STORYLINE
US actor John Travolta described the moments before his son's death in the Bahamas as he testified Wednesday against two people accused of trying to blackmail him with private information about the rescue effort.
With his actress wife Kelly Preston looking on inside the Nassau courtroom, Travolta said that he performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on his son after a nanny alerted him the teen had fallen ill at a family vacation home on Grand Bahama island.
The chronically ill Jett Travolta later died from a seizure.
Fifty-five-year-old Travolta is the star witness at the trial of two people - paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamas senator Pleasant
Bridgewater - who are accused of trying to extort 25 (m) million US dollars from the movie star.
Both defendants have pleaded innocent to extortion charges at the trial that began on Monday.
It was a rare public appearance for Travolta, who has kept a low profile since Jett's death.
He skipped promotional events this summer for his latest film, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.
He thanked his co-stars on his Web site for giving him time to grieve through their efforts to publicise the film.
Travolta arrived at the Supreme Court building in an entourage of sport utility vehicles for his first appearance at the trial. Security was noticeably heavier than previous days with Bahamas police officers surrounding the courthouse.
In his testimony, he said he and Preston were awakened by a nanny around 10:15 am on 2 January, the day of Jett's death.
Travolta said when he went downstairs, another caretaker was doing chest compressions and he began administering breathing help.
Police say the alleged scheme involved a document related to Jett's treatment. It would have released emergency responders from liability if the
family refused an ambulance but police said that did not happen.
A police officer testified on Tuesday that Travolta signed the release because he initially wanted his son taken to the airport instead of a local
hospital.
A nine-person jury was expected to hear from a total of 14 witnesses, including Travolta.

STORYLINE:
A Bahamian lawyer said on Friday that it will be for the courts to decide who has legal rights to the five-month-old baby of Anna Nicole Smith as the battle for custody of the child intensifies.
Sidney Collie said the child, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, had a legal right of residence in the Bahamas and also had rights as an American citizen to travel to the US.
That's not the issue, the issue is all of these individuals who are claiming to have legal rights to the child, Collie said.
Those claims need to be sorted out, under Bahamian law, in the Magistrates court and quite possibly the Supreme Court, but initially in the Magistrate court, under the Affiliation Proceedings Act or under some other emergency application, he added.
The infant was not with Smith on Thursday when she died in Florida.
But the exact whereabouts of the baby, who is at the centre of the broadening custody battle, remained unconfirmed on Saturday.
Smith's mother, Virginia Arthur, arrived on Friday in Nassau, where the late star's son died last year under mysterious circumstances, to check on the welfare of her granddaughter, a police official said.
A police spokesperson said Smith's mother believed her granddaughter was in Nassau.
He said Arthur was travelling in a limousine with a pack of international camera crews.
Arthur, who is reportedly staying in a resort hotel in Nassau's famed Cable Beach, could not be contacted for comment on Saturday.
The birth certificate for Dannielynn lists attorney Howard K. Stern as the girl's father, but her paternity has been challenged by two other men.
A former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, has filed a suit claiming he is the father and on Friday, Prince Frederick von Anhalt, the husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, announced that he had a decade-long affair with Smith and may be her infant daughter's father.
Experts say the decision on who receives custody could determine the child's inheritance.
Smith gave birth to Dannielynn on 7 September 2006. Three days later, her 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith, died while visiting her in the hospital.
He did not disclose further details.

TRAVOLTA TESTIFIES IN BAHAMAS
John Travolta is expected to testify again at an extortion trial on Wednesday, just a week after he described on the stand the circumstances of his son's tragic death on Grand Bahamas Island in early January.
A local lawyer for Travolta took the stand on Tuesday (29 Sept. 2009) and described the circumstances in which ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne, assisted by Grand Bahamas Senator Pleasant Bridgewater, allegedly approached representatives of Travolta to demand money for a release document signed by Travolta authorising the transfer of his son Jett to an airplane rather than the local hospital.
Allyson Maynard-Gibson took the stand on Tuesday and described the sequence of events leading up to the extortion demand.
Ms. Maynard-Gibson told the court Lightbourne, assisted by Bridgewater, approached representatives of Travolta offering to exchange the document for 25 (m) million US dollars, later reduced to 15 (m) million US dollars.
Bahamian police taped the demands in a sting operation, although the video has not yet been shown to the jury.
Murrio Ducille, a lawyer for defendant Bridgewater dismissed the taped evidence, saying it would have little effect on the case.
That's just a storm in a teacup, Ducille said on Tuesday after emerging from the courtroom.
But at least one celebrity news organisation has reported on its web site that its reporter has seen the incriminating video, leaving little doubt Lightbourne and Bridgewater were recorded demanding money in conversation with one of Travolta's US-based lawyers.
The document, which Travolta signed, would have cleared the ambulance driver of liability if the family refused to send 16-year-old Jett Travolta to the hospital.
The actor testified last week that he initially wanted his son flown to Florida for treatment after a seizure on January 2 that resulted in Jett's death.
But Jett was treated in the Bahamas, and it is unclear why the defendants allegedly believed Travolta would pay to keep the document private.
The trial began September 21 and is expected to last several weeks.

TRAVOLTA TESTIFIES AT BLACKMAIL TRIAL
Actor John Travolta told a jury on Wednesday (23 SEPT 2009) he had tried desperately to save the life of his seizure-prone son and made perhaps his first public description of the boy as autistic as he testified in the trial of two people accused of trying to blackmail him.
With his wife, Kelly Preston, looking on inside a courtroom in Nassau, in the Bahamas, Travolta said he performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on his son after a nanny alerted him the teen had fallen ill at a family vacation home on Grand Bahama island.
Jett Travolta later died from a seizure.
Travolta is the main witness at the trial of two people - paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamian Senator Pleasant Bridgewater - who are accused of trying to extort 25 (m) million US dollars from the movie star.
Both defendants pleaded innocent to extortion charges at the trial that began on Monday.
Travolta testified that he and Preston were awakened by a nanny around 10:15 am (1415GMT) on 2 January, the day of Jett's death.
Travolta said when he went downstairs, a caretaker was doing chest compressions and he began administering breathing help.
Travolta also said - apparently for the first time in public - that 16-year-old Jett was autistic, confirming speculation that had swirled for years.
The developmental disorder is frequently accompanied by seizures.
He was autistic. He suffered from a seizure disorder, Travolta told the jury when asked about his son's condition.
The actor said Jett suffered seizures every five to 10 days, adding that they would last 45 seconds to a minute and Jett typically slept for 12 hours after each one.
The judge dismissed Travolta on Wednesday afternoon but said he would be called back later for further testimony.
Travolta, 55, has kept a low profile since Jett's death.
He skipped promotional events this summer for his latest film, 'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3'.
He thanked his co-stars on his Web site for giving him time to grieve.
Travolta arrived at the Supreme Court building in an entourage of sport utility vehicles for his first appearance at the trial.
Security was noticeably heavier than previous days, with Bahamian police officers surrounding the courthouse.
Police say the alleged scheme involved a document related to Jett's treatment. It would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance, but police said the document did not come into play.
After waiting half-an-hour for the ambulance to arrive, Travolta testified, he signed the release because he initially wanted his son taken to the airport for a flight to Florida instead of a local hospital.
He did not address why Jett was ultimately taken to a hospital, but an employee of the resort community where the Travoltas have their Bahamas home, Nathan Moody, testified earlier that he looked into using two private planes to fly Jett out, but neither was an option on such short notice.
A nine-person jury was expected to hear from a total of 14 witnesses.

STORYLINE:
Anna Nicole Smith's mother and former boyfriend were in last-minute negotiations on Thursday to avert a showdown over custody for the late reality TV star's daughter, Dannielynn.
Lawyers for ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead, the baby's father, and Virgie Arthur met in private in the Bahamas to discuss a visitation arrangement, said Debra Rose, a lawyer for Smith's mother.
The outcome of the discussion was unknown.
Arthur spoke to reporters outside a court hearing regarding the inquest into the death of Smith's son, Daniel.
I have a daughter that has passed on and a grandson that has passed on, Arthur said. And, they shouldn't be passed on, she added.
Rose said Arthur, who was estranged from her celebrity daughter when she collapsed and died in February, will continue her legal bid for joint custody of the infant, Dannielynn, if the talks fail.
My client applied for custody as of day one, when her daughter died and there was no definitive person as the father, Rose said.
A Bahamian court was scheduled to hold a closed hearing on Friday on the matter.
Arthur and her lawyer spoke outside a hearing on a legal challenge to the method of picking the jury filed by Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern that halted the inquest into the 10 September death of Smith's 20-year-old son Daniel in the Bahamas from a drug overdose.
Supreme Court Justice John Lyons postponed the hearing until 22 May. The inquest itself will be delayed until the legal issue is resolved.
Lyons said he had concerns about Roger Gomez, the magistrate presiding over the inquest after watching a portion of an interview he gave on television.
He said he would consider whether Gomez should remain on the case before the next hearing.
Just like the judge says, we need to get the material and we need to look at it, said Wayne Munroe, who is representing Howard K. Stern at the inquest.
We do business in a particular way. It's the way we've been doing business for centuries, and it's held up so far, Munroe added.
