New Moroccan paradise for surfers
(18 Jan 2020) LEAD IN:
An old fishing village in Morocco has become a popular destination for surfers.
Good weather and sea conditions have helped Taghazout attract beginners and experts to ride the waves.
STORY-LINE:
Surf's up in Taghazout.
While the winter weather in Europe has turned the seas there icy cold, the year-round Moroccan sunshine makes this seaside village a water sports paradise.
And as it's January, the beaches are not as crowded as they get during the summer months.
Taghazout has become the surf capital of Morocco.
In the past, surfing was practised only by tourists and only a few Moroccans were doing it, says Mehdi Lamhil, a Moroccan surfer.
With time, more and more tourists came to Taghazout to surf because this sport is very popular here. We also have more and more clubs and surfing associations helping local kids with equipment.
Surfers have been coming here since the 1960s - but back then it attracted wealthy foreigners who could afford the expensive equipment.
These days though, it's one of the cheapest surf destinations in the world, full of backpackers travelling on limited budgets as well as locals who have embraced the sport.
Every street of the bustling village boasts shops that sell or rent equipment.
The sport has become so important to Taghazout's economy that some locals have changed their businesses to cater to the demand.
This shop was the first cafe and restaurant in Taghazout. It was run by my grandfather, says surf shop manager Mohamed Lamrach.
Today, it is a shop fully devoted to surfing because Taghazout is well known for surfing.
It's not just the weather that draws surfers to this stretch of coast.
The conditions are suitable for every level.
There are sheltered spots were beginners can build their confidence in the water. But as winter descends, there are also areas where more advanced surfers can ride bigger waves.
Surf instructor Amine Amila sees Taghazout as the ideal location to build up surfing skills.
Thanks to the temperature we have here because we have the sun all year long, foreigners, mainly those from Scandinavian countries and northern Europe where it is cold, do come here to surf and to make the most of the waves, he says.
They are not frightening waves. Yes, we have some spots for professionals but we also have some others for beginners and intermediates. That allows them to improve and progress gradually.
European tourists are the typical clientele.
They are escaping the winter back home for a bit of North African warmth,
I am a beginner but I come to Morocco very often, says French tourist Ludovic Maillet.
You can come here all the time, from January to December. Good weather and waves are always guaranteed.
Taghazout is an old fishing village, 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) north of Agadir.

Morocco Bicycle Touring Surfari Episode 03
MOROCCO BICYCLE TOURING SURFARI EPISODE 03 is the latest adventure travel video from AgeHIGH. Combining my new found love for bicycle touring and life long obsession with surfing, I set off to explore exotic Morocco by bike.
I decide to look for a better spot to take advantage of improving surf conditions. Finally, my instincts are correct. After a day of cycling along the dramatic Moroccan Coastline, I arrive in the small fishing village of Imsouane to find an epic right-hand point break. I spend the next few days surfing the phenomenal wave.
Eventually, I move on and make my way to the capital of Moroccan surfing, Taghazout. Along the way, I befriend an old fisherman who is living in a self-made cave on the cliffs overlooking the scenic coast. He treats me to homemade bread, butter, and the most heartwarming hospitality you could ever imagine. Undoubtedly the highlight of my Morocco Bicycle Touring Surfari.
Once in Taghazout, I move into a comfortable, two-bedroom apartment, for $30 a night. It's in a perfect location to explore the town. It's also within walking distance to many of Morocco's best surfing breaks. Such as Killers, Anchor Point, Panorama, Mystery's, Hash Point, Boilers, Banna Point, and on an on. Surfing around Taghazout is out of this world.
Follow along as I set off solo traveling on my bicycle off the beaten path in search of scenic roads and perfect surfing waves.
As always, AgeHIGH bicycle touring videos are not only shot but also edited while on tour. It is my firm belief that this in the field style of production more accurately captures the bicycle touring experience.

Morocco - Agadir - TV Traveller
Agadir is a city in southwest Morocco. The city is located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Agadir is an important fishing and commercial port. It is also a famous seaside resort with a long sandy beach.
Algeria borders Morocco to the east and southeast though the border between the two countries has been closed since 1994. There are also four Spanish enclaves on the Mediterranean coast: Ceuta, Melilla, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, Peñón de Alhucemas, and the Chafarinas islands, as well as the disputed islet Perejil. Off the Atlantic coast the Canary Islands belong to Spain, whereas Madeira to the north is Portuguese. To the north, Morocco is bordered by and controls part of the Strait of Gibraltar, giving it power over the waterways in and out of the Mediterranean sea. The Rif mountains occupy the region bordering the Mediterranean from the north-west to the north-east. The Atlas Mountains run down the backbone of the country, from the south west to the north east. Most of the south east portion of the country is in the Sahara Desert and as such is generally sparsely populated and unproductive economically. Most of the population lives to the north of these mountains, while to the south is the desert. To the south, lies the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that was annexed by Morocco in 1975 (see Green March). Morocco claims that the Western Sahara is part of its territory and refers to that as its Southern Provinces.
