Rocky Mountain Fresh (Pt. 24) - The Athabasca Glacier
June 22, 2015 - The Athabasca Glacier, the only glacier in North America you can drive to and visit, hands-on; it is also the most visited. Courtesy of Brewster Tours, Sophie and I take a snow coach up to the base of the glacier (which, at one point in the past century, reached the highway, the Icefields Parkway). At about 2,200m/7357ft above sea level, surrounded by Mt. Athabasca and Mt. Andromeda (both to the south/left), and the epic Snow Dome on right right/north.
The Snow Dome, at 3,456m/11,339ft high, is the hydrological apex of North America, acting as a triple continental divide; water from the Snow Dome can find itself emptying into either the Pacific, Atlantic, or Arctic Oceans.
The Athabasca Glacier is located just a few kilometres outside of Banff National Park; rather, it is in Jasper National Park.
The Canadian near Abbotsford (30AUG2010)
Via Rail's The Canadian 6441, 6453, 6418 and 24 shiny passenger cars near Abbotsford British Columbia. The transcontinental passenger train was actually early so we missed it in Chilliwack and barely caught it in Abbotsford -- there wasn't even time to mount the tripod.
