Every year, the South West Atlantic Midwinter Swim takes place at Surf Bay, just outside Stanley in the Falkland Islands. In 2019, the sea temperature was a comparatively mild 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit).
Everyone who takes part (314 in 2019, the most ever) is entitled to a Certificate of Lunacy, signed by His Excellency the Governor!
The event, which attracts both local residents and visiting military personnel, raises money (£3000 in 2019) for two local charities (the Lighthouse Seafarers’ Mission and the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund) and the BFBS Big Salute.
Well done to everyone who took part and to those who made it happen.

SURFING FALKLANDS | Marina Werneck

A wind swept island off of Argintina, the Falklands Islands is a country of about three thousand people. Its main industry is sheep farming and it is home to a significant number of penguin colonies.
On this particular day in 2009, the wind speed was so strong that I was unable to tender ashore.
Reception Held to Mark the Final Phase of Demining in the Falkland Islands
Government House held a reception on Wednesday to celebrate the last phase of the demining programme in the Falkland Islands. The demining programme began in September 2009 and the deminers have been working on clearing the minefields across the East and the West Islands including iconic Falkland locations like Surf Bay.
Over the past ten years, their tireless work has meant that the Falklands will be clear of mines by the end of 2020. This will be the first time the Islands has been mine clear since before the conflict in 1982.

Beatha’s Beach, the Falkland Islands.
Beatha’s beach is one of the best wildlife sites in the Falkland Islands. The wide sandy beach is ideal habitat for Gentoo Penguins, South American terns and the endemic Falkland flightless steamer duck. Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins are frequently seen in the surf.
