Punalur suspension bridge crossing the river is the only suspended-deck type in south India. Built in 1877 by Albert Henry
across the Kallada River, this huge bridge was suspended by two spans and was used for vehicular movement. Construction took more than six years. It is said that after completion of the bridge people hesitated to walk through the bridge. In order to prove the strength of the bridge the engineer and his family passed under the bridge in a country boat while six elephants were walking through the bridge. Now the bridge is only of historical interest.[6][7]

The main concept behind the construction of this bridge was that areas on the other side of the river Kallada was dense forests. The need of a bridge was necessary, but the problem was through a concrete bridge, wild animals can easily pass to the populated area so to prevent that a bridge which shakes when some one enters was built and finally it succeeded.
The bridge is connected to four wells. The iron rods of the bridge is connected to the clips, situated in the wells. Each well is of about 100 feet deep and no one since know the engineering behind the construction of this bridge

Thenmala (Malayalam: തെന്മല ) is a tourist place near Punalur town, Kollam district in Kerala. Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. The Thenmala dam was built across Kallada River. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies...
Thenmala attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a host of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain. Thenmala is approachable both from Trivandrum and Punalur by road. The waterfall called Palaruvi is a prime attraction nearby. Also nearby is a deer rehabilitation center where visitors can see deer in a forest setting and have a peep into a traditional tree house used by forest dwellers to escape harm from wild animals. Other places near Thenmala are Kulathupuzha, Anchal, Punalur, Kamukumchery and Shenkottah in Tirunelveli district(Tamil Nadu). Themala is 72 km from Thiruvanathapuram and 16 km from Palaruvi Falls.

This ancient hanging bridge of Kerala is built of linked bar chains which are bolted with huge nuts and steel rod hangers which joins the chains with the deck. Two pillars supports the chains which inturn supports the deck. The chains runs through the top part of the pillars and the deck is laid through the pillars and supported at both ends of the bridge . The bridge is said to be a non-cement construction.
Inside one of the Four wells on both sides of the hanging bridge. The two ends of the twin steel bar chains which supports the bridge are anchored into these wells. The chains are made to pass through the pillar tops, basements on bridge entrances and finally fixed deep inside these wells. It would be possible that the wells are interconnected for weight distribution but this is not a surety though.

Punalur is a city situated near the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the Kollam district, in the southern State of Kerala, India.
It is situated on the banks of the Kallada River, receiving its name from two Tamil words; punal, meaning “water” and ooru, meaning “town”, therefore “town of water”. It is about 45 km north-east of Kollam and 75 km north of Thiruvananthapuram.
Punalur is the headquarters of Pathanapuram Taluk, the gateway to the Western Ghats. It is also known as the “Lap of the western ghats”.

പുനലൂർ തൂക്കു പാലം....ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ രണ്ടു കരകളെ തമ്മിൽ കൂട്ടിമുട്ടിക്കുന്ന ചരിത്ര നിർമ്മിതി.
എൻജിനീയറിങ് വിസ്മയമായി ഇന്നും ഉയർത്തിക്കാണിക്കുന്ന, ആറ് ആനകളെ ഒരുമിച്ച് പാലത്തിന്റെ മുകളിലൂടെ നടത്തി ശക്തി തെളിയിച്ച പുനലൂർ തൂക്കു പാലം
1871 ലായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരനായിരുന്ന ആൽബെർട് ഹെൻട്രിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് പാലം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്.
400 അടി നീളവും ആർച്ചുകൾക്കിടയിൽ 200 അടിയും ആർച്ചുകൾക്ക് ഇരുവശവും 100 അടി വീതിയുമാണ് ഉള്ളത്. അക്കാലത്ത് മൂന്ന് ലക്ഷം രൂപയായിരുന്നു ഇതിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണ ചെലവ്. 1877 ൽ പണി പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയെങ്കിലും പിന്നെയും മൂന്ന് വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷമാണ് പാലം പൊതുജനങ്ങൾക്ക് തുറന്നു കൊടുക്കുന്നത്.
ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ ചട്ടക്കൂടായിരുന്നു പാലത്തിന്റെ പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അതിന്റെ മുകളലി് തേക്കിന്റെ തടികൾ കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു പാളങ്ങൾ നിർമ്മിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ മുകളിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു പാലം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സമയം വരെ വാഹന ഗതാഗതം നടന്നിരുന്നത്
വാഹന ഗതാഗതം മാത്രമായിരുന്നില്ല പുനലൂർ പാലത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശം. അക്കാലത്ത് കാട്ടുപ്രദേശമായിരുന്ന ഇവിടെ വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുടെ ശല്യം വളരെയധികമായിരുന്നു. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുടെ ശല്യം കുറയ്ക്കുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യവും തൂക്കുപാല നിർമ്മാണത്തിനു പിന്നിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആരെങ്കിലും പാലത്തിലേക്ക് കയറുമ്പോൾ ഇതിന്റെ ചങ്ങലകൾ മുറുകി പാലത്തിന് ഒരു ചെറിയ കുലുക്കം സംഭവിക്കും. ഇങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കുമ്പോള് മൃഗങ്ങൾ പേടിക്കുമെന്നും അങ്ങനെ അവയെ തുരത്തുവാനുമായിരുന്നു ഇത് നിർമ്മിച്ചത് എന്നും പറയുന്നു.
1970 വരെ പാലത്തിൽ വാഹന ഗതാഗതം നടന്നിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് 1990 ൽ പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പ് പാലത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണം ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. ഇത് പിന്നീട് സംരക്ഷിത സ്മാരകമായി മാറുകയായിരുന്നു.
2016 ഓടുകൂടി പാലം നവീകരണം നടത്തി ആളുകൾക്കു തുറന്നു കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. തൂക്കു പാലത്തിലൂടെ കല്ലടയാർ മുറിച്ചു കടക്കുവാനായി നിരവധി സഞ്ചാരികളാണ് ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നത്.
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലാണ് പുനലൂർ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊല്ലത്തു നിന്നും 45 കിലോമീറ്ററും പത്തനംതിട്ടയിൽ നിന്നും 50 കിലോമീറ്ററും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തു നിന്നും 65 കിലോമീറ്ററും ഇവിടേക്കുണ്ട്. കൊല്ലം-ചെങ്കോട്ട റെയിൽപാതയിലെ പുനലൂരാണ് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്തുള്ള റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷൻ.
