Jan 16, 2013 PUDUCHERRY: No taming of bulls, no huffing and panting, no war cries, no goring to death of humans and no prizes for the winners. Yet hundreds of people, including a large number of foreigners, thronged the Kuilapalayam village near Auroville, on Tuesday morning, to watch the 'Manju Virattu' was held as part of the Pongal celebrations.
Considered to be a type of bull racing in this part of the region, the start of festivities was marked by the arrival of the bulls, cows and calfs to the starting point, the entrance to the village, with the owners and others guiding them from 10 am onwards.
The bovines were all decorated with bananas, garlands, vermillion marks on their heads and different colours sprinkled all over their bodies. A couple of animals sported small portraits of superstar Rajanikanth, actor kamal, actor ajith and actor Vijay.
The animals, numbering 50, were lined up in different rows and then the village deity Pavadarayan, was taken around them.
Just before the race, the bananas decorating the foreheads of the animals were thrown to the crowds and in turn the enthusiastic crowd threw the bananas back at the owners of the bulls.
At the sound of three fire cracker shots, the bulls and cows accompanied by their owners and motivated by the cheers of the crowd, raced down the road to the interior of the village.
It was a different experience for those who watched the Manju Virattu. People, including foreigners from the nearby Auroville, gathered in good numbers at the entrance of Kuilapalayam village.

Highlights of some of the many events that took place in the two-days festival: from the inauguration, to the Odissi and Bharat Natyam dance presentations, to the traditional sports activities, the stalls of local crafts and arts, the paintings, the kolam competition, to the great sitar and orchestra concert, to the final collective OM in circle around the bonfire. All examples of the flourishing culture of the bio-region of Auroville, spanning from the international township that hosts residents from 52 different nations, to the French-influenced Puducherry, to the historical culture of Tamil Nadu.
The Festival took place on April 15 and 16, 2017, on the border of the Alankuppam lake, on Auroville land where soon shall start the construction of the Mohanam Institute for the bio-region heritage.
Stone Carving Workshop, Pondicherry
INTACH in collaboration with Dept. of Art & Culture, Govt. of Pondicherry organized a Design development workshop for the stone carving artisans of Tamilnadu that helped them to learn a new vocabulary of converting a river stone/pebble into an art piece.
Mr. Murthy, a national awarded stone artist, headed this workshop and helped the participants to upgrade their skills. This workshop was conducted in a public area, Gandhi Thidal plaza on beach road, to get a direct reaction on the designs and a great success was achieved by catching a huge crowd and highly appreciated by 100’s of visitors every day of the workshop.

Phonemic Intelligence Pondicherry Project
Tripura Foundation is pleased to share the launch of our Phonemic Intelligence Pilot Project in Pondicherry. The Phonemic Intelligence (PI) Program trains students in intelligence enhancing exercises in almost a thousand schools and 101 HoPE Centers across India.
Pondicherry is the largest Union territory of Southern India with Tamil as its main language.
Pondicherry is the largest French Colony in India with strong influences from the French seen in its French style Rues and Boulevards.
The Phonemic Intelligence Pilot project in Pondicherry officially commenced on June 13th, 2018 at Government Primary School, Pillayarkuppam village.
The primary school students were first given psychometric tests as the preliminary step before learning the PI core technique.
In the next step, the students were divided into 3 different groups, and training in the PI technique was delivered by the chief trainer Mr.Vinod Kumar.
Headmaster, teachers, and students have reported multifold benefits of the PI techniques- such as enhanced academic performance, balanced emotional intelligence, stress reduction, and higher self-confidence.
Tripura Foundation will provide PI training to over 2,000 students in the government schools of Pondicherry to help these children succeed in their academic studies and personal lives.
It only costs $9 to support one child for a year of Phonemic Intelligence Program training. We appreciate your ongoing support to help us bring our PI school program to uplift many more children in India.
