Surfing in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa - Ticket To Ride Surf Camp, Jan 2013
Here's a look at our first week in J-Bay. The group have been learning a lot from Etianne and everyone's surfing has improved a lot, with each member riding a point break wave. We have also painted a township school as one of our community projects, each of the group returned with very painted hands! A highlight of J-Bay so far has been Klee's birthday when we took a trip to the waterfalls where there is a zip wire ride into the water, this created much fun and a lot of laughs. Take a look for yourself, hope you enjoy the blog.

WATERFALLS & SURFING IN JEFFREYS BAY, SOUTH AFRICA
★GET YOUR FREE TRAVEL SECRETS ★
Jeffreys Bay is the ultimate place to go surfing in South Africa and I definitely wasn't going to miss it during my trip.
We had a couple of flat days with no surf at all so me and a group of friends ventured to a local waterfall to relax in the sun and utilise the flying fox that is there.
I met up with local surfing legend Etan to discuss surfing in South Africa and what its like living in J Bay.

ASP Jeffreys Bay Men surf
Jeffreys Bay, or J-Bay as it's known throughout the surfing community is listed as being among the five most famous surfing destinations in the world, and as always hosts the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour event. For almost 50 years South Africa's pride and joy has been attracting competitors and spectators from around the world to revel in the might of the world's finest right-hand pointbreak. Often a turning point in the season, the Billabong Pro has the real propensity to make or break a world title bid, and with over $340,000 in prize money up for grabs there is always a lot at stake. For some though 'Supertubes' is worth so much more than the cash on offer, for the surfing elite it's all about becoming 'good at J-Bay'. Here are the thrilling highlights of the contest for you!

Cassiem Collier, surfing J-Bay, 2019-09
Travel Bugz recently sponsored a trip to J-Bay with South African surfing icon, Cassiem Collier. Spurred on by fellow surfing icon, Derek Hynd, the mission was to capture a 90 minute session at Super Tubes as part of an entry into an underground surf tour that celebrates the art form of surfing, as opposed to the mainstream, performance-based model.
Needing a decent swell, Cass watched the charts and then hit the road just as the cold front was pushing up the coast from Cape Town, literally riding the storm up to J-Bay. The Caddy TDI handled the rough weather with ease, not to mention offering Cass a comfortable night's sleep so he could wake up at dawn to perfect Super Tubes barreling down the point.
After shredding a bunch of waves and capturing great footage, Cass now needed to surf a retro shape. Local legend Bruce Gold stepped up and lent him his very own retro fish, shaped by David Nuuhiwa, based on a Joel Tudor shape - talk about a convergence of legends!! This was a magical moment in South African surfing history! Cass paddled out on the soaring eagle for a session he described as magical.
As the light faded, Cass hit the road again for the long haul back to Cape Town, basking in the golden memories of all the tubes and feathering lips he'd danced with that day.
