Hiking 7000 ft. Up to JAPAN's Highest Hot Spring
In this adventure during Robby's trip to Japan in late 2019, Robby and his friend Darrell head to Nagano prefecture to catch the first snowfalls of early winter as they head to the high summits of the Yatsugatake mountain range.
The goal for this trip was to hike to the highest hot spring in Japan, the famous Honzawa Onsen and climb to the summit of Mt. Tengu and descend down the other side.
The Yatsugatake mountain range is a popular climbing destination for people who live in the Kanto region of Japan surrounding Tokyo as it is in easy access from the capital.
On Day 1, Robby and Darrell take a train to Koumi Station. From there they take a bus to the Midori-ike Trail Head to start the journey.
From there it is a short hike to the picturesque Green Pond Midori-ike and the Shirabiso Lodge.
Continuing along the trail leads to the campsite for Day 1 at Honzawa Onsen and the famous outdoor hot spring which has the highest elevation in Japan at 7000 feet or 2150 meters.
Day 2 was a steep climb out of Honzawa Onsen along the White Sand New Route to the mountain ridge and then a quick scramble up to the summit of the Eastern peak of Mt. Tengu (Tengudake) at 2640 meters.
The decent from the summit is long but passes by the well known Kuroyuri Hyutte mountain hut as the trail heads down to Shibunoyu Hot Spring where there is a bus stop taking them to Chino train station.

Earthquakes caused by Mount Fuji Volcanic Eruption!
Japan's 2011 Earthquake May Lead to Mount Fuji Volcanic Eruption, Study Says.
In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of Honshu, Japan. The quake — the country's strongest ever — and resulting tsunami claimed more than 15,000 lives and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings.
But according to a study published in Science, a new cataclysm from the devastating quake could be on the horizon: a major eruption of Japan's Mount Fuji.
Using seismic data collected in the wake of the earthquake, French and Japanese researchers pieced together a map of the geological underpinnings of Japan most disturbed by the 2011 quake. What they found was alarming: the geology of volcanic areas, particularly the one found underneath Mount Fuji, suffered the most damage from the earthquake, hinting at the possibility that the disturbances could spark the first major eruption of Mount Fuji since 1707.
As The Guardian notes, prevailing logic might seem to suggest that the area closest to the earthquake's epicenter would exhibit the most geological disturbance, but instead geologically volatile volcanic areas suffered the most from the massive tremor.
The volcanic regions are the ones where the fluids trapped in the rock -- boiling water, gas, liquid magma, which cause an eruption when they rise to the surface -- exert the greatest pressure. The seismic waves add to this pressure, causing even more disturbance, Florent Brenguier, the lead author of the study told The Guardian.
Even though Mount Fuji hasn't erupted in more than 300 years, volcanic activity and history are pointing at a potential eruption.
In fact, the strongest earthquake to hit Japan before the 2011 quake, an estimated 8.7-magnitude tremor, occurred back in 1707, just 49 days before Mount Fuji last erupted, Quartz reports. Just four days after the 2011 earthquake, a 6.2-magnitude quake centered near Mount Fuji likely further disrupted the geological underpinnings of the volcano.
Then, in 2012, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention discovered that the pressure in Mount Fuji was nearly 16 times the pressure found in the volcano before it last erupted in 1707, further indicating the stability of the volcano.
Should such an eruption occur now, Quartz notes, the effects would likely be catastrophic. Tokyo, a city of more than 8 million people, is just roughly 80 miles away from Mount Fuji and would likely see volcanic ash that could weigh-down and cripple infrastructure. The more than 1 million people closest to the mountain could experience pyroclastic and lava flows capable of leveling any and all structures.
Still, the study's findings don't mean that an eruption at Mount Fuji is definite.
Climbing Mount Fuji | 12 Hours of Haven
Climbing Mount Fuji: In August, a friend and I climbed Mt Fuji. The climb was worth it for the amazing Fuji sunrise and for that I recommend it.
A country built on a volcanic land, Japan
Mount Fuji is the most popular and representative mountain in Japan, the highest as well as the largest mountain. It has been an active volcanic mountain, rapidly developing for 100,000 years.
Mt Fuji is sitting on a triple tectonic junction; the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the Philippine Sea Plate all converge in the region, beneath Mt Fuji. The plate geologically dividing east and west in Japan, named Fossa Magna, used to be a deep oceanic trench, 1,000 metres below sea level. Several million years ago, volcanic activity changed the trench. It has gradually been leveled it up since then by repeated upheavals and sedimentation, to make Mt Fuji as we can see now. The Japanese Alps, both south and north, Mt Yatsugatake, Suwa-ko lake, Mt Fuji, are all standing on this land developed by upheavals and sedimentation, while the land of the Izu-hanto peninsula (in the southern part of Fossa Magna) was created by volcanic islands moving from the west on the Philippine Sea Plate, and reaching the current location.
The Birth of Mt Fuji
How was Mt Fuji created?
On the land where Mt Fuji currently stands, about 700,000 years ago, there was a volcanic mountain called Komitake. On the southern side of Mt Komitake, active volcanic eruptions took place 80,000 years ago and spewed out lava and mud. About 10,000 years ago, massive volcanic eruptions took place, and the lava spread further and reached to the point of Suruga-wan Bay, and a mountain 3,000 metres high emerged. This is the origin of Mt Fuji. The volcanic activities calmed down afterwards, but eruptions resumed again about 5,000 years ago. On Mt Fuji, volcanic eruptions repeatedly took place from the crater on the top of the mountain, as well as from cracks along the mountainsides from the northwest to the southeast . As a result, about 2,300 years ago, a large-scale collapse followed on the mountainside in the direction of present-day Gotemba town. The latest recorded eruption of Mt Fuji, called the Hoei Eruption, was in 1707. Volcanic ash fell as far as present-day Tokyo. The plates are still moving, and volcanic activities continue.
The symbol of Japan became a World Heritage site
The elegant shape of Mt Fuji covered with snow on the top has become the symbol of Japan. This image is widely acknowledged both by Japanese and foreigners, and it has been used as the subject of many works of art. In 2013, Mt Fuji was registered as “Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration’’, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The height of Mt Fuji is 3,776 metres above sea level, the highest mountain in Japan. There are various mountains in Japan which have a similar shape to Mt Fuji, and are named after Mt Fuji together with their own local names, such as Mt Ezo-Fuji, and Mt Tsugaru-Fuji. There are also many local places named after ‘’Fuji’’, such as Fujimi-cho, which literally means a place where you can see Mt Fuji. These names show how proud the Japanese are of Mt Fuji, and how deeply they are attached to it in their minds.

Although it is the world’s second smallest continent, Europe welcomes more than half of all the tourists worldwide. In fact, 7 of the 10 most visited countries in the world are European nations. It’s easy to see why; a well-preserved cultural heritage, rich history, safety and efficient infrastructure makes visiting Europe a breeze. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Europe:
Hume and Hovell Track - Part 1
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE and support this channel - thank you!
The Hume and Hovell Track is a 426 kms multiday hike that leads from Yass to Albury in NSW, Australia.
It follows the route taken by colonial explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and lies between the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains and the Hume Highway, nuzzled amongst the Snowy Valleys region.
The walk doesn't have to be done as a single thru-hike, but like me, can be undertaken in stages. Here's part 1 of my 3 days between Talbingo and Tumbarumba.

Japan remains one of the most intensely fascinating places in the world, effortlessly intertwining modernity and tradition. Seek serenity in Kyoto by visiting one of thousands of temples spread throughout this former capital, or go skiing in Niseko or summit Mt. Fuji. Of course you can also kick back in one of the country’s many hot springs, where the rich mountain minerals will leave your skin feeling brand new. Once you’ve achieved maximum relaxation, hit up Tokyo’s bustling night life or go hiking in Kamakura.
What Japan lacks in square footage it makes up for in endless options for your itinerary. In this case, size definitely doesn’t matter! Consider booking a tour that allows you to see all of the country’s unique highlights, without missing the subtleties you can enjoy as a backpacker:
Remember to pack clothes appropriate for the region you’re visiting, and if you’re planning on travelling from the North to the South outside of summer months, make sure you bring everything from flip-flops to snow boots.
Japan’s currency is the Japanese Yen. Credit card and debit transactions aren’t common, so be sure to bring plenty of cash with you no matter where you travel within the country. Dining out doesn’t have to be expensive if you visit the right restaurants, and you can often enjoy a pre-fix menu for lunch for a very reasonable cost. Be sure to sample the Japanese whiskeys, as Japan is an expert whiskey distiller!
