How did convicts make bricks? - building the colony of Sydney
May, 1818
Convict Joseph Smythe is a master brick maker working for the government and he has a tough job ahead of him.
Governor Macquarie has an ambitious building project for Sydney and thousands of bricks are needed.
Joseph has to teach two newly arrived convicts how to make clay bricks as part of a brick gang.
Listen carefully – do you think they’ll be able to understand his instructions?

Using James Hardy Vaux’s list of convict slang, published in 1819 as A new and comprehensive vocabulary of the flash language, we took some creative licence and crafted some convict conversations. See how you go understanding what they say and visit slm.is/convictdaylife to learn more.

Eat Your History: A Shared Table
What we eat and how we choose, prepare and consume our food reveals a lot about us. From ornate Vaucluse House to working-class Susannah Place, iconic Rose Seidler House to homely Meroogal, the houses of Sydney Living Museums have been home to generations of people from all walks of life. Eat your history: a shared table invites you to meet the people who lived in these places, and welcomes you into their kitchens, gardens and dining rooms, to see how they cooked their food, set their tables and entertained family and friends.
This exhibition celebrates our shared culinary past, from the early days of the colony through to the modern in the 1950s. From days of scarcity to abundance, the simple to the grandiose, the toil of servants 'below stairs' to the theatre of a lavish Victorian banquet, we explore lost and forgotten practices, ingredients and techniques, manners and etiquette, tastes and trends.

Growing up in the early 1900s - Morning Rituals
What was life like for ordinary working-class children living in the suburbs or on the fringes of Australian cities in the early 1900s? How different or similar was their day to yours?
Step into the shoes of the Youngein children, Jim and Dolly, from Susannah Place, Sydney and find out how they lived.
Do you have a bathroom in your home? Some of you may have more than one! We take it for granted that homes all have bathrooms, but this wasn’t always the case. In fact, indoor plumbing was still a modern convenience in the early 1900s.
Imagine if you didn’t have a bathroom in your house. Where would you go to the toilet? How and where would you wash yourself? Do you think you would wash as frequently as you do now?
Find out what the Youngeins did before their washhouse was built.

Step into the shoes of the Youngein children, Jim and Dolly, from Susannah Place, Sydney and find out how they lived.
When you wake up in the morning, do you sometimes lie in bed listening to the various sounds around your home and on the streets? What are some of the noises you hear early in the morning where you live?
Compare the sounds you hear in the mornings with the sounds the Youngeins would have heard in the early 1900s. See if you can find some similarities and differences.
