5/16/2019 Ketchum Museum Highlights Indians
Tour to Examine Treatment of Native Americans in Wood River Valley
As the Community Library embarked on its current reimagining project, which has involved a two-year makeover of the library, library staff became cognizant of one glaring omission.
“We at Community Library recognize we have a dearth of materials on indigenous people here and we want to change that,” Library Director Jenny Emery Davidson told an audience that had come to hear a Shoshone historian talk about Idaho’s Bear River Massacre Tuesday night.
The library took its first step to address that by constructing an exhibit “Who Writes History? Frontier Voice, Native Realities” at its Regional History Museum in Ketchum’s Forest Service Park. And the exhibit, which examines the co-existence between Native Americans and non-natives in the Wood River Valley during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will be part of a free tour offered tonight by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
SVCA curators will start the tour at 5:30 p.m. at The Center at Fifth and Washington streets with a look at art in the current BIG IDEA exhibition “Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the Americas.” The exhibition offers alternative perspectives on the story of colonial history of the Americas, which has long been presented as a straightforward story of European conquest of indigenous cultures.
The tour will then proceed to the Regional History Museum for a look at that exhibition. Today’s Eye on Sun Valley video offers a peek at that exhibition.

Former Celebrity Couple Donate Theatre to Troupe in Idaho
Former Hollywood power couple Bruce Willis and Demi Moore have donated the Liberty Theatre in the town of Hailey, Idaho to a local theater company. According to the Idaho Statesman, the gift gives the theatre troupe, the Company of Fools, a secure, permanent space where the theatrical company has performed since 1996. Back in 2013, Company of Fools combined with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts to create the largest arts organization in the state. Willis and Moore, who are fans of the Wood River Valley region of Idaho, bought the historic movie house back in 1995 with the idea of transforming it into a live-performance space.

MLUXexchange.com - 480 Walnut Ave Sun Valley, Idaho AUCTION!!!
Located in the heart of downtown Ketchum within walking distance of all that Sun Valley has to offer is a rare and unique gated estate known as the Moose House - a moniker inspired by a prominently displayed life-size bronze moose by Michael Coleman. Occupying 2 major lots and measuring approximately 100000 square feet this one-of-a-kind luxury estate will never be able to be duplicated in downtown Ketchum due to current building regulations that eliminate main-floor residences. The Moose house shares an entire city block with one very quiet and unseen neighbor -the Ketchum library.
A buffer of mature landscaping that includes 30' to -70' pines enables the estate to be in the middle of all the action while enjoying quiet privacy on its gated grounds. The Moose House was constructed onsite using hand-hewn square-cut logs that measure up to 36 feet across. Carefully planned for comfortable casual living the u-shaped residence has been completely remodeled with liberal use of stone wood or wool carpet flooring; Venetian plaster on all walls and ceilings; a new copper roof; and all-new electrical water heat and air-conditioning systems.
Host to 4+ bedrooms and 5.5 baths the estate reveals expansive entertaining and living areas including a center courtyard with waterfall stream and pond; state-of-the-art entertainment features; luxurious guest suites; all-new commercial-caliber kitchen; and a master suite that fills the entire upper level. Beautiful and rare the Moose House is a world-class estate in a league of its very own.
Idaho Stories Exhibition & BIG IDEA project
What are Idaho’s stories? Who has told them? How have contemporary artists and writers interpreted those stories? This BIG IDEA project explores Idaho’s fascinating ties to literary history and also considers the state as a place that has long generated all kinds of stories. Key figures are the controversial poet Ezra Pound, born in Hailey; author and illustrator Mary Hallock Foote, who lived in Boise; self-taught artist James Castle, based in Idaho all his life; Ernest Hemingway, who visited the state many times before ending his life in Ketchum; and Marilynne Robinson’s novel Housekeeping, set in northern Idaho.
The visual arts exhibition features artwork by artists responding to Idaho’s landscapes and literature. Participating artists include: James Castle, Scott Fife, Mary Hallock Foote, Amanda Hamilton and Troy Passey

Crossing Cultures: Ethnicity in Contemporary America
December 7, 2012 - Feb 23, 2013
In 2000, the U.S. government made changes to the census form that illustrate significant shifts in the way the country thinks about race, culture and identity. For the first time, respondents could select multiple categories of race and/or ethnicity. While the idea of race still operates across our nation, the way we think about it has become more complicated. This multidisciplinary project looks at the role race, ethnicity and cultural heritage play in the 21st century— as factors that are not limiting, but are instead elements in larger constructions of self. How do we take signs, symbols and customs from our traditional cultures and translate them into our contemporary lives?
The exhibition features large-scale installations by artists Joe Feddersen and Bob Dix alongside work by Julie Chang and Ana Serrano. Each of the artists in the exhibition makes work that focuses on signs and symbols—symbols with personal, private meaning, with historical or traditional cultural significance, and with contemporary, popular relevance. They share a concern with the differences but also (and perhaps especially) the overlaps in symbols from their family backgrounds and those they find in contemporary culture. Their artwork considers the fluidity, humor and contrariness of identity in contemporary America, where factors like race, ethnicity and our families' cultural origins are always part of the way we identify ourselves, but offer up varying solutions in different situations.
