Sunbury-on-Thames is a town in Surrey, England, 16 miles from Charing Cross. Sunbury railway station is on a branch line from London Waterloo and the town is also on the M3 motorway. Lower Sunbury contains most of the town's parks, pubs and listed buildings and is home to Kempton Park Racecourse, served by its own railway station. Offices and hotels form part of its labour-importing economy. Retail buildings are at Sunbury Cross and in four parades. By Sunbury Park is a public walled garden which has a large millennium tapestry in its art gallery/café. Most of Sunbury's riverside is privately owned, including Wheatley's Ait and Sunbury Court Island.
On the outskirts of London, Sunbury is surrounded by other suburban towns, with Feltham to the north, Hampton to the east, Ashford to the northwest, and Walton-on-Thames to the south. Sunbury is bordered by the River Thames to the south and green buffer zones preventing merger with Shepperton and the outer parts of London.
Sunbury was in the Middlesex Domesday map in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Suneberie. Its Domesday assets were: 7 hides. It had 5 ploughs, meadow for 6 ploughs, cattle pasture. It had about 22 households, including one priest and have included the manor of Kempton, Kynaston, Chenneston, Kenton or Kenyngton, listed separately. The manor rendered £6 per year to its feudal system overlords. That of Kempton rendered £4.
Sunbury Court in Lower Sunbury (b.1723) is the home of the high council of the Salvation Army since 1925. Sunbury has the main home, Hawke House, of Admiral Hawke who blockaded Rochefort in 1757 and in 1758 he directed the blockade of Brest for six months. Its three parts are Georgian buildings with small gardens to front and rear. The vast bulk of the land behind and across the road belonging to the house was re-planned in stages in the mid 20th century as private detached homes with gardens.

Sunbury Court Island
Sunbury Court Island is a long pedestrianised residential island of houses and bungalows in the River Thames in England on the 'Sunbury and Hampton' or 'Molesey' reach, above Molesey Lock in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, England.
The island is linked to the eastern part of the developed riverside of Sunbury on the left, 'Middlesex', bank of the river. The island is pedestrianised and residential comprising 25 houses and bungalows in typically garden or patio plots with equal or smaller footprint to those homes. It is connected to a narrow point between homes on the bank by a flat iron footbridge with criss-crossed decorative railings surmounted by an ornamental Italianate square tower, pictured right.
From the bridge entrance the non-listed south wall, rather than railings, and entrance drive of Sunbury Court. Also visible are the higher part of the neo-classical conference centre in a grand former home, Sunbury Court, which is an international headquarters of the Salvation Army movement, Grade II* listed and dates to 1723 with later improvements and outbuildings, mainly of the present century. Rivermead Island, a park, is approximately 20 metres upstream. Sunbury Cricket Club is approximately 300 metres downstream set away from the river.
The buildings date to summer homes of the early 20th century, before which the island was a long rural meadow. The earlier name for the island was 'Hayes Ait'.
International headline-reported flooding of non-tidal stretches of the Thames took place during the 2013–2014 United Kingdom winter floods, forming its greatest single area of economic impact. Flooding reached waist depth across the island path on 7 January 2014 when a small number of residents were rescued by a large team of local emergency services called to the island's help. By 8 February 2014, approximately half of homes had been chosen to be evacuated by Fire and Rescue Services.

The 40 Sunbury Road Garden at RHS Chelsea 2017
The industry showcase exhibit; 40 Sunbury Road at RHS Chelsea Flower Show features five new plant launches as well as our very own
The garden, put together by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), is run in conjunction with Peter Seabrook and The Sun and is a celebration of Seabrook's 40 years working at the newspaper.
APL member Bowood Landscapes has helped to build the garden, which features ideas and inspiration from a typical modest suburban back garden, and celebrates and promotes the the garden and landscape industry in the UK.
HTA operations director Martin Simmons said: 40 Sunbury Road is a great collaboration which will showcase the UK horticulture industry at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We hope that members maximise the opportunity provided by the week long TV coverage and wider media platform that the show provides.
The 16m x 5m plot in the Great Marquee features plants and sundries from growers and suppliers all of which are available nationwide in UK garden centres.
Sunbury Lunatic Asylum - Mental Hospital - Caloola
As part of my Cultural Heritage studies and my focus on Victorian asylums, I visited Caloola - Sunbury Asylum. Of all the Victoria asylums, I've always had oxymoron feelings of the site.
My first experience was reading about its earliest beginnings as Sunbury Slaughterhouse (link below) but I also think it is ‘prettier’ than the other asylums. Thanks to Julie – operator of Sunbury Historical Tours - I have learnt that ‘pretty’ couldn’t be further from the truth. I came away extremely impressed by the years of dedicated research Julie has conducted in all areas of the sites history and heritage and thank her for her work.

Caloola, Sunbury consists of buildings set in extensive grounds with plantings of mature trees and remnant farmland. Caloola commenced in 1864 as an Industrial School, was redeveloped in 1879 as a Lunatic Asylum, substantially enlarged in the period 1891 to 1914 and was maintained in use as a psychiatric hospital (1879-1968) and later a training centre for the intellectually disabled (1962-1992). Part of the site became a Victoria University campus from 1994 to 2011 and the remainder is in use by the Department of Education.
Caloola is historically significant for the former Industrial School buildings constructed mainly from 1865-66. The school operated from 1865 to 1879 as the first purpose-built Industrial School in Victoria. The buildings at Sunbury are demonstrative of the harsh conditions which characterised such schools for neglected or delinquent children. The former Industrial School hospital (1865) is amongst the earliest hospital buildings surviving in the state.
Caloola is architecturally significant as a former lunatic asylum, one of several surviving in the state. It demonstrates typical characteristics such as formal planning, use of sunken walls (ha ha walls), airing courts and a diverse range of building types to cater for the patient and staff population. They gain their architectural significance from the unity of materials, overall cohesiveness of design, consistent and distinctive detailing (especially in the unusual use of buttresses and steep roofs in the former hospital wards), impressive site planning and spacious setting.
The Caloola complex is of aesthetic significance for the quality and range of its architecture and garden elements, consistent use of basalt, red brick and terra cotta tiles, its consistency of architectural styles and materials within the two major building phases, for its landscape planning and plantings and for its prominent siting on the hill with views to and from the site.
Caloola is of social significance especially to past patients and their families as a reminder of past practices in mental health care.
The Caloola site is on the traditional land of the Wurundjeri people.

Chelsea Flower Show 2017 | Meeting With Friends // VLOG
Being a blogger, or digital influence (which seems to now be the buzz phrase) has brought so much into my life. Don't get me wrong, it's damn hard graft - but I sometimes get to experience the most amazing things and call it 'work'.
Take last Friday for instance which found me, along with all the ladies from The Over 40 Collective, being wined, dined and generally spoiled rotten courtesy of MADELEINE - (a brand that I will be talking more about in my outfit post on Monday).
The mini London break and visit to The Chelsea Flower Show 2017, which was organised by Bright Light PR, saw us being ensconced for the night in a rather nice hotel, whisked off to the flower show, fed and watered (well, champagned) in an Jardin Blanc, an exclusive members' only area where the menu was created by Raymond Blanc no less.
Follow along as I try not to fall in any flower displays ????
