A taste of the high life at a roadside restaurant
(6 May 2018) LEADIN:
You can forget about turbulence ruining your dinner on board this aircraft.
Parked off North India's busy National Highway 44, is an old Airbus A320 that is turning heads and giving people a taste of the high life.
STORYLINE:
Once an Air India flight that ferried passengers across Indian skies, this airplane was trucked more than 170 miles from a junkyard near New Delhi's airport and converted into a roadside diner near the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana.
Visitors, mostly commuters on the busy highway, have to purchase a $4 boarding pass, and go through a light security check to get on board.
Though economic growth and lower airfares have meant more Indians are now travelling by air, many have never been inside an aircraft.
According to the Indian aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), 117 million passengers travelled on domestic airlines in 2017.
That is only about 9 percent of the total population.
Inside the airplane, cramped economy seats have been replaced by plush benches and tables, and uniformly dressed staff serve the passengers with airplane-themed crockery.
The restaurant also claims to be the first in the world to offer people a chance to dine on the wing of the aircraft, with a personal butler in tow.
That experience costs around $75 for two.
Though there is stiff competition from roadside eateries called 'Dhabas' that are littered on either side of most north Indian highways, Runway 1 gets more than 500 visitors every day.
And that figure doubles during the weekends when more people are travelling.
The airplane diner is the brain-child of 30-year-old businessman, Kshitiz Kakkar, who earned his MBA at a college in the United Kingdom and now lives with his family near the restaurant.
Kakkar says the idea of an airplane diner came to him after he saw this aircraft parked outside a New Delhi airport for several months.
He wanted to buy it before anyone else did and give people from the nearby villages the experience of travelling by air.
With all, passport, check-in, everything, security check, they are getting the feel. And the kids are really excited. They don't go anywhere else, he says.
Sapna Deswal, who lives nearby, says her son absolutely refused to go anywhere else for lunch.
They had never seen an airplane up close.
When we were driving from Ambala, my son started crying and said 'Mummy, I only want to go on the airplane. So we thought we'd check it out, she says.
Aruna Mehta is dining with her husband and their daughter.
When we heard an airplane has been set up here, and is very nice, and that people were coming from far away to see it, we immediately made a plan to come see this someday. That day is finally here and we are feeling really good , she said. It feels like you're actually on a plane.
For an additional $5, passengers on board the airplane restaurant can step into the pilot's shoes and virtually take-off.
The cockpit has been transformed into a Virtual Reality flight simulator but some parts of the old cockpit have been left untouched.
The staff has been specially trained by Kakkar's wife, who previously worked as cabin crew in the aviation industry, and apart from dressing slightly formally, they serve customers like they would on an airplane.
The cost of the boarding pass can also be redeemed against the food bill.
Whoever comes here believes they have come to an aircraft, says Rohit Kumar, who works as a server.
