Sunsphere All To Ourselves in Knoxville, Tennessee
We went up the Sunsphere during our recent visit to Knoxville, Tennessee. The Sunsphere was built for the 1982 World's Fair. It was fun to visit on this rainy day, especially since we had the entire place to ourself! We never saw another person outside the Sunsphere, riding up and down the elevator, or walking around the observation deck. It felt cool but kind of funny! There is no admission, and there was no one working there. Definited a relaxed attraction to vist!
Knoxville Sunsphere tower view inside
The Sunsphere, in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a 266 ft high hexagonal steel truss tower topped with a 75 ft gold-colored glass sphere that served as the symbol of the 1982 World's Fair. It is used now for office and restaurant space but the 4th floor is still open as a public viewing deck.
What does the Sunsphere represent to Knoxville?
A student film I created about Knoxville's icon. This is a low-resolution copy!

SMITTY TRAVELS to mast general store , the 1982 worlds fair sun sphere and the historic Tennessee theater Knoxville Tennessee in toy Store and More . lots of cool relics and sites..
The Knoxville store has been a retail landmark in Downtown Knoxville since 1898. The building was constructed after the Million Dollar Fire in 1897. The fire started in a nearby hotel and destroyed the entire block on our side of the street. The flames spread so fast and were so intense that the Chattanooga Fire Department was called in to assist. They put their pumper on a train that left for Knoxville approaching speeds of 90+ miles per hour.
When the building was rebuilt, it was home to the McNulty Grocery and Dry Goods Co.
In 1901 M. M. Newcomer's Department Store made the move from across the street into the building at 402 South Gay Street. It was one of Knoxville's bigger stores.
As an interesting aside to the history of the actual building, the Original Mast Store in Valle Crucis had a long relationship with Knoxville, which makes the store on Gay Street even more interesting. In perusing the invoices for goods purchased for the shelves from 1902 until 1920, numerous invoices had Knoxville addresses. One of the addresses is just down the street at what is now the Downtown Grill and Brewery. In the early 1900s, it was Woodruffs, a wholesale and retail house for all kinds of goods. There are also a number McClung Wholesale invoices. The McClung Warehouses are just a short drive from the store and are near the rail yard. Farm implements, barbed wire, and other items were stocked from this business.
In 1932, the Knox Dry Goods Store replaced M. M. Newcomers. Through the years it provided all kinds of goods and services including a beauty shop on the second floor. Knox Dry Goods modernized its name in 1954 becoming known as The Knox. It was a mainstay in the downtown area until 1977 when The Boston Store moved into the building.
In the late 1970s, many retailers had left downtown for the suburbs. The store was vacant until the White Grocery Store moved in in 1982 and operated until 1988. After that, the building was used for storage including sewing machines and all other items.
The Mast Store opened in August 2006.
1982 World's Fair
The 1982 World's Fair, formally known as the Knoxville International Energy Exposition, was held in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. The specialized Expo themed Energy Turns the World, was recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
It opened on May 1, 1982, and closed on October 31, 1982, after receiving over 11 million visitors. Participating nations included Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and West Germany.
The fair was constructed on a 70-acre (280,000 m2) site between downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee. The core of the site primarily consisted of a deteriorating Louisville and Nashville Railroad yard and depot. The railroad yard was demolished, with the exception of a single rail line, and the depot was renovated into a restaurant. The Sunsphere, a 266-foot (81 m) steel tower topped with a five-story gold globe, was built for the 1982 World's Fair. It still stands and remains a symbol for the city of Knoxville.
In 2007, the East Tennessee Historical Society opened an exhibit commemorating the 25th anniversary of the World's Fair.

Market Sqaure, Knoxville 4k
This is my first trip out with the gh4 (w/ olympus12-40). Took a couple shots of market square in the fall. These are just some test shots but I plan on doing some more in depth videos and possibly tutorials. Recorded in 4k and rendered on a 1080p timeline.

Knoxville, Tn - World's Fair Park
Sorry for the jello - I was running a very rough prop. The new ReplayXD firmware definitely brought the sharpness out. I'm happy - I just need to play with the settings to (specifically the AWB) to dial it in.
Winds were 18mph - 24mph gusts -
I was on my way somewhere else so I only had 30 mins to make 2 flights and get back on the road, and had zero time to do a site survey. Site survey included parking the car, grabbing my gear (binoculars) and tossing up. This was a no-planning single flight video. (the 2nd flight was from a diffferent location across the river which I'll edit up next).
This flight was flown from a single location on the ground - not from elevation.
