EXPLORING BEIJING'S BEAUTIFUL SUMMER PALACE, CHINA ????????
The ninth day of my journey around China, where I travel from Shanghai, to Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an and Beijing. I arrive in Beijing and walk around the famous hutong streets, followed by a failed trip to the Forbidden City - where I then decide to visit the Summer Palace instead. I cap off the day by tasting some of Beijing's speciality meat, duck.

The Summer Palace in Winter | Beijing, China | Yiheyuan
For over 200 years, the Summer Palace has served as the vacation spot for those in China's government. This beautifully crafted landscape was designed to complement the surrounding nature. In the summer you can take a boat ride along the Kunming Lake, and in the summer you can skate on the ice. I visited in late January so I rented a metal scooter and ice picked my way across the frozen water. On the other side you'll find Longevity Hill. Climb 150 steps to get a wonderful vantage point of this tranquil escape. There is also a stunning four-tiered Buddhist pavilion.

Summer Palace, an Imperial Garden in Beijing (UNESCO/NHK)
The Summer Palace in Beijing -- first built in 1750, largely destroyed in the war of 1860 and restored on its original foundations in 1886 -- is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.

The Summer Palace in Beijing
Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing City, the Summer Palace is 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from central Beijing. Being the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China, it greatly influences Chinese horticulture and landscape with its famous natural views and cultural interests, which also has long since been recognized as 'The Museum of Royal Gardens'.
The Summer Palace is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing, China. The Summer Palace is mainly dominated by Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake. It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres (720 acres), three-quarters of which is water.
Longevity Hill is about 60 metres (200 feet) high and has many buildings positioned in sequence. The front hill is rich with splendid halls and pavilions, while the back hill, in sharp contrast, is quiet with natural beauty.
The central Kunming Lake covering 2.2 square kilometres (540 acres) was entirely man-made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In the Summer Palace, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures.
The construction started in 1750 as a luxurious royal garden for royal families to rest and entertain. It later became the main residence of royal members in the end of the Qing Dynasty. However, like most of the gardens of Beijing, it could not elude the rampages of the Anglo-French Allied Force and was destroyed by fire. According to historical documents, with original name as 'Qingyi Garden' (Garden of Clear Ripples), the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) was renamed after its first reconstruction in 1888. It was also recorded that Empress Dowager Cixi embezzled navy funds to reconstruct it as a resort in which to spend the rest of her life. In 1900, the Summer Palace suffered another hit by the Eight-Power Allied Force and was repaired in the next two years. In 1924, it was open to the public. It ranked amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1998, as well as one of the first national AAAAA tourist spots in China.

The Summer Palace, also called the Garden of Virtue and Harmony, lies at the Western Hills northwest of Beijing.
Construction began in 1153 during the Jin Dynasty and was completed in 1764 during the Qing Dynasty. In 1860 the Palace was destroyed by English and French troops to humiliate the imperial family. In 1888, the Emperor's widow Cixi began reconstruction of the Palace using resources which should have served to reconstruct the Imperial Fleet. During the Boxer Rebellion, the Palace was once again destroyed and rebuilt in 1903.
In addition to the private residences of the Guangxu Emperor and Cixi the Emperor's widow, the 730m long corridor tracing Chinese history through the ages is particularly impressive with its 8000 pictures and scenes. Moving past the Mountain of Longevity, we come to the Marble Boat which, in contrast to the Imperial Fleet, has never changed its position.
On the other side of the Mountain of Longevity, you find the remains of the Sumeru Temple and the old Suzhou Road. Suzhou Road was built as a shopping street exclusively for the Empress where she could ......
Summer Palace Tour (Beijing)
The Summer Palace / 颐和园 / 頤和園, is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing, China. It serves as a popular tourist destination and recreational park. Mainly dominated by Longevity Hill / 万寿山 / 萬壽山 and Kunming Lake / 昆明湖, it covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres (1.1 sq mi), three-quarters of which is water.
Longevity Hill is about 60 metres (200 feet) high and has many buildings positioned in sequence. The front hill is rich with splendid halls and pavilions, while the back hill, in sharp contrast, is quiet with natural beauty. The central Kunming Lake, covering 2.2 square kilometres (540 acres), was entirely man-made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill.
In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.
The entire Summer Palace is centred around Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, with the latter covering about three quarters of the area. Most of the important buildings were built along the north–south axis of Longevity Hill, which is divided into the front hill and the back hill. There are three small islands within Kunming Lake: Nanhu Island, Zaojiantang Island and Zhijingge Island. The West Dam of Kunming Lake divides the lake into two. The East Dam was constructed during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor. The attractions in the Summer Palace may be divided into six different sections or scenic areas: the Halls, Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake, the Farming and Weaving Picture Scenic Area, the Long Corridor, and the Central Axis area.

Our advice would be to arrive mid-afternoon to avoid the tourist buses. It’s easy to spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful gardens and walking by the central Kunming Lake. The Summer Palace Beijing is an excellent way to escape the madness of downtown Beijing so pack a lunch and go enjoy the grounds.
