The WILDEST I've ever been - SUMATRA JUNGLE TREK DAY 3
And thus ends the most incredible experience trekking through the Sumatran Jungle looking for orangutans. We managed to see a total of 13 orangutans plus some monkeys. I’d highly recommend using Heri Kibo’s company! He took care of my entire itinerary and trekked the whole jungle along with us!

SUMATRA - how to travel Indonesia? (Mentawai Islands, Bukit Lawang, Medan etc.)
How to travel Indonesia? Indonesia has 17.508 islands you could possibly visit: Bali, Java, Kalimantan, Lombok, Komodo or Sumatra.
We travelled Sumatra and had a spectacular time here.
Let's start with some quick facts about Sumatra. First of all, Sumatra is a big island. Whatever you plan to cover on your trip, you will realize fast that it is hard to see all the highlights of Sumatra. We had to skip a lot. It's not only that the island itself is so big, it is also hard to get around. Compared to other countries in Southeast Asia we think that Indonesia is one of the countries which makes it a little bit harder to get around. There are not many tourist busses like in Thailand or Cambodia (and no open bus tickets like in Vietnam). This is also nice as you will definitely meet and travel with locals. On the other hand it was really hard sometimes to find the right bus terminal and not to end up being scammed. Another quick fact about Sumatra: this island was quite touristy for a while, like 20 years ago, but it is not anymore. There are some main spots like Lake Toba or Bukit Lawang for example. But at places like Bukittinggi, Harau Valley, Lake Maninjau you can be pretty much alone - not seeing (m)any other tourists.
As I said it is hard to cover all the main spots of Sumatra. Here is a list of the places we went to:
1. Medan: huge city, 2 Million people are living here, we tried to leave as quick as possible.
2. Bukit Lawang: The main spot to go. Here you can hike through the jungle spotting wild Orangutans and other species.
3. Bukittinggi: nice small town - not many tourists.
4. Lake Maninjau: a place to relax, swim in the lake, eat some fresh fish or try other Indonesian food.
5. Harau Valley: rock formations, waterfalls and rice fields. Here you can wake up in your guesthouse next to a huge rock, having beakfast on the balcony.
6. Padang: bigger, smelly city, nice hotels, restaurants and malls.
7. Mentawai Islands: beautiful islands, perfect for snorkeling and surfing, really hard to get here on you own, jungle trekking to meet the tribe people.

Exploring Incredible North Sumatra
Hey! We are Sumatra travel bloggers Agung and Carly. For the last two years, we've lived in Sumatra together and travelled to some of the most incredible parts of North Sumatra - from the jungle of Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang in the Gunung Leuser National Park to the beaches of Pulau Weh and the awe-inspiring volcanic crater that is Lake Toba.
This video is a snapshot of our travels exploring North Sumatra over the last two years. We're not your average tourists. We want to share authentic Sumatra with you and show you what it's really like to live in such a mindblowing place.
Our travel blog shares in-depth destination guides, insider travel tips, and up to date information on travelling Sumatra. Check it out here:
We don't want to be influencers taking cheesy (and boring) posed photos in the Instagram hot spots and pretending to be picture perfect. Because we both live in Sumatra and lead simple lives, we don't have a fancy drone or GoPro. Our videos may not be amazing quality or perfectly planned, because we capture life as we live it. But we promise what you see is a real slice of Sumatran life.
Thanks for joining us and we can't wait to share our Sumatra travels with you!

Sumatra Adventure!
Gunung Leuser National Park, Tangkahan, Berastagi, Lake Toba, Samosir island, well packed 4 days in Sumatra!
Gunung Leuser National Park : This is a world heritage site, with very high biodiversity. We could easily get a guide and cover the trails. Also home for the Sumatran Orang Utans
Tangkahan : Nice village sitting on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, has a elephant sanctuary, where you can watch, play, bathe with the Sumatran elephants and even do nature trails with them in the park. We stayed in Jungle lodge, but plenty of accommodation options available now
Berastagi : Place not to be missed! Its a hill station, sitting next to active volcanos of Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak. Very scenic and beautiful, also near to knife like waterfalls of Sipiso-Piso
We climbed Gunung Sibayak volcano to see the sun rise, and then walked to the hot springs. Hot springs are set up in a beautiful setting, and are very natural and clean at the same time
Lake Toba : This is so BIG!. There is an island in the middle of the lake, called Pulao Samosir, which is as big as Singapore. Doing a speed boat ride around the island is a must, along with visiting Tuk-Tuk village. We stayed in Inna Parapat, with awesome views of the Lake Toba, right from your room

North Sumatra Bukit Lawang July 2019
We did the 6 day trek with Expedition Jungle - Edy the tour guide who grew up in the jungle was an excellent knowledgeable leader. Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan. We spent 3 nights in Medan before departing to Bukit Lawang. The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation.
Thousands of hectares of National Parks in Sumatra have been deforested or degraded. Despite its protected status, the National Parks in Sumatra is under enormous pressure. Most of their lowland forests are being rapidly logged and over exploited for palm oil.
Between 1985 to 2001, Sumatra has lost 12 million hectares or 48% of rain-forests in the last 22 years. Since 2007, the island of Sumatra has only 30% of rain forests left.... so where is the 70%? Western, Chinese and Japanese companies are purchasing palm oil from Sumatra. The palm oil mill is owned by a Chinese / Malaysian company.
I Found Abandoned Batak Homes in Samosir, Indonesia. ????????
My motorbike adventures in Samosir island led me off road. You definitely couldn't call the rocky dirt path that I was riding on a road.
The wee Honda scooter I was riding couldn't cope with the terrain so I ditched it and continuted adventuring with my two strong legs. I walked 2km into a rural farm area, finding a row of 5 abandoned Batak style houses. Did I let myself in for a wee look? Of course I did.
I eventually found what I was looking for, an awesome viewpoint to take in some of the beauty of the island and Lake Toba.
On the way home I visited a local restaurant to eat some Nasi Goreng while all the farmers swigged their coconut arrack.

Through the Sumatran Mountains - Adventure 4
There's probably nothing more boring cinematographicaly than footage taken out of the window of a moving vehicle. It's okay for a few seconds, buy if you want to make car video compelling as a montage, you really have to work hard at it and add a lot of additional eye candy in the form of transitions and effects. That's what I tried to do here. As always, a great tune in the background doesn't hurt.
