Sur City, Oman - A lovely place to visit.
Sur is a port city on Oman’s eastern tip. Its shipyards, which still produce traditional wooden vessels, played a pivotal role in Oman’s maritime past. In the city center, Sunaysilah Fort has 4 defensive towers around a courtyard. Exhibits at the Maritime Museum include ship models. Southeast of Sur, green turtles nest at Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve. To the west, craggy cliffs surround verdant Wadi Bani Khalid Valley.

Sur city visit
The city of Sur is one of the ancient Omani cities. Located along the coast South East of Muscat. Easy drive from Muscat - 200 km from Muscat via the coastal highway (2 hours)
It is a city that has played a prominent and distinguished role in maritime commercial activity across the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman, forming a business and cultural bridge between the Arabian Peninsula, India, South East Asia and Africa.
Sur Port is amongst the oldest ports, where more than one hundred and fifty sailing vessels docked daily during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
It is the most easterly city in Arabia and the first one to witness sunrise in this part of the world.
Sur used to be an important shipbuilding center of wooden vessels that crossed the oceans.

Ein Sachse im Oman Teil 10 – Sur Rundreise Oman
In unserer kleinen Jubiläumsfolge von „Ein Sachse im Oman“ genießen wir ausschließlich die fabelhafte maritime Atmosphäre der alten Seefahrerstadt Sur. Dort, von wo früher die Omanis schon regsam Handel mit Ostafrika, Indien und China betrieben, spürt man auch heute noch diese alten Seefahrertraditionen. Das liegt nicht zuletzt an den zahlreichen alten Holzschiffen, die sowohl im Hafen als auch in der Ebbe der Bucht vor Anker liegen. Ein besonderes Highlight hier in Sur ist die Dhau-Werft, in der diese Boote nach althergebrachter Art wieder gebaut werden. Eines der prachtvollen Exemplare ist die Fatah Al Khair, ein detailreich verziertes altes Schiff, welches nun als Freiluft-Museums-Stück in Sur zu besichtigen ist. Von dort fahren wir dann auf einen meiner Lieblingspunkte in ganz Oman: Den Aussichtspunkt an den Wachtürmen auf den Felsen von Al Ayjah. Nach einem kleinen Aufstieg per pedes ergeben sich malerische Ansichten über die Bucht, die Stadt Sur, den Nachbarort Al Ayjah und im Hintergrund die Ausläufer der Al Hajar Mountains. Schlusspunkt der heutigen Folge bildet dann der romantische Sonnenuntergang, der die Leuchttürme für kurze Zeit in leuchtende rote Farben verhüllt, bevor die Fischer mit ihren kleinen Booten hinaus aufs Meer fahren, um ihrer Arbeit nachzugehen. Natürlich immer in der den Omanis gegebenen Gemütlichkeit.

SUBSCRIBE: - Tour of a traditional private Qatari boat (a Dhow) in Doha, Qatar. Dhow is the generic name of a number of traditional sailing vessels with one or more masts with settee or sometimes lateen sails, used in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Historians are divided as to whether the dhow was invented by Arabs or Indians. Typically sporting long thin hulls, dhows are trading vessels primarily used to carry heavy items, such as fruit, fresh water, or other heavy merchandise, along the coasts of Eastern Arabia and Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Larger dhows have crews of approximately thirty, smaller ones typically around twelve.
Qatar is a peninsular Arab country whose terrain comprises arid desert and a long Persian (Arab) Gulf shoreline of beaches and dunes. Also on the coast is the capital, Doha, known for its futuristic skyscrapers and other ultramodern architecture inspired by ancient Islamic design, such as the limestone Museum of Islamic Art. The museum sits on the city’s Corniche waterfront promenade.
