Osaka to Awaji Shima aboard Southern Cross.

After her long voyage in the Melbourne - Osaka race, it was an easy journey for Southern Cross from Hokko Marina Osaka, to Suntopia on Awaji Shima.

Looking ahead just a little and we see for those Sailing Japan that Kansai Yacht Club , KYC, has scheduled Round the Osaka Bay for 6th and 7th of June 2009. Sprindrift a Holby T-301 sloop and her crew decided to try out this night race course before the big day and were provided some incredible sailing for their trouble.

Friday 29th May we set off at 10:30 pm and pointed down Osaka bay towards Suntopia yacht club with the intention of sailing down to Sumoto and back to Nishinomiya non stop through the night. The straight line round trip distance is about 62 Nautical Miles. Race time limit is 21 hours.

We were blessed with a sultry Spring breeze of about 12 knots true off the Starboard aft quarter all the way down the bay. The Spinnaker was cracked and as anyone who has sailed under spinnaker at night well knows it is a glorious feeling. The breeze was stiff and steady, the temperature balmy, the friendship on board perfect. This is sailing at it's best.

About 3:00 am we rounded the imaginary mark (GPS simulation of actual race mark) and headed East across the bay looking for some sea breeze to push us home. No such luck on this and we had to creep most of the way over the bay to pick up a trickle of North East and started working up the bay. The breeze gradually died to almost zero as we worked up.

Sixteen hours after we headed out we finally picked up the first hint of a Southerly ocean breeze popped the spinnaker and ran home.
