Sungai Lembing, 林明山 - Pahang
Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town in Kuantan District, Pahang, Malaysia. Lembing is Malay for spear, and sungai means river. Per local legend, the local ruler saw a vision of a spear in the nearby river and thus named his town after this vision.
Until the 1860s, Sungai Lembing was a major producer of underground tin.[1] Sungai Lembing town developed in the 1880s when the British set up the tin mining industry, although the history of mining in this area extends much further back. From 1891, the Pahang Consolidated Company Limited, (PCCL), which was under British control, had a 120 -year lease to mine the area. PCCL managed the mine from 1906 until its liquidation in 1986 when world tin prices collapsed.
The pit mines were closed in 1986 due to high operational costs and low yields, but during their heyday they were among the largest and deepest in the world. The total tunnel length is 322 km, with a depth of between 610 m and 700 m. A museum highlighting the tin mining industry was opened in 2003. The museum is housed in an old bungalow once used by the mine manager. The museum houses a collection of mining artifarts.
Today the town of Sg Lembing is in decline although it was once the richest town in Pahang, known as El Dorado of the East. In the 1940s about 1400 people worked in the mine. Today many of the wooden shoplots are closed and people are moving away. The town straddles the river, and the main street on the right bank is split by an avenue of majestic trees. At the end, an old wooden building overlooks the padang where games of cricket and other social activities were held.

VLOG530 TIN MINE HERITAGE AT SUNGAI LEMBING, PAHANG MALAYSIA
Our vlog explores the old legend Tin Ore Mines that is full of historic stories and mesmerizing view. It was an experience of a lifetime witnessing the hidden stories of Lombong Bijih Timah Sungai Lembing. Sungai Lembing is such a beautiful small town with a mesmerizing view. The locals are so friendly and the environment is so soothing. Our trips took for 3 days 2 night. We gain a lot of sweet memories.
When people think about museum, we might think of a place where we are not allowed to touch or play with the artefacts. This place, however, is different. We love the existence of an interactive medium. In a medium-size area, we could experience riding a train that was used by the miner, enter the mine tunnel, get the damp vibe, play with the pulley and try to use a cart that's moved my humans' power.
The Mine has exceptional history from the 1880s
to approx 1986 and is the second worlds deepest a longest tin mine. The first is in Bolivia. This was the site of one of the biggest and most productive mines in Malaysia. The underground mines are deep and long. A small portion of the mine is open to visitors. There are useful information boards along the mine tunnels and when it’s not too crowded, the guides stationed along the tunnels will be more than happy to talk to you. Turns out quite a few of them are descended from miners who had worked in the mine, so their knowledge and insights are fascinating.
This is a very interesting place to visit, probably the only one of its kind in Malaysia. A small train takes you 100m into the tunnel then you walk 300m further in on your own. This is the kind of place they should be compulsory for kids (and some adults) to visit. It is so rich in history and so educational. We still can't believe how people could possibly work in such conditions. This was definitely a trip to remember.
We visited this historical site on 31st Oct 2019 until 2nd Nov 2019. We start our journey at Terminal Bas Bersepadu Kuala Lumpur and took a bus from there to Kuantan Pahang. It cost us RM24 per trip. For your information, the bus only stops at Terminal Kuantan where we have to take another Rapid bus to reach Sg Lembing which cost us RM4 only! Very affordable! The journey took about 4 hours so definitely, you’ll be tired during the journey, so we chose Time Capsule Retreat as our accommodation for 3 days 2 nights for RM300+ only! Here visitors can find nature-based accommodations like homestays, small resorts and B&B which will give an unusual experience which you cannot get in the urban life.

A half day trip to Sungai Lembing 林明半日游, we visited the Local Food Court, Crystal House, the Lembing River, Hanging Bridges and Sungai Lembing Museum.
Malaysia In a Minute - Sungai Lembing
Rarely included in guidebooks is the old tin-mining town of Sungai Lembing, only one hour by bus from Kuantan (see separate clip). Although well past its glory days, the town is a popular excursion for locals, especially on Sundays, and boasts an excellent museum, trails for walking and bicycling, and several guesthouses.
This is part of a series of one-minute film clips to help tourists answer a fundamental question: do I want go here or do this? Text can be boring and misleading, while photos can be altered and selective. The best option is to watch a film clip that's short and easy to download.
