is hard to do at the same time.

Sumatra Kids RESCUED ME from Bukit Lawang River! ????????
I left the big city of Medan to travel to the more peaceful and serene Bukit Lawang. A jungle village of Sumatra, located in the Gunung Leuser National Park, that's famous for it's wild orangutans and rivers.
I took the cheap public bus which leaves from outside Mawar Bakery on the street called Pinang Baris. There's a common scam there where touts will try to convince you to pay for your ticket up front at an extortionate rate. I'd read about this before hand and sure enough it happened to me while I was sitting on the bus waiting for it to leave. Unfortunately I didn't get that on camera. The correct fare is only 30,000 and it paid AFTER reaching your destination.
The food in the Mawar Bakery is excellent and very good value, so it's worth stocking up there before getting on the bus.
At Bukit Lawang Bus Station there were many touts. They are just trying to help you by sell orangutan trekking tours. I just told them all no as I would prefer to book a trusted guide through my hotel. They were very persistent and sticky though.
In Bukit Lawang village, which is only 1.3 km away on a flat road, so is easily walkable, I checked in to my hotel: Wisma Leuser Sibayak. It's one of the more costly hotels in the area but still very cheap. I took one of their best rooms at 400,000 IDR but it seemed like other than size there wasn't much difference between that and the cheaper rooms, starting at 200,000 IDR.
I started the stay with a light meal in the hotel restaurant. Gado Gado is a local Indonesian meal of boiled vegetables and peanut sauce. The healthiest food I'd eaten in a while.
My main activity of the day was tubing and swimming in the river. It didn't start off too well and I had to rely on the locals kids to rescue me.
My first (half) day concluded with a delicious goat barbecue beside the river, hosted by the hotel owner Bob.

Finding WILD Orangutans in Sumatra // VLOG 002
We started our stay in Indonesia with a 3-day-long hike through the jungle near Bukit Lawang, Sumatra. The tour was called “jungle explorer“ and operated by EcoTravel ( We’ve purposely picked this company since they make sure to leave no footprints in the jungle and have a general focus on fairness and sustainability on all levels.
Besides the amazing experience of seeing wild orangutans in their natural habitat and sleeping in a jungle for 2 nights, those 3 days made us realize one thing: We have to do everything we can to protect the jungle and all its beautiful inhabitants!
We personally stopped purchasing any products that contain palm oil and hope to inspire you to do the same after watching this video :)
If you want to find out more details or check out some of the photos we took, you can find our blog post here (it's in English ;)):
