Sur Sagar lake also known as the Chand Talao is a lake situated in middle of the city of Vadodara in the State of Gujarat in India. The lake was rebuilt with stone masonry in the 18th Century. The water in this lake remains in it for the whole year.

120-foot tall statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of Sursagar Lake, Vadodara
Sursagar Lake, earlier known as Chandan Talav, was rebuilt in the 18th century with stone banks and masonry. It is now used for boating and is a splendid sight especially on moonlit nights. This lake remains full of water throughout the year. In 2002, the Vadodara Mahanagar Seva Sadan (VMSS) installed a 120-foot tall statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. Several underground gates have been constructed to empty the lake before it overflows; the excess water is channelled into the Vishwamitri river which flows through the city. The lake is also used for the immersion of idols after religious festivals. The city’s famous Music College (India’s first such college) overlooks the lake, and it takes just a minute to walk across to the Nyaya Mandir. Once upon a time, there was a pond – called Chandan Talav – outside the walled city of Baroda. Around 1757 AD, Sureshwar Desai (a tax collector in the Mughal era who earlier went by the name of Sureshwar Pandya) renovated and excavated the pond and built earthen ‘ghats’ with embankments. The pond was then named after him, and thus called Sursagar. Later, Malharrao Gaekwad made ‘pucca’ embankments. In the 1990s, remains of an ancient temple were found from its bed.

Built in 1936 as a royal mausoleum of the Gaekwad dynasty, Kirti Mandir now stands as a glorious monument of Vadodara. The grand building, situated in the heart of the city, was set up in the honor of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III's silver jubilee celebration. This E-shaped building features beautiful elements like balconies, terraces, tombs, domes and a brilliantly carved 35 meters high central shikhara. Although it looks simple from the outside, but the temple interiors showcases impressive pictures, murals by Nandalal Bose, based on themes like Gangavataran, Life of Meera, the battle of Mahabharat and Natir Poojan and some rare paintings from the famous artist Raja Ravi Varma. No doubt, Gaekwad's were the heir to a tradition of oriental refinement, a great patron of the arts, literature, philosophy and science, all these are best depicted through the exteriors and interiors of Kirti Mandir.
