Víðgelmir Lava Cave in Iceland (Vidgelmir)
Víðgelmir (Vidgelmir or Vithgelmir) Lava Cave in Iceland. One of the largest lava caves in the world!
We explored this Víðgelmir (Vidgelmir or Vithgelmir) lava cave through a tour by Into The Glacier. From the Into The Glacier website: This Vidgelmir lava field was formed during a destructive eruption in the 10th century that originated under Langjökull. The Vidgelmir cave is mentioned in a written source dating back to 1398, and evidence of human presence dating back to the Viking Age (983-986) were discovered in 1993. The Vidgelmir Lava Cave tour is extremely family friendly, thanks to our all new signature walkway and feature lighting.
Dangerous Lava Cave... - Iceland
The second day of my trip around Iceland, found me in Husafell. I stayed at the house of my very good friend Ratko, from Croatia. During the day, I had the time to hike and enjoy the beautiful nature, at the area of Husafell. I also found a trampoline!
When Ratko came back from work, we visited the biggest lava cave in Iceland. It is called Surtshellir and it is massive! We had a hard time inside it though, as it is pitch black, wet there is no solid ground and a rock might fall at any moment. Definitely not suggested for claustrophobic people and it is definitely not safe. Proceed with your own risk.
After the cave though, we had our reward , which was a hot tub at the back yard of the house!
Thanks for watching!

20. Surtshellir, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss
Iceland Roadmovie part 20: includes Surtshellir is a lava cave located in western Iceland. Approximately a mile in length, it is the longest such cave in the country. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 meters out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. Upstream from Hraunfossar is Barnafoss (waterfall of the children)
