A massive clean-up drive is under way in Calcutta as authorities try to revamp the city's tarnished image.
The clean-Calcutta mission is enjoying popular support.
But it has not been welcomed by the city's street vendors who - to their anger - have found themselves swept off the pavements.
Operation Sunshine - the drive to clean up Calcutta - is carried out under cover of darkness.
In sweeping midnight raids, municipal workers use bulldozers to tear down illegally constructed stalls - put up by the thousands of street vendors who normally crowd the city's streets and pavements.
Before the start of Operation Sunshine, at least 15-thousand stalls were filling the city's pavements.
In addition, more than 85-thousand temporary shacks had taken over parking spaces, causing severe congestion.
Not surprisingly, the street vendors have expressed anger at the city authorities' decision to clean up Calcutta.
To many vendors, their stalls not only provided their income, it was also their home.
Now they have nowhere else to go - Calcutta is bursting at its seams, with its population close to six (m) million.
A large influx of refugees from Bangladesh has put pressure on the already scarce civic resources.
While the city government has promised help in the rehabilitation of those evicted, nothing much has actually been done.
In many areas, the vendors have already appeared back on the streets because selling their wares is the only way they can survive and feed their families.
Their union is angry and says evicted stallholders must be given a proper place to sell their wares.

They have forced us to sit on the streets. We told them so many times that if they provide us with a proper place we will leave the footpath. We don't need to sit on the footpath. We need food and money so that we can support our families.

But the municipal authorities say the vendors were given ample warning.

We had given advertisements in the papers and met many people. And even when the operation was to be held, in the evening Calcutta police told everyone. So its not a military style operation. We have carried out the operation like a disciplined force.

The clean-up drive has also focused on what is seen as visual pollution - unsightly hoardings and buildings covered in tattered advertising posters.
Across Calcutta, hoardings are now being pulled down and the walls of public buildings are being scrubbed clean of all posters and graffiti.
And from now on, no hoardings or posters are allowed on any of the historic buildings.
Despite opposition from the street vendors, the clean-Calcutta crusaders have found support among residents.
Seeing their the streets being washed down and swept clean after decades of neglect, they have welcomed the city's revamped image.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
After 20 years, the people of Calcutta can take a stride along the footpaths, and pavements, without being jaggered by the hawkers and all. So I think it's great.

I find Calcutta very good nowadays you know. It feels very good. Its green nowadays and very peaceful.

The city's main roads look cleaner than they have done in years.
But there are many doubts about how long these standards will be kept up.
After all, Calcutta remains one of the most densely populated and polluted cities in the country.
But Operation Sunshine may be a first step towards Calcutta recovering its rightful place under the sun.
