West Butte - Sweetgrass Hills, Montana
2019-05-20 - West Butte
The West Butte area of the Sweetgrass Hills contains the highest point of the 3 main buttes (6983') and is the most accessible as it is only a short drive from the I-15 on a well-traveled gravel-dirt road. The trail head and the bulk of West Butte itself is on public land although the hills just to the north and the grassland around the Butte is privately owned.
The Sweetgrass Hills are a type of geological feature called a laccolith, where magma deep beneath the Earth's surface is forced up and then cool, leaving dome shaped hills / mountains behind. They are visible from some distance as they stand above flat prairie.
They are held sacred to many First Nations (Blackfoot: kátoyissiksi) and were used for religious purposes (e.g., vision quests) and practical purposes (e.g., observing bison migration, rival nations) for centuries.
I hiked the West Butte once before (with my son) in 2011. On that day we just went straight up from the trail head and, after grunting and groaning all the way to the top, took an easier route on the descent and was surprised by how beautiful the little valleys and hills were to the north of the main hill. For that reason on this hike I wanted to reverse that loop and thus we took the slightly longer but more scenic ascent line.

Toys for the North Deer Lake First Nation - Dec 17, 2018
THUNDER BAY – Sioux Lookout – Deer Lake – Poplar Hill – Departing in cool but sunny conditions, along with Santa Claus, the RCMP, Gardewine and North Star Air, a great crew of excited people headed north for the 2018 annual Toys for the North.
The destination communities this year were Deer Lake and Poplar Hill.
The day started early, and it was wheels up in Thunder Bay just after 8:00 am. The journey first headed to Red Lake to top up on fuel due to some strong headwinds.
From Red Lake it was a short half hour into Deer Lake where the toys were off loaded from a North Star Air Caravan by RCMP, Nishnawbe Aski Police, community volunteers and NSA and Gardewine helpers.
At Deer Lake the toys made it to the local television station where there was a broadcast live into the homes across the community so Elders could watch.
Well over 100 plus children and youth came out in waves to meet Santa and share some Christmas time happiness with the team.
In Poplar Hill First Nation, the community came out for a feast, and some holiday fellowship at the community school.
The journey from CFB Trenton, on to Thunder Bay and then to the destination communities resulted in a huge harvest of smiles.
The toys, which came in on a Canadian Forces C133 Hercules last week left Thunder Bay after being sorted at the Thunder Bay Gardewine depot earlier in the week to arrive in Deer Lake First Nation and Poplar Hill First Nation.
Taking time out of what is a very busy schedule, Santa Claus decided to get a bit of an early start coming along on the journey.
Families in the northern communities of Deer Lake First Nation and Poplar Lake First Nation expressed appreciation for toys.
Mallard Larkins - St. Joe National Forest, Idaho
We were trying to decide where to go and finally settled on the Mallard Larkins Pioneer Area in North Idaho. We did a trip here 3 years ago and the place blew my mind. While not being far from civilization when you look at a map, being there is another story. As the crow flies the trailhead is maybe 40 miles from where I live. To get there though, takes about 3 hours.
The stats for this trip would put this in the category of a moderate hike for me. Less than 10 miles per day, less than 2000' gain per day. Somehow hiking here feels a lot tougher than that.
From the trailhead we dropped steeply into Sawtooth Creek then started working our way up the other side. We departed from the Northbound Creek trail, taking the Martin Creek trail instead. The trail from the creek to the junction with Skyland Lake was brushy, but not too bad.
We camped our first night at Skyland Lake. The main campsite there is nice and large and we had no problem finding trees for all of us (5 hammocks) to hang from.
We set out the next morning up the Martin Creek trail looking to get up to the Heart Pass trail. We lost the trail shortly out of camp. We bushwhacked up the hill and stumbled in to it again. It was a brushy hike up to the ridge, but we managed to get up there and only lost the trail a couple times.
From there was ridge walked the Heart Pass trail over to the Heart Lake cutoff and down to the lake. Though it was a ridge walk, there was still plenty of climbing to get there.
The next morning the mosquitos had massed and executed a full assault on our camp. It was some of the worst I've seen. We packed up and got out of there as quickly as we could.
We hiked back up to the Heart Pass trail and backtracked our route from the day before. We passed the Martin Creek Junction where we had come up the day before and continued on to the Mallard Peak Lookout. The views from the lookout were spectacular! I love getting to check out old lookouts, the Mallard Peak lookout dates back to the 1930's.
From the lookout we continued on to Fawn Lake which might've been the most scenic of them all.
The next day we were hiking out. We started off by losing the trail right away. After some searching and bushwhacking we found it again. It seemed like a repeat of hiking out of Skyland Lake, except it seemed like this brush was fighting back!
Eventually we made it down to the Northbound Creek trail. We cameled up at Sawtooth Creek and made the hike back up to the saddle to complete our trip.

There's so much more to the history of Canada's Chinatowns and the country's Chinese Canadian heritage—do not stop with us. Our aim is to make our channel a gateway drug. A great starting point, which proved an invaluable resource for us, is Simon Fraser University's community-based research initiative 'From C to C: Chinese Canadian Stories of Immigration':
This episode doesn't even break the surface of what is a deep well of stories, historical figures, and pivotal events through which Chinese immigration shaped the course of the country's history. In our eyes, we no longer think of the colonization of Canada through the lens of two nations interacting with the Indigenous, but three. So next time you step through a paifang or Chinese arch in your town or city, or see a Chinese restaurant or street sign, we hope you stop and consider the historical weight behind them.
We've barely touched on the construction of the railroad, we haven't even mentioned the riots in Vancouver, we haven't focused on the Chinese diaspora across the nation, nor have we even uttered a word about Chinese Canadian cuisine—down the road, there's a whole series of episodes to make if the channel survives.
Notes:
The image we included as a depiction of Lee Chong (his name is spelled differently in many different sources—the frontrunners being Lee Chong and Lee Chang) is only that: a representation. One of the roadblocks to this episode was the fact the era of Chinese Canadian history from 1858 to 1900 is sparsely documented (or too expensive for us to license). Lee Chong would/should be considered a Founding Father of Victoria, but there is no visual evidence for him—only written documentation, newspaper ads, and signage—and we think that puts sharing his story at a disadvantage. We want to bring history to life so viewers are able to picture/identify with historical figures regardless of the country's shoddily documented past, so when there is no visual record of a historical heavyweight like Lee Chong we supplement their presence with edited, historically accurate portraits of other people. To us, it's the same thing as modern re-enactments with actors—if not more accurate. For Lee Chong, we found a photo of a late 19th Century, Southern Chinese, gentleman—a business magnate. His wife? Well, the Canadian Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macao referred to the image we used as being a portrait of Mrs. Kwong Lee (that's the only way she's ever referred to)—we suspect it was a portrait of a different Chinese Canadian woman that has been run through a rumour mill, but it remains historically accurate in terms of location and time period. Our other option was to have black silhouettes or omit their characters entirely—we hope you agree it was worth it to do it this way.
If other arches were built between 1912 and 1981, we could not find them. We referred to a research exhibit (which included a focus on the arches) put together by the University of Victoria that used to be available to the public a few years ago, but has since been made private, solely for the eyes of students of the university (which is pretty lame).
Addendum (there's much more than this):
The Chinook Language (or Jargon). We initially had a section in the episode dedicated to outlining how Chinese immigrants were able to build successful businesses in a land of many different alien languages . The tool they used to communicate was a jargon developed solely in the Pacific Northwest for the purposes of trading and communicating between the plethora of different nationals who flooded there during the gold rush(es). Due to the episode's length, and the fact the Chinook language deserves its very own episode, we had to cut it.
The Bachelor Society of Chinese Canadians up to World War II. In previous cuts, we had a section detailing some of the ramifications of the Head Tax Bill (a bill that required all Chinese immigrants to pay hundreds of dollars to enter the country—in modern times, tens of thousands). We had to cut it to keep the pace moving, but the focus was on the fact that the vast majority of Chinese immigrants were men—98% or so. Chinese women were either married or sex workers, and the Head Tax made it impossible to bring families across the ocean. It's a story for another episode focused on Vancouver and Alberta.
If you're ever in Victoria's Chinatown, check out the totally-not-a-tourist-trap Fan Tan Cafe because the food there is great.
Day hike to the Black Rock Mountain look-out
Dramatically located against the vertical escarpment of the Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, Black Rock Lookout is a 10’x 10’ ground house constructed by the Canadian Forest Service in the late 1920s and staffed by provincial rangers. Always difficult to service -- it was a three-day trip by packhorse to bring in supplies -- the lookout was abandoned in the 1950s when part of the trail fell away. In 1995 the “Friends of the Eastern Slope” reshingled the cabin and a Junior Forest Ranger crew reconstructed the trail
Trailhead: Follow Crowchild Trail out of the city through Cochrane to the junction with Highway 40 Forestry Trunk Road (Just past the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant). Follow the Trunk Road to the the Bar-Cee Ranch 25.4 km north of Highway 1A (The real Bar-Cee not the dude ranch). From here turn west onto the Ghost River Road (AKA TransAlta Road) and follow this another 15.6 km to the campground. Park here. If you have a 4x4 you can make it down the steep hill and cross the Ghost river a few times. This will cut 5km from your trek.
The last 3.5 km of this hike are straight-up, with an elevation gain of 834 m. It's worth it.

Hiking the Southhead Lighthouse Trail in Lark Harbour, Newfoundland
This 3.5 km (1 way) trail is another great trail that has been built by the Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee. Virtual Hike: Toe of Athabasca Glacier, Icefields Parkway, Jasper, Canada
This is a hike to a glacier which is just off the Icefields Parkway road, in Jasper National Park, (above Banff National Park), in Alberta Canada. It was amazing to actually stand on a glacier. I was surprised that it (at least on this day) wasn't slippery, and the ice contained bits of rock so much so that you could only make out a relatively small amount of ice between the tiny rock particles.
