Surkanda Devi Temple || Dhanaulti Snowfall || Place to visit in Uttarakhand
One of the most persistent mythologies concerning the origin of worship at the site is associated with the legend of Sati, who was the wife of the ascetic god Shiva and daughter of the Puranic god-king Daksha. Daksha was unhappy with his daughter's choice of husband, and when he performed a grand Vedic sacrifice for all the deities, he did not invite Shiva or Sati. In a rage, Sati threw herself onto the fire, knowing that this would make the sacrifice impure. because she was the all-powerful mother goddess, Sati left her body in that moment to be reborn as the goddess Parvati. Meanwhile, Shiva was stricken with grief and rage at the loss of his wife. He put Sati's body over by his shoulder and began his tandava (dance of cosmic destruction) throughout the heavens, and vowed not to stop until the body was completely rotted away. The other Gods, afraid of their annihilation, implored Vishnu to pacify Shiva. Thus, wherever Shiva wandered while dancing, Vishnu followed. He sent his discus Sudarshana to destroy the corpse of Sati. Pieces of her body fell until Shiva was left without a body to carry. Seeing this, Shiva sat down to do Mahatapasya (great penance). Despite the similarity in name, scholars do not generally believe that this legend gave rise to the practice of sati, or widow burning. According to various myths and traditions, there are 51 pieces of Sati's body scattered across the Indian subcontinent. These places are called shakti peethas and are dedicated to various powerful goddesses. When Shiva was passing over this place on his way back to Kailash carrying Sati's body, her head fell at the spot where the modern temple of Surkhanda Devi stands and due to which the temple's got its name as sirkhanda which in the passage of time is now called surkanda.

Surkanda mata temple at Kaddukhal, Dhanaulti is at an altitude of 9000 feet. The base is at 7000 feet so a net height of 2000 feet. It has 2 KM long steep track. I did it at 65 so anybody can do it. Once up, the temple is of Pagoda style. The view of snow-capped Himalayas is breathtaking, to say the least. Be careful about monkeys snatching your prasadan bags. The spot is most easily reached from the southwest via Dehradun, but is a typical day-trip for visitors to Mussoorie and Landour. It is located on a hill and one reaches there after a steep 2 km trek, from village Kaddukhal, on the Dhanaulti - Chamba road.[2] About 33.9 km, 57 mins. from The Mall Rd Mussoorie and 113 km, 2 hours 10 mins far from Devaprayag, Uttarakhand, India

According to mythological stories
Sati was the daughter of Raja Daksha. Lord Shiva and Mata Sati both had a love marriage. Daksha Prajapati made a Bhavey Yagya. Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and other gods and goddesses were invited in Yagya but deliberately did not call Lord Shankar. Raja Daksha didn't invite her Daughter and Lord Shiva. At the altar of sacrifice, Sati asked his father Daksha the reason for not inviting Shankarji and protested against his father. On this, Daksha Prajapati insulted Lord Shankar. Sati, who was suffering from this insult, dedicated his body to fire in his own pace. When Lord Shankar appeared in anger, he separated the head of King Daksha. Lord Shankar started raising the burning body of Sati and started to rotate around the earth in all direction. To save the entire world from the perpetrator, Lord Vishnu, the god of the world, split the body of Sati from the Sudarshan Chakra with the circle. Wherever the body of Sati's body fell on the earth, that place in called Shaktipeeth.
In Surkanda Devi, a portion of the head of Mother Sati was dropped, hence it's known as Surkunda or Sirkunda.
Surkanda Devi is 5km from Dhanaulti, 33km from Mussoorie, 48km from Tehri Dam and 68km from Dehradun. The height of this place is 2750m from sea level.
If you have time, you must come to visit the temple with your family. Mother Surkanda will fulfil your every wish. Jai Surkanda Mata

Dhanaulti Trip | Surkanda Devi Temple | Eco Park | Best hill station for vacation | A Hidden Gem
We went to Dhanaulti for a short trip, this place is situated in Uttarakhand near Garhwal. This is one of a lesser-known hill station which has beautiful mountains and varied flora and fauna which would make anyone go wow!
The atmosphere in Dhanaulti is very refreshing and is chilling even in the burning months of June and July.
The famous tourist attraction in Dhanaulti is Surkanda Devi temple and Eco Park.
Away from the hussle bussle of city life, if you are looking forward to a place which can offer you peace and natural beauty this is the most recommended place to be in.
We went to Dhanaulti in July, the weather was very cold the temperature went up to 10 degrees in the night. We enjoyed bonfire, dancing, trekking, singing, we went to the Eco-park and Surkanda Devi temple as well.
