Summit Mall - Christmas Season 1970
Movie by William A. Ling. Summit Mall in Fairlawn Village a suburb of Akron Ohio. Shot during the Christmas Season in 1970.
Back then, I thought it was very tricky to shoot this in a way that it made people move at 4 times normal speed. While amusing for a few seconds it gets annoying.
So, I have slowed the speed back down to normal, but it makes people seem to float through the scenes. Oh well, I can't go back 49 years and shoot it again, so here it is.
See if you can find your parents.

Akron (/ˈækrən/) is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. It is located on the western edge of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Cleveland. As of the 2018 Census estimate, the city proper had a total population of 198,006, making it the 119th-largest city in the United States. The Greater Akron area, covering Summit and Portage counties, had an estimated population of 703,505.[2]
The city was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams, along the Little Cuyahoga River at the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal. The name is derived from the Greek word signifying a summit or high point. It was briefly renamed South Akron after Eliakim Crosby founded nearby North Akron in 1833, until both merged into an incorporated village in 1836. In the 1910s, Akron doubled in population, making it the nation's fastest-growing city.
A long history of rubber and tire manufacturing, carried on today by Goodyear Tire, gave Akron the nickname Rubber Capital of the World. It was once known as a center of airship development.[5][6] Today, its economy includes manufacturing, education, healthcare, and biomedical research; leading corporations include Gojo Industries, FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, and Charter Spectrum.
Notable historic events in Akron include the passage of the Akron School Law of 1847, which created the K–12 system; the popularization of the church architectural Akron Plan, the Akron Experiment into preventing goiters with iodized salt, the 1983 Supreme Court case City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health; and portions of the 2014 Gay Games.
A racially diverse city, it has seen noted racial relations speeches by Sojourner Truth in 1851 — the Ain't I A Woman? speech; W. E. B. Du Bois in 1920;[7] and President Bill Clinton in 1997.[8] In 1914, Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Akron.[7][9] Episodes of major civil unrest in Akron have included the riot of 1900, rubber strike of 1936, and the Wooster Avenue riots of 1968.
Despite the number of rubber workers decreasing by roughly half from 2000–07, Akron's research in polymers gained an international reputation.[34] It now centers the Polymer Valley which consist of 400 polymer-related companies, of which 94 were located in the city itself.[35] Research is focused at the University of Akron, which is home to the Goodyear Polymer Center and the National Polymer Innovation Center, and the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Because of its contributions to the Information Age, Newsweek listed Akron fifth of ten high-tech havens in 2001.[35] In 2008 City of Invention was added to the seal when the All-America City Award was received for the third time. Some events of the 2014 Gay Games used the city as a venue. In 2013, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company opened its new global headquarters on Innovation Way, further cementing the company's relationship with the city [3].
The city also continues to deal with the effects of air and soil pollution from its industrial past. In the southwestern part of the city, soil was contaminated and noxious PCB-laden fumes were put into the air by an electrical transformer deconstruction operation that existed from the 1930s to the 1960s. Cleanup of the site, designated as a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, began in 1987 and concluded in 2000. The area remains restricted with regular reviews of the site and its underground aquifer
There are numerous attractions and points of interest in the Akron area. Opened in 1922, The Akron Art Museum has a 20,000-square-foot building and a collection of art produced since 1850. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is the estate of F.A. Seiberling, founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The manor hosts various attractions and public events throughout the year. In the heart of downtown, the Akron Civic Theatre has provided the community with a venue for entertainment and live performances for over eighty years. Lock 3, a historic Ohio and Erie Canalway landmark, has been transformed into an entertainment amphitheater that hosts festivals, concerts, and community events throughout the year. The Akron Zoo is located just outside downtown, and was an initial gift of property from the city's founding family. In Highland Square, Akron hosts a convergence of art, music, and community annually called Art in the Square, a festival featuring local artists and musicians.[78]

With the city’s 7,500 residents paying the lowest property tax bills in Summit County, the community should be ideally positioned to thrive. But in our increasingly connected world, being close to two of the five largest cities in the state isn’t enough to entice young people and businesses to choose a Fairlawn ZIP code. Chapel Hill Mall in Akron, Ohio. Taken mid-week, mid day. Lots of stores closed and out of business in this mall. A sign of things to come in retail mall shopping? (includes Phantom 4 Pro, Aerial Drone Footage)
Chapel Hill Mall is a one-story, 860,000 sq ft (80,000 m2) enclosed mall located at 2000 Brittain Road in Akron, Ohio. Built by Richard (R.B.) Buchholzer and Forest City Enterprises, it opened on October 12, 1967. They continued to own the mall until 2004, when it was sold to the Chattanooga, Tennessee company CBL & Associates Properties, Inc., who owned it until 2014. The mall features more than 100 stores, with JCPenney as the sole anchor store. Macy's and Sears were former anchors until they closed in spring 2016 and spring 2017, respectively.
Chapel Hill Mall features one anchor store: JCPenney, which opened in 1966 before the mall proper.
A second store, Macy's, operated in an anchor that was originally occupied by local chain O'Neil's until 1989, May Co. until 1993, and Kaufmann's from 1993 to 2006. Macy's closed in 2016.
Sears was a third anchor of the mall which opened in 1967 at the same time as the mall and operated until 2017.
There used to be a multi-screen cinema at the mall as well. It opened in October 1966 as a two-screen theater, and eventually expanded to five screens. In 1987, General Cinemas (owner of the mall's cinema) opened an 8-screen multiplex just west of the mall, and in October 1996, Regal Cinemas opened their 10-screen theater immediately south of the mall. Less than two weeks later, the General Cinemas at the mall closed, and Old Navy took over the former theater until it closed in 2016. Woolworth also operated a store at the mall until 1997. It was later occupied by Gap which has since closed as well. In January 2017 Sears Holdings announced that the Chapel Hill store would be closing the following spring due to declining sales.
