US Route 1 Road Trip, Part 7: Northern Virginia - Washington to Richmond
Part 7 begins in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. We visit the home to the US Congress at the Capitol Building (both fronts), the National Mall, and the Supreme Court.
We subsequently depart Washington, crossing the 14th Street Bridge over the Potomac River and entering Arlington, Virginia. As we travel en route to the state capital, Richmond, we witness the vast urban sprawl of northern Virginia gradually dissipate, giving way to rolling hills and small farms.
The musical selections from this section are:
USA National Anthem (Country Version), by Michael Nierada, from the album World Cups Party Emotion,
and Rustic Reel/ Off She Goes, by Deby Benton Grosjean & William Coulter, from the album Jefferson's Fiddle.

Washington DC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to DC
Things you NEED to know BEFORE you go to Washington DC. DC is often referred to as The District. You could easily spend a week in DC, especially if you want to see George Washington’s house in Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson’s house in Monticello. The City is laid out in a grid pattern with lettered streets running east-west, numbered streets running north-south. Diagonal streets — usually named after states — often intersect at circles (30 circles)
Dupont Circle is my favorite circle. Comprised of four quadrants (NE, NW, SE, and SW), which spread out from the U.S. Capitol.
Getting in
There are three Airports -- none of them actually in DC
Reagan (DCA) -- right next to DC -- connected by Metro or $20 Cab Ride
Washington Dulles (IAD)
Baltimore-Washington (BWI)
Amtrak to Union Station
Or Drive
Transportation in DC
Walk
One of the 10 of the most walkable cities in the USA
Travel + Leisure rated D.C. as the third rudest city in America,
Metro
Smart Trip Card
Capital Bike Share
175 stations across the city
Sign up for a day, or three
Taxis/Uber plentiful
Driving: Beware -- traffic is miserable and oneway streets abound
Parking is expensive -- Use parking panda
Museums
Smithsonians are free
Most on the national mall
Air and Space has 2 locations -- one by Dulles
Newseum and Spy Museum are expensive
My favorite is the Bureau of Engraving and Printing
No reservations required September 5, 2017 through March 2, 2018
Washington Monument elevator is really cool -- but it’s often broken
Best gift shops are in the museums
Government Stuff
Capitol Building or the White House, make sure to book your tickets in advance.
Capitol tour, reservations online or through your Congressional representative or senator.
Capitol Visitor Center provides a limited number of day-passes starting at 9 a.m.
White House, reserve a few months before your trip. Thru congressional representative.
Time to visit
Cherry Blossom Season
Not the summer when all the school kids are there
And the Summer is oppressively hot and humid, especially in August
And maybe not when the govt is in full swing
I like Winter -- no crowds at all
Hotels
Can be really expensive, as can parking
My favorites are the Park Hyatt and the Mayflower
Stay outside of DC in Arlington or Alexandria for cheaper hotels
Just a short metro ride in to the city
Food
The national mall and monument area has almost no food
Union Station and Le’fant plaza good for lunch, or around the white house
Avoid the Chinese food in Chinatown -- it’s all really awful
But George Bush’s favorite Chinese restaurant is just 20 minutes driving outside of DC
Peking Gourmet Inn in Fall Church -- Awesome Peking Duck
My Favorites: Potbelly
My Favorites: Moby Dick House of Kabob
My Favorites: Ben’s Chili Bowl
DC is more than just monuments and the National Mall
Get out and see the real DC
Georgetown
Penn Quarter
Adams Morgan
Smithsonian Zoo

Airplane Landing at Baltimore–Washington International Airport (BWI)
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (IATA: BWI, ICAO: KBWI, FAA LID: BWI) is an international airport in the eastern United States. It serves Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of three major airports serving the Baltimore–Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Located in an unincorporated area of Anne Arundel County,[5] the airport is 9 miles (14 km) south of downtown Baltimore and 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Washington D.C.[6][7] It is the busiest airport in Maryland, and the busiest airport in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area.[8] It is commonly referred to as BWI or BWI Marshall. The airport is named after Thurgood Marshall, a Baltimore native who was the first African American to serve as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. This airport also has a heavy population base from the Richmond, Harrisburg and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
BWI is a focus city for Southwest Airlines, and is the second-largest airport by number of departures for that airline after Chicago–Midway.[9] In 2014 Southwest accounted for 71% of the traffic at BWI.[10] BWI also serves as a hub for Southern Airways Express.[11] A record 25.1 million passengers traveled through BWI in 2016, an increase of 5.45% over the previous year.[12] BWI was ranked as the 23rd-busiest airport in North America and the 75th-busiest airport in the world in 2014 by the number of passengers.[13] BWI covers 3,160 acres (1,279 ha) of land
Patapsco River
The Patapsco River mainstem is a 39-mile-long (63 km)[1] river in central Maryland which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The river's tidal portion forms the harbor for the city of Baltimore.

NAVIGATION
-Apple Maps on our iPhones did a great job helping us navigate (bring a portable charger as heavy GPS will drain your battery considerably!). However, we found multiple instances where the app led us correctly as the crow flies but not necessarily in consideration of barriers or street crossing challenges. The Newseum was one example of this where we had to stop and ask for directions. The Five Guys closest to the Newseum is in an underground food court and Apple Maps did not alert us of the different elevation.
FOOD TIPS
-Food trucks surround the National Mall and there are multiple fast food restaurants just blocks from the main attractions and within walking distance. We recommend families pack lunches as purchased food expenses can add up quickly! Food is quite expensive in most of the museums.
***Attractions where food cannot be brought in (not even in your bag): Capitol Building
**Attractions where food must be sealed and closed: Smithsonian Museums (excluding the National Zoo, where there are no restrictions),
*Attractions where consuming outside food is prohibited but it is unclear whether it can remain stored in a bag: Newseum,
*Attractions where there are no restrictions on food: Smithsonian National Zoo (no alcohol and trash must be properly disposed of)

Washington DC and the National Mall
We had no intention of stopping in Washington D.C. at the start of our trip, but that was part of the fun of the adventure! We ended up spending two nights in Alexandria, VA and riding the Metro into Washington D.C. to be regular tourists at the National Mall. And, the kids got another Junior Ranger badge!
The National Mall is an open-area national park in downtown Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The National Park Service (NPS) administers the National Mall, which is part of its National Mall and Memorial Parks unit. The term National Mall commonly includes areas that are officially part of West Potomac Park and Constitution Gardens to the west, and often is taken to refer to the entire area between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol, with the Washington Monument providing a division slightly west of the center. The National Mall receives approximately 24 million visitors each year.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. On July 16, 1790, the Residence Act approved the creation of a capital district located along thePotomac River on the country's East Coast. As permitted by the U.S. Constitution, the District is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the United States Congress and is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the preexisting settlements ofGeorgetown and Alexandria; however, Congress returned the Virginia portion in 1846. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. Congress created a single municipal government for the whole District of Columbia after the American Civil War.
Washington, D.C., had an estimated population of 617,996 in 2011, the 25th most populous place in the United States. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to over one million during the workweek. TheWashington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of nearly 5.6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress,President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
A locally elected mayor and 13-member city council have governed the District since 1973; however, the Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. The District has a non-voting, at-large Congressional delegate, but no senators. The Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961, grants the District three electoral votes in presidential elections.

NASA Researcher Arrested on Plane Bound for China
A Chinese NASA researcher was arrested on Saturday night as he was about to leave the US.
The FBI intercepted Bo Jiang on a plane at the Dulles International Airport just outside Washington, DC.
Jiang was a contractor at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
The US Justice Department is accusing Jiang of lying to federal investigators about electronic devices he brought with him on his flight. US lawmaker Frank Wolf has separately accused Jiang of being a Chinese spy.
Jiang was found with flash drives, hard drives and computers that may contain codes for missile imaging and other technology the Chinese regime has long been interested in.
He appeared in federal court on Monday and will remain in custody at least until a detention hearing on Thursday.

Washington DC City Tour Guide .... a montage of photos and video clips
This video comprises photographs and short video clips covering my brief visit to Washington DC. I needed to give my body and feet a few days rest away from thru hiking the Appalachian Trail, Washington seemed to fit the bill.
It was perfect timing, my trip coincided with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving the American country. This is a time to allow people to honor American veterans and famous Americans. The Memorial Day weekend also marks the beginning of the busy summer season and the Washington, DC region celebrates with family friendly events and special services.
