Sungkyunkwan University (also known as SKKU or Seongdae) was founded in 1938, it’s the oldest national educational institution of higher learning during the Joseon Dynasty. Today, the university has two campuses: the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul, and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. In addition to being Korea’s first fully English-taught Global MBA program, which has gained tremendous international recognition. SKKU also has one of the best medical schools in South Korea, which is affiliated with the world-famous Samsung Medical Center. Samsung partnered with SKKU in the period of 1965-1977 and took up its partnership in 1996. Recent years have seen a trend of SKKU rising in university rankings, consistently placing in the top 5 nationally.
Jongyeonggak was built in 1475 as the first library in Korea. All the books housed in the library were exclusively Confucian books. During the Japanese occupation, most of the books were taken to the library of Gyeongseong Imperial University (the predecessor of Seoul National University), and remaining books were moved to the Central Library of the University after the completion of the new campus in 1953.
The largest building on the old campus is Daeseongjeon, it was originally built in 1398 but was burned down during the invasion of 1592 and was rebuilt in 1602. This is where the memorial tablets of Confucius and his followers are enshrined. The shrine is an excellent example of the architecture of the time. There are also many old traditional Korean buildings on the Seoul campus. These include Munmyo (Confucian Shrine) and Myeongnyundang (the main lecture hall). The 600th Anniversary Building houses a museum containing Confucian artifacts from the Joseon Dynasty.
The Korean Language Department run by Sungkyunkwan University offers a 1 day Korean Language Experience Program and a Korean language-teaching course. Through these programs, foreigners in Korea can learn the language and meet people from other countries.
Almost every weekend, the campus bustles with guests at traditional wedding ceremonies that are held in the grounds of the hall just inside the main gate. They mingle with the tourists, who stand in awe of the beauty of the traditional architecture. Another attraction is the two giant ginkgo trees planted in 1519. Ginkgo trees have a symbolic meaning in Confucianism because Confucius is said to have loved reading, pondering, and teaching his disciples under a Ginkgo tree.

Successful without their own brands, Golden days of OEMs/ODMs
Companies that manufacture and supply products to other companies without having their own brands, or so-called original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and original design manufacturers (ODM) are having their second golden days. Even without their own famous brands, they are supplying more to global players on the back of strong production capacity. Some of them are reporting 1 trillion won in sales or even introducing their own brands. The companies are successful nameless players in various sectors, ranging from cosmetics and fashion to IT and home appliances. We will explore the current state of OEMs/ODMs and the problems they are facing.

Korea′s manufacturing sandwiched between China and Japan, Any breakthroughs?
Interviewee: Professor KIM Yong-june, Graduate School of Business, Sungkyunkwan University /President of Korean Academy of International Business
The future of Korea′s manufacturers looks increasingly uncertain. Chinese rivals are fiercely chasing Korean manufacturers, while in Japan, with the state and private sector joining hands, companies are targeting global markets with a slogan Japan is back. However, Korean firms, which were seen as strong manufacturing players in the past, are hardly moving forward. While Samsung Electronics has shown a poor performance in its flagship product smartphones, Chinese mobile phone makers including Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi have been growing sharply helped by their price competitiveness. We will talk about the current state of Korea′s manufacturing industry and if there are any breakthroughs.

Active noise control, Cancelling noise with sound
With noises from industrial sites and our daily lives emerging as a social issue, active noise control technology that can solve this problem has come under the spotlight. Active noise control technology recognizes frequency of the noise and emits a sound wave identical in amplitude but with an inverted phase to cancel the noise. It is applied to various electronic equipment as well as cars and train seats. It is easy to install than the existing one that uses noise insulation materials and is more cost efficient. We will find out more about the technology.

In-depth: New beginning for Seoul-Beijing
대담: 한중 교류 정상화
To delve deeper into a promising new chapter in South Korea-China ties we have Professor Kim Tae-hyun from ChungAng University with us in the studio.
Professor welcome to our program.
Good to be here.
It seemed highly unlikely the situation could take a positive turn.
But here we are.
Certainly there were many key figures who paved the way to this point.
The APEC summit will mark the beginning of a fresh start for both sides.
What are the key subjects expected to be tackled during that meeting?
We did not expect the fallout from differing takes on THAAD to escalate to something this immense.
So it would be advisable to be prepared for another sudden turnaround.
In the worst case scenario, what preventive measures,...or means to cushion any major impact, should we have?
The biggest political event in China wrapped up.
And North Korea's lukewarm response was something noteworthy.
What can we takeaway from this unusual development?
Thank you so much for your time today
Professor Kim Tae-hyun.

Changdeokgung Palace represents modesty of Joseon-era royals
겸허한 도시속 궁전 유네스코 문화 유산 창덕궁
Seoul is one of the world's most modern metropolis with its state-of-the-art infrastructure and skyscrapers.
But sitting in the heart of the concrete jungle is Changdeokgung Palace, the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal of palaces of Korea's Joseon Dynasty.
Arguably the most beautiful of Seoul's main palaces... our Lee Unshin shows us to Changdeokgung Palace - Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
In storybooks, ancient palaces would usually be located by a seashore or in an endless green field.
But that's not the case with Changdeokgung Palace, a remarkable structure built centuries ago located in the middle of the now congested heart of Seoul and which was once the home of Korea's royal family.
Amid skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of urban Seoul, these historic grounds preserve the beauty of traditional Korean architecture, attracting a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad.
I experienced some tranquility in the very busy part of Seoul actually and I thought 'Wow that's interesting, let's stop by'...and I saw the UNESCO sign so it must be beautiful, that was the reason.
What I think is very beautiful is the very detailed paintings on the roof parts and the layout of the buildings in the nature itself.
Originally built as a secondary palace after the main Gyeongbokgung Palace, also located in Seoul,... Changdeokgung Palace gently blends into its natural surroundings, thanks to a minimal presence of artificial architectural features, thus preserving the landscape at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain.
That particular virtue is one of the main reasons UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site.
I live in Busan and this is actually my very first time at Changdeokgung Palace.
I have visited Gyeongbokgung Palace before, and I saw a lot of visitors walking around the castle wearing the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok .
It looked so graceful and fitting, so I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures while I'm here.
And she's not alone in choosing Hanbok. To wander around the courtyard of Injeongjeon hall, where centuries ago major state affairs such as the coronation of a new king were conducted,... you might think you've traveled back in time to the Joseon era.
The outfit really helps bring visitors closer to this remarkable place. And if nothing else, it makes a great photo opportunity.
Compared to other palaces from the era, Changdeokgung's design and layout are quite unique. Whereas most palaces were rigid and structured, Changdeokgung emphasized harmony with nature. But its most valuable treasure is hidden in the back.
This is the part that truly differentiates Changdeokgung palace from any other historic site in Korea; the secret garden. Used as a place of leisure by the royal family long ago and nowadays, this secluded peaceful space offers visitors a rendezvous with nature.
At the center of this expansive garden to the north of the palace....is a large pond, called Buyongji. And to the side is a pavilion once used as a library where the king and the government officials studied and discussed politics.
The pavilion has a gate named Eosumun , meaning “The ruler should always put his people first.
As the place where the King contemplated how to rule a nation, it couldn't have a better name.
Changdeokgung Palace is steeped in Korean history. It may be ancient, but the natural beauty conserved in each corner keeps it feeling new and brimming with live.
Representing the modesty of the Joseon-era royals, who respected their people and their surroundings,... Changdeokgung Palace may still have something timeless to teach us today.

BOK cuts key rates again, its causes and effects
Interviewee: KIM Sung-hyun, professor of economics, Sungkyunkwan University
Bank of Korea has cut its key interest rates to a record low 2.0%, the rate level the central bank had operated at the time of the global financial crisis in 2009. BOK has also lowered its forecast for this year′s growth rate to 3.5% from 3.8%. What does the rate cut and lower growth forecast mean? In particular, the latest rate cut is meaningful as BOK has moved to coordinate policy with the government. What ripple effects does the authorities want to induce from this? And with this effect, what changes will Korea′s economy go through in the second half of this year?

ECB's negative interest rate...How it affects Korea's economy
Interviewee: Professor KIM In-chul at Sung Kyun Kwan University/Honorary President of the Korean Economic Association
The European Central Bank decided to lower the short-term deposit rate to below zero for the first time by a major central bank. This means banks have to pay to deposit their money at the central bank. Experts see the latest measure will lead the money unleashed from Europe to flow into emerging countries. Notably, they expect about 4 trillion won to flow into Korea, positively affecting the country by slowing the rising pace of the won. How will the experiment of ECB that introduced negative interest rate affect Korea's economy?

BOK cuts key rate to 1.25% as gov't pushes with corporate restructuring
Korea's central bank took markets by surprise by cutting its main interest rate today... to a RECORD-LOW.
It now stands at one-and-a-quarter percent, down by a quarter of a percentage point... in a move to support the economy... faced with the government's corporate restructuring drive.
Hwang Ji-hye with more on the unexpected rate cut.
It was a bolt out of the blue that few were expecting.
The Bank of Korea on Thursday cut its key rate by a quarter-of-a-percentage point to an unprecedented low of 1-point-2-5 percent.
The unanimous decision came as the economy has seen its traditional growth engine, exports, fall sharply for almost a year-and-a-half.
We believe there are considerable downside risks in the second half of this year. The slowdown in global trade is greater than we had forecast in April and downward pressure could mount as the government's corporate restructuring gains momentum.
But the top central banker brushed aside speculation that the rate trim is aimed at facilitating the process of corporate restructuring, adding that it was a preemptive move to tackle the low growth trend.
And experts say it would have been now or never... for Korea's central bank to cut the rate... as the worse-than-expected U.S. jobs data in May tempered forecasts of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in June, in return giving leeway for the BOK.
Maneuvering the rate against the Fed's interest rate plans has prompted fears of massive capital outflows in emerging markets, and Korea is no exception.
It's a matter of when, but considering the Fed will likely raise its interest rates in the second half of the year, June may have been the appropriate month for Korea's monetary policymakers to go with a rate cut decision.
The governor emphasized though a rate cut itself will not put the economy back on track to a solid recovery and that fiscal policy as well as structural reforms should also follow.
Concern over further exacerbating household debt is another thorny issue that the central bank will have to confront.
Despite the potential negative effects of a lower rate, Governor Lee left the door open for additional rate cuts saying all options still remain on the table for possible scenarios ahead.

Korea's central bank cuts key rate to record-low 1.25%

Korea's central bank has slashed its key rate to a record-low of one-point-two-five percent.
It was a surprise cut,... ending almost one year of a wait-and-see approach of leaving the interest rate steady.
Hwang Ji-hye has the details.
It was a bolt out of the blue that few were expecting.
The Bank of Korea has decided to cut its key rate by a quarter-of-a-percentage point to an unprecedented low of one-point-two-five percent.
The surprise cut,... announced at the bank's monthly monetary policy meeting on Thursday,... is seen as an attempt to prop up the slumbering economy that has seen its traditional growth engine, exports, fall sharply for almost a year-and-a-half.
Due to plunging outbound shipments, output in the mining and manufacturing sectors also dropped for a second straight month in April.
On top of sluggish overseas demand,... the government's recent push to complete corporate restructuring in the country's ailing industries like shipping and shipbuilding has also fueled concerns that the drive could further weigh down the economy.
The majority of analysts had been betting on the central bank keeping the rate unchanged due to uncertainties abroad... like a possible rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Maneuvering the rate against the Fed's interest rate plans has prompted fears of massive capital outflows in emerging markets,... and Korea... is no exception.
The central bank's governor, Lee Ju-yeol, had previously questioned the effectiveness of a rate trim,... and it remains uncertain as to whether the lower rate will give a much needed boost to the economy.

Temple of Confucius: Episode Two
The sequel in a mini series of showing the public on construction methods of project 1845. In this episode I conduct a second hour on the temple by laying down outlines of buildings.
The Temple of Confucius at Beijing (北京孔庙/北京孔廟) is the second largest Confucian Temple in China, after the one in Confucius' hometown of Qufu.
The temple was built in 1302, and officials used it to pay their respects to Confucius until 1911. The compound was enlarged twice, during the Ming and Qing dynasties and now occupies some 20,000 square meters.

No more compromises on proposed wage peak system: Finance Minister
최경환, 임금피크제
Korea′s top economic official says there can be no more compromises on a proposed labor reform system that would gradually cut the wages of employees nearing retirement in order to boost the youth employment rate.
Speaking to reporters at the G-20 Finance Ministers meeting in Ankara, Turkey,… Korea′s Finance Minister said that the government has done enough to work out a compromise between labor and management,… and that it is time for the labor groups to make a decision.
Meanwhile, regarding the possibility of a U.S. rate hike,… Choi Kyung-hwan... said it is incorrect to assume that countries including Korea should increase their rates just because the Federal Reserve does.
Choi added that he had the impression that the U.S. would increase its rate slowly and carefully, after a conversation with Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer.

SUMMARY
=======
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK), is a country in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and lying to the east of the Asian mainland. The name Korea is derived from Goguryeo which was one of the great powers in East Asia during its time, ruling most of the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria, parts of the Russian Far East and Inner Mongolia, under Gwanggaeto the Great. South Korea lies in the north temperate zone and has a predominantly mountainous terrain. It comprises an estimated 51.4 million residents distributed over 100,363 km2 (38,750 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 10 million.
Archaeology indicates that the Korean Peninsula was inhabited by early humans starting from the Lower Paleolithic period (2.6 Ma–300 Ka). The history of Korea begins with the foundation of Gojoseon in 2333 BC by the legendary king Dangun, but no archaeological evidence and writing was found from this period. The Gija Joseon was purportedly founded in 11th century BCE, and its existence and role has been controversial in the modern era. The written historical record on Gojoseon (Old Joseon) was first mentioned in Chinese records in the early 7th century BCE.
Following the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea under Unified Silla in AD 668, Korea was subsequently ruled by the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) and the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). It was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided into Soviet and U.S. zones of occupations.
