Sunset Beach is a beach located near Cape May Point, along the Delaware Bay, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is a local tourist attraction, in part due to its proximity to the SS Atlantus (locally known as the Concrete Ship) and the Cape May Light. It known for a flag raising-lowering ceremony which takes places every morning and evening from May through September. All the flags flown in the ceremony are flags from the caskets of veterans. The ceremony has been taking place on Sunset beach since 1973. The concrete ship, U.S.S. Atlantus viewed from Sunset Beach, Cape May Point, New Jersey.
Hello and thanks for checking out my video, on the concrete ship...yes, concrete!
Due to a shortage of steel, during World War I, the federal goverment turned to experimental design concrete ships. An emergency fleet of 38 concrete ships were planned by the United States Shipping Board. Only 12 of the concrete ships were ever put into service. Two others had construction begun, but they were never completed.
The Atlantus was the second prototype, a 3,000 ton 250 foot long freightliner. it was built with 5 inch thick hull of special concrete aggregate, to correct shattering and brittleness problems found in the first concrete ship. It was built by the Liberty Shipbuilding Corporation of Brunswick, Georgia. She was launched on November 21st. 1918, at Wilmington, North Carolina. Commissioned June 1st. 1919, the Atlantus served for a year as a goverment owned privately operated commercial coal steamer in New England.
With the end of the war, the more efficent steel ships were again available. The Concrete Fleet was decommissioned. The Atlantus was sent to the Bone Yard at Pigs Point, in Norfolk, Virginia in September of 1920. A year later the Atlantus was stripped after being purchased by a salvage company.
In 1926, the Atlantus was towed to Cape May, New Jersey. A Baltimore firm was attempting to start a ferry service from Cape May, New Jersey to Lewes, Deleware. It was planned to have a channel dredge well into shore. The Atlantus would then be forced into the channel. A special drawbridge type of device was to be mounted on the exposed end. two other hulls would be sunk at angles creating a Y shape. The ferry would dock by wedging in and cars and passengers would load and unload by use of the drawbridge.
While awaiting positioning the Atlantus broke loose of her moorings duning a storm June 8th. 1926 and went aground. Several attempts were made to free the Atlantus, but they were futile.

SUNSET BEACH - CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY
Hanging out at Sunset Beach in Cape May New Jersey. We get there after the sun sets. Then the next morning, we get there at 7 AM to find a beautiful foggy beach. So serene and peaceful. There are so many dolphins that leave Chesapeake Bay in the morning and then come back in at sunset. I was very excited to see dolphins! I haven't seen that many in my life. We spent the day laying on the beach and relaxing. We were about to leave after the sunset but noticed people were still staying. We asked around and it turns out, there were supposed to be fireworks for July 4th! What a nice surprise. Watching fireworks over the bay was amazing.

Last winter(Feb 2018), We visited Atlantic City and Cape May and this was my very first visit to Cape May. I was excited even though I know winter is not right time to visit Cape May.
17th Feb 2018 - We took NJTransit bus from Atlantic City and reached around 8.30 PM. It was raining and We ordered brick oven Pizza from local shop.
Next morning was started with beutiful sunrise from hotel's(Colton Court Motor Inn) balcony at beach avenue and I couldn't resist myself from
flying my drone out there. after having drone and photo session in the morning, We went to local restaurant for breakfast (Ocean View Family
Restaurant).
As it was an offseason - the price of hotels were down (1 beach view room with 2 Queen beds - $135 for 2 days)
As we didn't drive - we took Uber to explore the attractions near by and our next destination was Cape May Light House which has rich history.
The Cape May Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in the U.S. state of New Jersey at the tip of Cape May.It was built in 1859 under the supervision of U.S. Army engineer William F. Raynolds, was automated in 1946, and continues operation to this day. There are 199 steps to the top of the
Lighthouse. The view from the top extends to Cape May City and Wildwood to the north, Cape May Point to the south, and, on a clear day, Cape
Henlopen, Delaware, to the west. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 12, 1973.
After spending couple of hours we headed to sunset beach which is famous for best beach for Sunset in New Jersey.
Sunset Beach is a beach located near Cape May Point, in Lower Township along the Delaware Bay.
It is a tourist attraction, in part due to its proximity to the SS Atlantus (locally known as the Concrete Ship) and the Cape May Lighthouse.
Other attractions include Cape May diamonds, clear quartz crystals that can be easily found along the beach's length, and summer fireworks.
The S. S. Atlantus is probably the most famous concrete ship. She was the second concrete ship constructed in the World War I Emergency Fleet.
The war had ended a month earlier, but the Atlantus was used to transport American troops back home from Europe and also to transport coal in New England.
In 1926, the Atlantus was purchased by Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld to be used as ferry dock in Cape May.
In March 1926, the groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the construction of the ferry dock. On June 8th, a storm hit and the ship broke free of her moorings and ran aground 150 feet off the coast of Sunset Beach.
Since then the Atlantus has become a tourist attraction seen by millions.
Later in the afternoon - we went to Wildwood to see the boardwalk and experience the rides. Unfortunately shops, eateries, rides, water parks were
closed. We came back to our hotel in the evening and roam around Washington mall stores before heading for dinner.
The day full of activities were ended with collecting souvenir from local stores.

The Cape May Lighthouse, Cape May Point, New Jersey
Hello, another video of three on our little get away to Cape May. The Cape May Lighthouse is located in New Jersey at the tip of Cape May, in Lower Township's Cape May Point State Park. It was built in 1859, was automated in 1946, and continues operation to this day. It is the third fully documented lighthouse to be built at Cape May Point. The first was built in 1823, the second in 1847. The exact locations of the first two lighthouses are now underwater due to erosion. There are 199 steps to the top of the Lighthouse. The view from the top extends to Cape May City and Wildwood to the north, Cape May Point to the south, and, on a clear day, Cape Henlopen, Delaware, to the west. The tower is 157 feet 6 inches tall, from the ground to the tower's cast iron spiral staircase. There are 217 steps from the ground to the top, with 199 steps in the tower's cast iron spiral staircase. The lighthouse has two separate walls. The outside wall is cone-shaped, and is 3 feet 10 inches thick at the bottom, and 1 foot 6 inches thick at the top. The inside wall is cylinder with 8.5-inch thick walls which support the spiral staircase. The walls were designed to withstand winds several times above hurricane force. I hope you enjoyed the video, watch in HD if you can. Please add me to your friends list, and subscribe. Thanks, Enginenut :-)
Exploring Cape May Point State Park and Sunset Beach 5/14/13
Today, my dad and I went back down to Cape May to explore the area a bit more. Our first stop was Cape May Point State Park, located on the southernmost point in New Jersey. While we were there, we were able to see the Cape May Lighthouse, a World War II bunker, some ponds in the wetlands, and of course Delaware Bay. While looking out at the bay, we can make out a few structures in Delaware on the horizon, including a windmill. We can also see one of the Cape May-Lewes ferries.
Ater spending some time at the park, we returned to Sunset Beach. While there, we can see the remains of the concrete ship, the S.S. Atlantus, some boats off in the distance, and some very cool cloud formations.

Higbee Beach - Cape May, New Jersey on March 29, 2019. Clouds made Drone Loc (I named my Hubsan Zino drone) fly very erratic which lead to the slight crash landing in the middle of the video. Lousy day for flying, but I can't wait to get back there ASAP!

Cape May Diamonds at Sunset Beach
Cape May, New Jersey is famous for an unusual stone that washes up on its shores. No, they're not true diamonds, but Cape May's diamonds (smooth quartz stones) are a favorite among beachcombers.

Stranded Squid & Mermaid Tears - New Jersey Beachcombing Finds - Beach Combing Cape May NJ
This week me and Mrs Shell Casing Kid got out super early in the morning to take advantage of an early low tide at Cape May Point, New Jersey. We knew we would find beach glass, sea glass and shells beachcombing, but we never expected to find a stranded squid! We got it back in the water and hopefully it managed to recover. It was a flow tide coming in from dead low and it didn't wash up again, so maybe it's still out there swimming around somewhere! I hope so. Check out this short video of what we found and make sure to watch the end of the video where we show off all of our finds. We found a lot! If you like it, check out some of our other beach combing videos. You may even want to try watching a metal detecting video too! We try to post a new video every Wednesday at 2 PM eastern standard time. Thanks for watching and please like, comment and/or subscribe if you feel like it - and check out our channel again next week!
