Dolphin Cruise with Sailing Catamaran

The Catamarans are motorized and sailing vessels. The emphasis is on Sailing and all the romance and luxury associated with this fine way of travelling on the seas. Sun Sail Catamarans are silent, even when underway with their engines. The Catamarans offer a stable platform for viewing marine life and is ideal for elderly persons as embarking and disembarking is easy. Toilets on board with proper wash basins make the cruise ever more pleasant. These tours are excellent for viewing the marine life on the Walvis Bay Lagoon with a close encounter with seals, dolphins, birds, Whales, turtles, and Sun Fish. There are a number of tame seals that entertain the guests by jumping onboard.

Ep194. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our Transatlantic sailing voyage on the 50' (Xquisite X5) Catamaran. We are on Day 5-6 of the voyage. The weather has gone from calm and sunny to cold and foggy and we have to dodge running into a bunch of Fishing boat in the dense fog as we got close to Walvis Bay Namibia. Walvis Bay is not a pretty port as it is really industrial with lots of rusty Freighters but there seems to be a lot of wildlife around as we pulled into the harbour, we were invaded by Pelicans and Seals. It is something you will have to see to believe.

The VESTAS Sailrocket 2

If floating along in a boat propelled only by the gentle push of an ocean breeze is your idea of relaxing, then you might want to steer clear of the aptly named VESTAS Sailrocket 2. Designed and built from the ground up with a focus on speed, the boat and the VSR2 team have headed to Walvis Bay in Namibia with the aim of breaking the outright world speed sailing record for the short distance 500 meters (1,640 ft) of 55.65 knots (64 mph/103 km/h) set in October 2010 by American kite-surfer, Rob Douglas.

In 2008, the original VESTAS Sailrocket 1 boat hit speeds of over 52 knots in Walvis Bay, Namibia, and still holds the B class record but failed to clinch the outright record before flipping as it approached record-breaking speeds. The team aims to rectify this with the second generation Sailrocket that was designed to be significantly faster than its predecessor.

We learnt a lot with the first boat. The recent performance of the kite surfers vindicated our decision to build a new boat. I'm confident that Sailrocket 2 has the potential to take the record to new levels, says project leader, Paul Larsen.

Since the VSR2 team set its sights on the outright speed record nine years ago, the record has increased by nine knots but the VSR2 team thinks they now have the boat to set a new record.


The boat itself doesn't look like anything you're likely to see at your local marina. Its main fuselage and beam are angled at 20 degrees to the direction of travel so that the boat points directly into the direction of the apparent wind to reduce drag and increase stability at high speed. The team claims that the entire 12.2 m (40 ft) long and 12.2 m wide boat - including the rigging - has the equivalent aerodynamic drag of a 74 cm (29 in) diameter sphere.

The boat's wing has an overall area of 22 m2 and sports a number of new features to make it more efficient and stable. It is thinner than the wing used on the VSR1, weighs around 65-70 kg (143 - 154 lb) and is inclined at 30 degrees to match the inclination of the opposing foil on the other side of the boat. Since the boat only needs to sail in one direction, the wing is asymmetrical and set up for a starboard tack to suit the Walvis Bay location where the record-breaking attempt is being made.

To counteract the side-force of the wind and stop the boat slipping sideways, sail-powered boats such as VSR2 rely on fins or foils. However, at speeds of around 60 knots, traditional teardrop profile foils experience a phenomenon called cavitation, which occurs when a liquid is subjected to rapid changes in pressure resulting in the formation of cavities where the pressure is relatively low that can cause a lot of drag and loss of stability.

VESTAS Sailrocket 2 Outright world speed sailing record holder. (subject to WSSRC ratification)

On the 16/11/12 VESTAS Sailrocket 2 set out on it's 13th run for this session Walvis Bay Namibia. In moderate conditions with around 25 knots of wind average... VSR2 smashed the previous Outright world record by the biggest margin in the records history*. Paul larsen averaged 59.23 knots over the record 500 meter course and peaked at over 63 knots. The waters of Walvis Bay became speed sailing holy turf and the home of the Outright record for the first time. This represents the culmination of 10 years hard work. The team promise it still represents the beginning of this boats potential. Africa turned on a spectacular setting and the flamingoes are just the icing. You couldn't make that stuff up. Happy days.

It's an old sailors superstition that women are bad luck on a sail boat. That's not been our experience on Luckyfish and this episode shows why. Zaya and Tuya get stuck into jobs all over the boat and do it with a smile on their faces and a determination to get it done right.

Imagine what one week of cruising looks like, and you’ll never get two identical weeks. BUT— if we had to pick one, these 7 days are pretty typical of our cruising life. We spent some time at anchor, and one day at the dock. We enjoy some gorgeous sunshine, and run from a storm. We travel some days, others we stay put. We sail when the wind blows and motor when we it doesn’t. We get some work done, a workout in, and a little time at the beach. And we celebrate Kirk’s birthday — even though that doesn’t happen every week (which he’s certainly relieved about, though I would love more excuses to go out for ice cream!)

Get ready to check out one of the most unique places we have ever been! Who would of thought the Skeleton Coast would be covered with thousands of dolphins, seals and PENGUINS!? Definitely not us, so we sure were surprised when we pulled into our anchorage at Mercury Island in Spencer Bay. After making friends with Penguin Man (who has been living on an island of over ten thousand penguins for TWENTY YEARS), we paddle boarded with a massive seal colony, explored a beached shipwreck from the 40's, and spent the rest of the day sappin' brews in our hammocks on Delos.
