Short History about Khor Rori (sumhuram):
Khor Rori is an ancient South Arabian Archeological Site near salalah, Oman. It was first discovered by James Theodore bent during his travel in the region in the late 19th century. The site has been excavated by the American Foundations for the study of man in early 1950's and by the Italian mission to Oman(IMTO)since 1994. It has been world heritage site by UNESCO by 1998.
The fortified city was founded as an outpost for the kingdom of Hadhramaut at the end of the first century BC, initially it was founded primarily with defensive function then developed later into a city in the first century AD. The foundation of the city by the king of Hadhramaut is closely associated with rising importance of sea trade at the end of the first century BC between the Mediterranean and India. In this period the Hadrami kingdom was economically and politically dependent on its ability to control the coastal region.
The Italian mission to Oman of the university of Pisa, directed by Alessandra Avanzini, has been investigating the site for the last 20 years. Their new findings include a village of the medieval period. It shows the presence of humans from the paleolithic period, that is about 60,000 years ago. Evidence of late Neolithic age have also been found. A large quantity of pottery from Italy shows the exchanges with the Mediterranean cultures.
And for those of you interested in a bit of fable, sumhuram has also another story of fame and glory to tell. It is also connected to the queen of Sheba of king Solomon's fame. Sumhuram is claimed to be one of the locations of Queen of Sheba fort and was believed to be her Summer home. Noted archaeologist Wendell Phillips excavated it in 1952 and it is claimed to be the oldest palace in Oman.

There are several different accounts of the Queen of Sheba–in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. However, outside of these–for she was an extraordinarily intelligent and open-minded queen regnant, who ruled by her own right a flourishing kingdom with expansive international trade, exceptional agriculture, highly advanced irrigation systems, enormous water dams, and architecture of complex and breath-taking design. This place is said by some to be her castle ruins, but some deny it. Only Allah knows the best!
She has been mentioned in the holy Quran many times.
“Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.” (Qur’an 27:23)
“Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Be not haughty with me but come to me in submission [as Muslims].' ” (Qur’an 27:30–31)
Wadi Darbat there is a great city for Sumhuram, the now there protected sum Sumuram Archaeological Park, on the main coast road. With the nearby city of Dafar, it was primarily and from the most recent ports in southern Arabia and a vigilant channel for the international commercial incense network. Production for production based on the inscription on the lock.
According to the official site manual, the city was built in the third century BCE. Founded by a local leader named Sumhuram (or Samaram). According to Nicholas Clapp in The Way to Ubar, the inscription states that the city of King Il'ad Yalut I of Hadhramaut (in present-day Yemen) is no earlier than 20 AD was founded. The city survived for 500 (maybe 800) years before being gradually abandoned in the fifth century AD, perhaps due to the fact that Khor Rori is closed, which closed the river to navigation.
Inside, the city is divided into residential, commercial and religious areas, with small vestiges of a labyrinth of densely populated small buildings. These were originally at least two floors (as evidenced by the remains of stone stairs), although most of them do not survive much on the foundations of their walls on the ground floor. floor. The most impressive structure of the city is the Temple of Sin (god of the moon Mesopotamian), which was built on the northwestern wall of the city - pay attention to the finely carved limestone basin in the ritual toilets. Nearby is the monumental building, which houses the main freshwater reservoirs and fountains of the city. At the back of the complex is the small sea gate from which the goods were transported to boats on the water below.
This fascinating park is a part museum and part archaeological site and you can wander around the ruins and experience the archaeologists’ artwork. Pay a visit to the gallery to the site to see some of the First century BC to third century AD finds from the site including some evocative Kursi inscriptions. You may find the toilets but no other facilities here.

Sumhuram Archaeological Park-Taqah , Salalah
Looking across one of Dhofar's prettiest bays at peacefully grazing camels and flocks of flamingos, it’s hard to imagine that 2000 years ago was a trading post on the frankincense route and one of the most important ports on earth. Today little remains of the city except the painstakingly excavated ruins of Sumhuram Archaeological Park. This fascinating park is part-museum and part–archaeological site, and you can wander around the ruins and watch the archaeologists at work.
Visit the gallery within the site to see some of the 1st century BC to 3rd century AD finds from the site, including some evocative Kursi inscriptions. There are toilets and a small coffee shop inside the grounds, and there's a track down to the beautiful beach.
