JAPANESE NEW YEAR! SUMIYOSHI TAISHA - Osaka, Life in Japan, Vlog Ep 26
We went to Sumiyoshi Taisha (shrine) in Osaka for the new year visit to a shrine, as most of the Japanese people do on January 1st. Surrounded by nature and other historical buildings, the atmosphere was amazing. We were also welcomed by a lot of Japanese food stands (street food) to fill our appetite.

HUGE OSAKA FESTIVAL!
We spent a full day in Osaka celebrating the city’s often overlooked shrines. Sumiyoshi Shrine is so beautiful with its arched bridge and multiple wedding processions. The Hiraoka Festival is one of the largest matsuri festivals in Osaka. It was truly unforgettable. Dinner at CocoCurry was a perfect end to the day.

FAQs:
What camera equipment do you use?
- Panasonic G85, Sony RX100v, iPhone 7+, DJI Osmo Mobile, Rode Videomicro (New videos now being filmed on Fujifilm X-H1)
What editing software do you use?
- Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018
Why don’t you post videos more often?
- I’m still in high school and am involved in a lot of extracurricular activities, and it takes many hours to create each video. I’d rather create quality videos than pump out rushed, crappy ones.
Is your last name really Suzuki?
- Yes.
Are you part Japanese?
- Yes, quarter. My grandfather is originally from Yamagata, Japan.
How do you afford to travel to Japan?
- The Old Man travels for his job enough that he has lots of award points to redeem. Plus, traveling to Japan, while not cheap, is not as expensive as most people think.
Why doesn’t the Old Man ever appear in your videos?
- He’s shy. He made a brief appearance in the Takayama video.

Extended Highlights of Traditional Rice Planting Matsuri at Sumiyoshi Taisha Osaka-Japan.
Every year on June 14th the annual “Rice Planting ceremony” (御田植神事) is held at Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) in Osaka-Japan. Its origin dating back to Empress Jingū (神功皇后) who reigned from 201 to 269 AD. The rice planting event is livened up by performances of different groups some from nearby elementary and junior high school.
The more than two hour matsuri starts with a procession around the rice paddy by all participants. The Ōta-nushi (太田主) or “head of the rice planting ceremony” prays over the fields and sacred water is splashed around the rice paddy’s. Now its time for the sacred cow (斎牛) to be brought in to plow the field a rare sight nowadays. While eight shrine maidens called “Yaotome - 八乙女” perform a sacred dance at the stage the rice planting begins. They are singing songs to encourage each other for the arduous task ahead. The singing and music is said to be of a benefit to the growing of the rice.
A lady dressed in a white and purple kimono called “Mitoshime - 御稔女” performs an ancient dance with hand gestures from Noh theater. She performs a “dragon dance” to the Gods to pray for rain.
There 30 man and woman doing the planting. The woman are called “Kaeueme - 替植女”.
Next-up is a Samurai Warrior (風流武者) who preforms a dance on the stage. Now warriors and foot soldiers coming running unto the field. They are dressed in white and red uniforms and carry sticks. To the delight of the spectators they do some stick fighting. In case you are wondering the white ones represent the Genji clan or (Minamoto clan - 源氏). The red ones are from the Heike clan or “Taira clan - 平氏”. Together they reenact the Genpei War (源平合戦 - 1180–1185) between these two dominant forces.
Lastly the “Rice Planting Dance” (Taue odori - 田植踊) is song while young girls dance around the paddy fields. The ceremony is closed with the traditional song of Sumiyoshi “Sumiyoshi odori - 住吉踊).
