Description: Sumela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary at Melá Mountain within the Pontic Mountains range, in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey. According to another etymological theory regarding the origin of the monastery's name, it comes from the Laz word სუმელა , which means Trinity in English.Nestled in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 metres facing the Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015 the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It is scheduled to reopen for visitors on Assumption day 2018. The Monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon.

The Impressive and Remote Rock Cut Church - Sumela Monastery, Turkey
Jaws gaping, the Explore group stood on an overlook in a valley and once again thought...How in the world did they do that?... Sumela Monastery was built over a cave and appears to hang off a steep cliff at an altitude of 1,200m/3,900 feet.
According to legend, an Icon of Virgin Mary was found in the cave by two Athenian monks in 386 A.D., traveling from Athens to Trabzon. They decided to build a church to create a house for the icon. Bequests enriched Sumela Monastery over the years and it became a place of pilgrimage.
Prepare to walk up a trail, mostly paved with stones. Vehicles must stay below in a parking lot. Only once inside the only entrance does the staggering sight of these rock-cut churches become apparent. My poor words can't adequately describe the glorious frescoes. Oohs and ahhs will have to make do.
