ONLY in the Philippines! SUNKEN CEMETERY | Camiguin Island vlog 2018
Camiguin Island in the Philippines is beautiful. After making a travel vlog about the Giant Clams Sanctuary with my friend Aitz, I set my sights on the Sunken Cemetery. As a foreigner in the Philippines, this was amazing travel vlog material.
The sunken cemetery fell into the ocean with the 1871 eruption of Mount Vulcan. It was built by the spanish, and has seen a lot of destruction over the years. More eruptions, typhoons, and tsunamis have turned this beautiful graveyard into rubble, leaving only a few relics under water.
This Philippines travel vlog was recorded after leaving my expat friends Kulas of Becoming Filipino, Daniel Marsh, Finnsnow, Bret Maverick, and the fighterboys in Cagayan de Oro, CDO, and continuing for a mini adventure in Northern Mindanao

5-Hectare Underwater Cemetery in the Philippines 4K
Explore the 5-hectare underwater cemetery in the Philippines in 4K. It used to be a graveyard above the sea but it collapsed and sunk at sea when Mount Vulcan erupted in 1871.
The concrete large cross marks the sunken cemetery. It was built to replace the graveyard's original cross toppled by Typhoon Ruping in 1981, it was destroyed and its remnants are found underwater.
In 2004, the local government declared the site a marine-protected area. Once a site full of tombstones is now a haven for different marine species and corals.
The sunken cemetery is located at the shallow water off the beach of Barangay Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines.

Old Church Ruins and Sunken Cemetery, Camiguin | Philippines
Old Church Ruins is an old Spanish church. The traumatic volcanic eruption in 1871 wiped out the whole place.
What is left of the church are the mudbrick walls.
The church is located in Barangay Bonbon, Catarman.
Before there was a chapel inside the ruins but it was removed. They just put a small altat and you can light a candle there to pay a respect. Outside the ruins a beautiful scenery will greet you.
The church has a very nice view because it's beside the beach. The air is so refershing and the place is very peaceful maybe because it was lean season and we went there around 4:30 in the afternoon.
After the Old Church Ruins tour we went to one of the best tourist destination the Sunken Cemetery. In the video you can only see a huge cross. The actual cemetery is under the water.
The cemetery was also affected by the volcanic eruption. The place is located at Barrio Bonbon, Catarman also. The Sunken Cemetery is 20-30 meters away from the shoreline.
Visiting the plac is free but if you want to get closer to the cross the boat man can take you there for Php 20. Not bad for an amazing experience.
How to get there:
The old church ruins and Sunken Cemetery are in the same area and just beside the highway. You can ask the locals how to get there. And it is better to rent a motorbike if you are travelling alone or a couple but if you are travelling by group you can rent a multicab.

This is very unique to the Philippines! I don't think I have ever heard of there being an underwater SUNKEN CEMETERY anywhere else in the world!?
Back in 1871 a volcanic eruption made a town and cemetery sink into the ocean. Here on Camiguin Island in Mindanao, you can actually swim in it! THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE! My Canadian family was so happy to see all the life and beauty underwater here in this part of the Philippines!
Unique, beautiful, slightly scary... and tonnes of fun!

SUNKEN CEMETERY in the PHILIPPINES (didn’t expect THIS in CAMIGUIN)
20/4/19 - Camiguin, Philippines - this place is amazing! For our first full day on the island of Camiguin we headed out on our scooter to the Katibawasan Falls, an insanely beautiful waterfall, crashing down 70 metres. After this we moved to our new accommodation and then headed out to the Sunken Cemetery, which was nothing like what we expected with a beautiful coral reef, lots of fish, giant clams, and even a sea snake. We finished off the day getting some dinner with friends our new friends!

The Sunken Cemetery of Camiguin Island...Philippines
Source:
The Sunken Cemetery which is the remains of Mount Vulcan 1871 eruption lies 20 ft underwater in Barrio Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines. History has it that Mount Vulcan or locally known as the Old Volcano had 4 historic eruptions. One was in 1827 but records of this particular eruption were not important. Second was in 1862 which claimed 326 lives when thick ashes flowed and caught people who were fleeing towards the sea. The third one was in 1871 which caused the whole capital of Camiguin along with its cemetery sunk under the sea.
The years after the destructive eruption of Mount Vulcan, the Sunken Cemetery was visible during low tide. But Mount Vulcan erupted again in 1948 until 1953 sinking the whole area deeper. To mark the community cemetery, a large cross was built on the solidified lava in 1982.
Today, the Sunken Cemetery is one of those most visited tourist spots in Camiguin and is one of the most unique diving sites. One can see coral encrusted tombstones when snorkeling and diving in the area.
Sunken Cemetery is just 5 to 10 minutes away from Camiguin Walkway were one can also see the view of the cemetery on top of the old volcano. It's also 10 minutes away from the Old Spanish Church which was also destroyed by the 1871 eruption..
On the month of November, a fluvial procession usually organized by the townsfolk of Barangay Bonbon is held in honor of the sunken graves of their forefathers. They would bring flowers and candles as an offering.
The Sunken Cemetery is meters away from the shore but there are available boats that can take you to the site of the cross if you want a closer look. Alternatively, if you have your swimming gear you can swim through the clear waters up to the site of the cross for 5 minutes.
Visiting Sunken Cemetery is free. But the property owner is not liable for any loss, damage or any untoward incident that will happen while in the area. Just take extra precaution in everything that you do while enjoying your vacation.

TOURIST SPOT: SUNKEN CEMETERY - CAMIGUIN ISLAND, PHILIPPINES
We went there by boat on a high tide.
Sunken Cemetery Camiguin
The site of the sunken cemetery represents most of the first center of settlement in the island of Camiguin. The place was used to be called Tangub. Presently, it is already part of the municipality of Catarman. The Sunken Cemetery of Camiguin Island marks the swept remains of the island's rested locals. Driven underwater when Mt. Vulcan Daan erupted in 1870's, the large cross has served the town's people, as well as the tourists, a scenic spot to memorialize the departeds buried there.
