MALTA (2019) MARSAXLOKK WALKING TOUR - Market and Fishing Boats
Marsaxlokk is a small, fishing village on the South East coast of Malta. It's famous for its picturesque harbour, brightly painted fishing boats known as luzzu and kajjik (with their characteristic painted eyes on the prow - 'the Eye of Osiris',) and the Marsaxlokk Market. This is a major fish market that takes place on Sundays - the tourist market taking place the rest of the week.
Filmed on a Sunday, we'll see part of the fish market as well as some of the most noted restaurants along the way.
We begin our walk on a jetty at the end of Xatt is-Sajjieda, the road that stretches along the seafront. The bright luzzu and kajjik boats bob in the harbour, their characteristic blue, red, yellow and green paintwork reflected in the water. It's immediately obvious why Marsaxlokk is one of the best day trips from Valletta, and leads the top 10 things to do in Malta if you're visiting.
There's so many places to eat in Marsaxlokk, many with gorgeous views over the harbour - from Costa Coffee to Harbour Lights, Roots Restaurant, La Nostra Padrona Restaurant, Pisces Restaurant Marsaxlokk and Cafe De Paris - naming just a few.
It's a perfect place to sit out and people watch - but make sure to book if you're visiting on a Sunday.
We continue our walk by following Triq Il Wilga, passing the rated Tartarun restaurant and Terrone to follow the line of boats out to the end of the quay.

MARSAXLOKK - THE FISHING VILLAGE
Marsaxlokk Bay is Malta's second largest natural harbour. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the Luzzus, with the mythical eye painted on their prows.
The village is the Islands' main fishing harbour; its Sunday fish market a fascinating insight into local life and a traditional industry. The stalls brim with the night's catch - fish of all shapes, colours and sizes. The village itself has many good fish restaurants. Marsaxlokk derives its name from the Arabic word marsa, meaning harbour, and Maltese for the south-easterly Mediterranean wind, the Xlokk (Sirocco in Italian). Marsaxlokk, with its sheltered habour, was an easy landing place for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. It was here that the Ottoman Turks landed for an attack which ended in the Great Siege of 1565. Napoleon's army landed here in 1798; and in recent times, the harbour was the scene of the Bush-Gorbachev Summit,1989.
The headland to the left of the Bay is Delimara Point. It has two attractive, secluded rocky inlets suitable for swimming: Peter's Pool; and the furthermost part of the headland. Fort Delimara, on the west of the peninsula, was built by the British in 1881 to guard the entrance to Marsaxlokk Bay.

Marsaxlokk - Life in a Maltese Fishing Village
Marsaxlokk is a typical Fishing Village in the Mediterranean island of Malta. On Sunday morning, a huge street market of about 1 km is set up along the shore of this beautiful place. No doubt that this is the best place to buy fresh fish from the stalls and the fishmongers will surely help you decide. This is what really makes this village a fishing village.
But here you will find everything you can imagine: from fresh fruit and vegitables to bags, footwear, clothing and more. Come and taste the Maltese Nougat (Qubbajt) and other Maltese Confectionery such as the Pastini tal-lewz, the Ħelwa tat-Tork and other Maltese traditional food such as the Żebbug mimli, Tadam imqadded, Ġardiniera, Ġbejniet tal-bzar, Kappar etc. Buy a jar of the mostly sought Maltese honey (Għasel ta' Malta) and admire the beautiful craft of the Maltese traditional Lace (il-Bizzilla).
FISH MARKET - Marsaxlokk - Malta (Mercado de Pescado en Marsaxlokk Malta) 2020
Fish Market Marsaxlokk Malta

Scenes from Marsaxlokk, Malta
Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village located in the south-eastern part of Malta. The village’s name comes from marsa, which means port and xlokk, which is the local name for south east. The word is related to the name for the dry sirocco wind that blows from the Sahara, comparable to the equivalent Catalan word, xaloc. The village is known for the Marsaxlokk Market, a large market which takes place around the whole village on Sundays and tourist market all days during the week. The inhabitants of the village are called the Xlukkajri and are historically fishermen.
Marsaxlokk is about 40 minutes from Valletta by public bus No. 81 or No. 85. The village is approached via a long, narrow, straight, road with vineyards on both sides, or along the coast from Birzebbuga if traveling on the No. 85. The bay is at the south-east end of the island and is memorable for the many colourful, traditional fishing boats called luzzu . The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from danger. Tourists visit the town for the picturesque photo opportunities of the bay filled with colourful fishing boats, plethora of seafood restaurants and the very busy Sunday market that sells everything from fish, fruit and vegetables, delicatessen goods and groceries, to souvenirs, clothing and footwear. Another attraction is the nearby, spectacular, Saint Peters Pool. This is a swimming area with crystal clear, deep blue water behind the Delamara Power Station. It is not advisable to visit when the wind is from the South or East however, as the water can become cloudy and sometimes, rough.

Marsaxlokk Fish Market Malta
Marsaxlokk is known as the fishing village where you eat the best seafood in Malta
It represents an important point in the history of Malta and in the way in which its progress was taking shape.
The name comes from the union of two Maltese words that are: marsa (port) and xlokk (sirocco wind) due to the important presence that this African wind had in this corner. Its excellent location, in the middle of the Mediterranean, helped the site to gain popularity. It was one of the first settlements on the island, hence the famous picturesque gondolas used for fishing, known as Luzzu. They are boats that are still used for the fishing of the 'lampuki', the most consumed Mediterranean fish in Malta, present in several traditional meals
Every Sunday morning, Marsaxlokk becomes Malta's fish market

We headed to Marcia Slak, south of Malta. A fishing village that represents Malta. Squid-like weather vane is remarkable. The colorful colored boats are also eye-catching. Unusually, there is snow on the bow. It is a tradition that originated in Egypt. To pray for good luck. Maltese Traditional Boats Maltese boats have mostly the shape of their eyes. The traditional boat name is Rutz. The real thing of Marcia Sluck is this traditional market. I sell everything without food, shoes and clothes, and this is the best specialty product. It is fresh seafood caught in the Maltese sea area. A lot of people are looking for the price because it is affordable. The fish shop sells only on Sundays. It is a market every Sunday, and we come here every Sunday. The reason I come here often is because I can get fresh fish and vegetables. I sold it for 15 years. My husband is a fisherman and I'm doing this job. He always seemed to be enjoying his work. I do not like it, but I have to. Because my husband is a fisherman. It's a lot of stress. It is too hard. I pray for happiness for a woman who lives hard without expressing any difficulty. While slowly turning around the market, grandfather and young granddaughter prepare for business on one side of the market. My granddaughter showed me things, and my grandfather did not seem to have anything to do with it. It will be hard to help the grandfather from the market in the morning at the age when you should play in the midst. Still, the child does not give in. We sell radishes, potatoes, tomatoes and home made wines, honey, pickled onions, dried tomatoes and olives. And I sell other agricultural products like syrup and honey made from carrot. These are all made at home. Everyone is organic. At that time, the grandfather, who sells the harvested crops little by little, says that the child helps with the chores. This time I'm showing the price list, but I'm a bit confused. I hide behind my box, and my grandfather hides behind. The child is cute. Even though I made a mistake in front of me, the child seems to be quite obsolete. I come here every Sunday to help my grandfather. And it's fun.
