Passengers told not to travel after rail works cause chaos | ITV News
Passengers on some of the busiest rail routes in the country were hit by cancellations because of over-running engineering works on Monday morning.
No South Western Railway trains were running between Surbiton and London Waterloo - the UK’s busiest railway station.
It is the latest disruption to hit SWR following a spate of problems involving signal and points failures.

Rare! 34067 Tangmere back at Mortlake after 4 years-Great Britain VI-20-Apr-2013
SR Battle of Britain Class No: 34067 Tangmere, in BR Brunswick Green livery, rapidly passes MTL in South-West London hauling the Down-RTC Steam Special to ESD. Tangmere was hauling the 1st leg of the 1st day (if you see what I mean) of an 8 Day Great Britain Rail Tour. The 1st leg was from VIC to WFD where Tangmere will take water.
It was a chilly, beautiful, sunny early-Spring morning and it was Saturday 20th April 2013 and Tangmere was 9 minutes late. Down trains were delayed as the Down Windsor Slow Line was shut between WNT and BNS. Tangmere was following the delayed 08:07 SW (2R11) Metro service from MTL to HOU (ex-07:45 from WAT). The 2R11 left MTL at 08:12 but I had to wait another 7 minutes for Tangmere to appear. As far as I can tell this is the 1st time Tangmere has passed MTL since late-2009.
Trivia time. This was the 20th Down main-line steam excursion of 2013 in the London area. By this stage last year (20-Apr-2012) there had been 19 Down specials. This is Tangmere's 5th Down London run of 2013. At this stage last year Tangmere had not appeared in London. This is the 5th Down RTC steam special from London of 2013. Two more than at this time in 2012. This was the 7th Down steam special of 2013 to run past MTL. At this stage last year there had been the same number.
MTL is a busy commuter station in South-West London. 4 Down trains per hour call at MTL on a Saturday, 2 heading for KNG and 2 for HOU. There are also 4 Up trains calling per hour, all heading for WAT. Between 07:40 and 08:40 today there were 6 Down Main Line trains passing MTL of which 4 were SW (2 for WNR and 2 for RDG, and 2 RTC, Tangmere and a Class 47 running light engine and following Tangmere. In the Up direction there were 4 main line trains pass MTL all SW and all heading to WAT.
The line and the station were opened by the London & Southampton Railway in July 1846. In 1850 the LSWR took over the London & Southampton system. In 1916 steam haulage started to give way to electric trains operating from a 3rd rail. In January 1923 the LSWR was absorbed by the SR who standardised on the 3rd rail electric system and by 1939 the only steam trains to pass MTL were freight or express trains diverted from the main-line. In January 1948 the SR was absorbed into BR. From 1955 BR started to replace all steam workings with diesel or electric traction and steam ceased through MTL in about 1965. In 1996 BR was privatised. Stagecoach won the SW franchise in the same year and have retained it ever since.
Hope you enjoy and please comment.
